It's like SMT1 and 2 where you input the commands before the turn, then watch the turn play out. SJ's substitute for Press Turns is Demon Co-op. If you hit a weakness, Demons of the same alignment will add extra damage to your hit.

An improved version of this was used in Tokyo Mirage Sessions, but that's Conditional Turn Based, which this system worked better for. Honestly they should have used a modified version of the Extra Turn System from Devil Survivor if they wanted to use this "input your moves before the turn starts" system.

We're talking about turn-based RPGs. Preparation is 90% of a battle. Liz requires by far more preparation than any fight in SMT4/SMT4A. I say this as someone who's beaten every boss including Stephen and Twisted Tokyo 9 Fiends on Apocalypse mode. None of them require the same level of preparation that Demifiend, Satan, and Liz require and none of them require you to keep a calculator on hand to keep track of their exact health throughout the battle. I'm only talking about the bosses on their hardest difficulties obviously. Maybe Liz is nothing on easy/beginner mode but on hard she's easily top 3

Both are pretty simple most of the time in PvE, and two sides of the same coin, abstract and concrete. It is ridiculous though how people shit on turn-based combat when action-based systems are 99% of the time just dodge/attack fests.

Turn-based has more complexity because of the amount of variables you have to take into account (status and resources), but action-based requires more actual skill in the form of timing, reaction speed, technique and so on. In most games you will find real challenge appropriate for testing either of them perhaps 1-3 times in the entire experience.

There's a strict difference between a that and waifu pandering though. One is just a female character that goes around acting like a normal character, whether they end up with you or not... and the other is someone like Toki, who makes it a point to constantly call you master and fight over you with Asahi. Compare IV's monkey to someone like Asahi or Toki and it's really obvious. Ape may like Flynn and even show some signs of it throughout the game, but that isn't her entire character. Asahi and Toki on the other hand make it a point to beat you across the head that they love you and do nothing but the worst waifu cliches to get that point across. There hasn't been any info on what this actually is. It could be the original strange journey with a new story route added to it, or an alternate take to it's story with these new characters. We'll have to wait until more info is released.
