A lot of the concept art in Color Splash just baffles me. It's clear that they are more than capable to create original or interesting designs that deviate from the signature designs, but they just refuse to. Why?

CS was trying to be to SS what TTYD was to PM64. You'll notice that CS does have a lot of original designs, they just don't stand out as much from each other as those in PM64 and TTYD did. I think it's unfortunate, but still much better than what we got in SS.

If CS had:

>more eccentric NPC designs
>chapter title cards and intermissions
it would have been a solid PM3.

Also, I like the final design for the black paint better. The cape design is kind of shitty, while the black paint is more interesting due to lack of clarity regarding how sentient it is, and also making it difficult to tell whether Bowser is possessed or simply crazy (while the cape is pretty obviously distinct from Bowser). It gave a somewhat interesting development, culminating in the revelation during the final battle that Bowser really is possessed by something (and in fact has no idea what's been going on).

It's not like CS is defined solely by its battle gameplay and its character designs. The world design was great (although I'm growing tired of the "get to the goal" type of world since SPM), the soundtrack and writing were great, I also liked the stories and graphics. The things brought back from the first games (key items, linear progression, Bowser's sprite from TTYD, the mail system that's a mix of PM64's and TTYD's, talking to "enemy" NPCs...) were a nice thing too.

It's weird cause I really like the exploration in this game, even moreso than TTYD since it was too linear for my tastes there, but the combat system really bogs down the system that would've been easily alleviated if they simply reused TTYD and PM64's battle system.
