Is this the best Metroidvania?
>>377980401
I'm thinking about getting this. Is it worth it?
No
>>377980891
Art style seems silly
Haven't finished it yet, but 23ish hours in it's a 9/10 for me and I've played almost every major Metroidvania release. Fantastic art, music, and atmosphere. The combat isn't anything special compared to something like Valdis Story, but it's still completely serviceable and fun.
>>377980663
I find it highly addictive. It's really satisfying to get a good run, upgrade a bunch of items, and unlock new weapons and abilities. Makes the following runs feel so worth it.
I absolutely love how you can choose to take your time and find everything a zone has to offer, or speed through and get gold and gear from timed doors.
>>377980891
weeb trash cant be metroidvania
in fact, japan cant make metroidvanias
>>377980663
I'd wait until it's out of early access. It's very clear the game is unfinished. However, what's there is great. I wouldn't agree that it's better than Hollow Knight, since Hollow Knight is finely crafted from start to finish, but Dead Cells is a lot of fun.
>>377981218
Also should point out, while it is Early Access, it's already a full game. They are just fine-tuning it and adding more content.

>>377981321
Which one of you is telling the truth?
>>377980051
Does it have ridiculously power/awesome weapons like a real Metroidvania? Honestly finding cool weapons was a lot of why I like them in the first place
>>377981258
>japan cant make metroidvanias
should it even be considered a proper metroidvania if it isn't tile based?
anyway la mulana
>>377981321
The current finale is just the boss at the halfway point.
>>377980051
The best in recent years by a landslide. I'd say it's not currently the best, but could be depending on how the future content turns out.
>>377980051
This was the only game in recent memory where, once I started playing it, I played it exclusively for 2 days straight to beat it.
absolute 10/10, and probably the best metroidvania.
>>377981449
Metroidvania isn't about the combat.
>>377980891

Apples and oranges. One is a metroidvania the other is a roguelite.
Indie trash
>>377982330
>buy game
>download latest version
>plug in PS4 controller, which isn't widely supported
>no input lag at all
I think that's the way the developers intended you to do it. Could be wrong though.

>AAA games for AAA gamers such as myself
I'd just like to interject for a moment. What you're referring to as Metroidvanias,
are in fact, Mertoid-like games, or as I've recently taken to calling them, Metroidlikes
.
Metroidvania is not a genre unto itself, but rather a subset of the Castlevania series distinguished by Metroid-style level design and focus on exploration and item collection comprising a full genre as defined by Metroid.
Many gamers play a modified version of Metroid-style gameplay every day, without realizing it. Through a peculiar turn of events, the genre of Metroidlike which is widely played today is often called "Metroidvania", and many of their players are not aware that it is basically Metroid gameplay, as developed by the Metroid development team.
There really are Metroidvanias, and these people are playing them, but it is just a
part of the Metroidlike genre. Castlevania is the franchise: the setting and characters which are applied to the Metroidlike genre's core design philosophy. The setting is an essential part of a video game, but useless by itself;
it can only function in the context of a complete gameplay system. Castlevania is
normally used in combination with the Metroid gameplay structure: the whole system
is basically Metroid with Castlevania added, or Metroidlike plus Castlevania. All the so-called "Metroidvania" games unrelated to the Castlevania franchise are really just Metroidlikes adapted to their own settings.

>every torrent is a virus
>>377982789
The torrent i got was the latest version and no i won't get my ps4 controller just cause 1 game is too picky, if a pc game is better played with a direct input controller rather than an xinput one then it's the game's fault not mine
Terraria is still the best. Sorry nerds.
>>377982883
>metroidlike
the genre goes back further than metroid though

you have good taste though
Are you summoning La-Mulana autist, OP?
>>377983754
Nor castlevania (prior sotn) not any metroids were proper metroidvania.
Just fyi
>>377983970
I got bored of that game in mere minutes. That rarely happens to me.

>>377984271
why couldn't the nailmasters have been boss fights? were they never intended that way or did the development team just run out of time/resources.
>>377985748
They were originally, but I think they decided to lay down on bosses after counting 30 (+10 minibosses)

did somebody say Hornet?
>>377980051
>>377980051
it isnt even a good metroidvania
im getting really tired of the obsessive cocksucking of hollow knight by people who never played 16/32 bit games and dont realize that hollow knights gameplay is behind games from the early 1990s
Wow, I can look at boring, drab ugly depressing environments AND play something that controls like actraiser 1 at the same time!
>>377988615
Haha, have a (you), my friend!
Anyone played Ori and the Blind Forest? Is it a good metroidvania?
>>377989008
You gonna sauce that now.
>>377989121
t is shit so I never saved full
dunno saource
It sure is the most fucking shilled one on /v/.
>>377989076
i liked ori
the combat is the weakest element, so if that's really important to you try before you buy

>great game discussed a lot
BREAKING NEWS
SoTN discussed a lot too
>>377980051
I thought not really having any kind of story for 2/3rds of the game really made it unengaging for me. SotN, I know I'm there to fucking kill Dracula. Hollow Knight I wander completely aimlessly for hours and hours.
>>377989920
Thanks anon, tonight's fap goes in honor of you.
>>377989943
> I wander completely aimlessly for hours and hours.
so you basically dont like what makes metroidvania a metroidvania
it's alright not for everyone
>>377990279
You just read what my problem was. I have absolutely zero reason for wandering around. In Castlevania I know my ultimate goal is to kill Dracula and I have to find my way there. In Hollow Knight it was like 14 hours before I even got a clue why I was even there.
>>377990363
this what made HK so fun for me - figuring out the mystery of hallownest. i felt like i was the first who ventured down these abandoned ruins
It was hella of a journey
>>377989943
The story is there from Hornet on, and that's way less than 2/3 in. Less than 1/5 in.
>>377980051
Right under SotN for me
