it's a really great movie, but I never understood why he (and Phantom of the Opera) were lumped into the monster pantheon when they were both really just pulp supervillains. Yeah because the sequel was like an old time adventure movie, the original is really a very slow and atmospheric kind of movie, really the 'scariest' part of it is when they show him getting wrapped up and buried alive and then the guards kill the slaves and all that shit. It's that kind of horror that transcends any kind of age barrier because it's really simply a horrifying thing to think about dying that way.

It can be argued however that the art for castlvania was both anime and Gothic art so even then there is some European influence on the series after symphony of the night. But thats entirely alse. Castlevania art was always "Anime" for japan. It only changed for us because anime didnt sell here, Hard grit realism DnD style fantasy did. Just look at Final fantasy's old ads. The game looks NOTHING like this, but it sold the fantasy to gamers in america.
