Well, I certainly wouldn't consider it "aged" by a long shot. The sprite graphics haven't aged in ways that some old 3D stuff might have, the UI is up to modern standards etc.

I think the setting is kinda generic but it's fairly polished and takes an approach much different from *Craft/AoE/whatever to RTS. No basebuilding but instead you have upgradeable cities (think of HoMM or Civ), companies that automatically engage as they reach each other's zone of control instead of individual units, that kind of stuff. To compensate for these low-mechanics features it has all kinds of features like relatively robust movement system to compensate. It doesn't offer a perfected version of that kind of formula, the design could have been brought much further, but in my opinion it presents the kind of direction RTS genre should have taken instead of kicking the bucket. Campaign suffers from the unremarkable setting/story but the missions are nice and I think the core gameplay is really solid.

In my opinion you should definitely play it, Armageddon's Blade stand-alone expansion offers campaign from the villain's point of view and you should play it as well if you like KIS. I personally don't much care for Kohan 2.

It becomes rather trivial once you figure everything out. I'm not saying it's easy to be good either, but you actually sort of feel stupid for ever being scared of all those numbers and shit all over your screen at some point. I think a common misconception is that you graduate from 4X games and move on to grand strategy, but it's just not true. They're only about as complex as one another and it's a matter of taste or what kind of mood you're in if you like both.

I've found this Dwarf fortress/Terraria hybrid to be really comfy despite a few AI pathing bugs in the later levels.

For some reason, 4X games feel so victory-focused, and yet they also feel like shit when you're trying to actually go for the victory. I wish I could have a more sandbox attitude toward them like I do for grand strategy, city builders, etc. For Anno games, I've never even touched a campaign despite playing the games for almost 20 years, I always do sandbox. But for 4X I feel the need to min/max, trying to achieve that victory. It's weird.

Yeah, I played that too. I think I just need to change my attitude toward them. I think what happens is I end up having so many resources that I have nothing to do with them so then I go for the victory, but then the victory still takes forever because of some other game mechanic and then it's just waiting around.

It's only similar to DF in that you indirectly control a town of dwarves, in a terraria like world. Every dwarf can be equipped with unique gear.
Your goal is to collect 5 portal pieces from mini-boss monsters around the stage and advance to the next biome or just chill and build.
As you expand waves of monsters begin to attack. At first you can just wall yourself off and be safe but later on it gets crazy with catapults and turrets.
There are shit loads of things to craft.

I haven't played since the DLC patches though, apparently they tried to improve it.
