And while the blue shell has no direct benefit to the person in last, it cinces the race a bit, and that, combined with other items you are more likely to get in that place, gives some chance of getting closer to first before the race is fully over. As far as I know, it's never just 1 item that wins you the whole race, it's all the items you get. Say you are in 8th and get a blue shell, knock the guy in first back a bit, the race is now closer, then you get a bullet bill and get somewhere in the middle of the race, then you get some mushrooms and manage to get a bit further. You might end up in second or third instead of 4th or 5th because you altered the overall parameters of the race

This is all just hypothetical wank though. I haven't played mariokart in ages and am mostly playing devil's advocate for the sake of conversation.

Weirdly I played Wii + Wii U versions, earned gold on everything. I weirdly was at least around half a lap in front of every AI, but then I knew the tracks inside out, used all shortcuts and did boosts properly.

So why did Mario Kart go back to 12 player races? Why not leave it at 8 and make lobbies easier to fill and not have to worry about making tracks big enough to accomodate so many players? This ruins field obstacles and banana peels if you can just drift past them easily. Even bring back the "won't slip if you stop turning and slow down" mechanic.
