These games are so good that they still hold up to this day.
>>
Fun gameplay never gets old
>>
>>377931850
Yeah they're about as good as a decent flash game.
>>
Pure gameplay bliss. Not a lot of games I can think of who apply for this honor.
F.E.A.R is the first thing that comes to mind for me.

Not without a sourceport they don't.
Now when you enable vertical mouselook and turn off the autoaim then yeah sure they're still good.

I wish there were more fantasy shooters. Heretic, Hexen and recently Ziggurat, am I missing any?

When is this series going to come back?
>>
>>377932779
Strife is sci-fi.
>>
>>377932779
Strife is great.
-hub-world design
-DOOM action
-NPC interaction
-varied weapons

It has its issues with game-breaking quests at the beginning and some AI flaws, but it's pretty good.
An prototype Deus-Ex, another good game.

I'd give it a 7/10.
>>
What are some good mods and why?
>>
Doom 1 yes
Doom 2 no

2 has awful level design

Clive Barker's undying

Doom RPG combined with Doom Rouge Like Arsenal + the monster pack played on a large variety of Oblige Maps is quite possibly one of the best mod combos out there for Doom.

Demonsteele is quite nice as well.

Thanks m8, just bought it off gog. Should be something to play on my crappy laptop if I can't sleep.
>>
>>377933271
2 has more enemies per level and gives you more ammo to deal with them. But levels are definitely smaller and weirder. Like a bunch of challenge missions instead of actual levels.
>>
>>377934889
I'll add to his recommendation of Undying, the game is severely underrated. Great mix of magic + guns.
>>
>>377935047
more enemies and the super shotgun don't make up for the bad level design, it was one of the things that make Doom great to play to this day
>>
>>377934650
He's at the very beginning of the game.
I'm sure someone will bring him up.

Every DOOM game is great. It's actually impressive how much they hold up, considering DOOM is almost 25 years old.

If you haven't played 64 EX, do it. It's a source port written specifically for Doom 64, and it runs perfectly.

At the risk of triggering some people in the thread, I was playing Brutal Doom co-op with some friends online yesterday, and that mod is fun as shit. It's not Doom, but it's a fun game regardless.
>>
>>377936742
Doom 3 isn't great.
>>
>>377937260
It's controversial, but I don't know if I'd say it's a bad game.
>>
>>377937617
I wouldn't call it bad nor would I call it great.

I agree. Though I still replay it once a few years for some reason.

>>
>>377939648
I tried out Project MSX not too long ago, that was fun. I haven't dove too deep into the rabbit hole of Doom community content.
>>
>>377939891
There's this video >>377936424 and Icarusliv3s's channel, who's a guy who reviews Doom mods, so maybe you could look at that.
>>
>>377931850

i agree
>>
>>377939891
Also, /vr/ has threads about Doom, in case you didn't know about it, where even certain Doom modders appear in it.
>>
>>377936742
I thought Brutal Doom was a fun way to replay it, thats the great part with Doom. There is so much fan content that can satisfy just about anyones taste you could easily play Doom and nothing else for the rest of your life and never run out of shit to play.

>If you haven't played 64 EX, do it. It's a source port written specifically for Doom 64, and it runs perfectly.
I played through most of it recently after having not played the N64 version for at least 15 years. Amazing port it feels like the game was always meant to be on PC in the first place. I can see why people consider it the true Doom 3 (even moreso with Doom 4 making it the canon sequel to Doom 64). I wasn't a big fan of the ambient soundtrack at first but it really grew on me and just made the game creepy as hell.

Never
>>
>>377940638
Snapmap was always doomed (no pun intended) to failure simply because of how limited it was.
>>
>>377940938
What's worse is when some of those limitations looked like they could have been easily fixed, like using DLC weapons for it.
>>
>>377941272
I'm still pretty fuckin mad nearly all the DLC we got was for the garbage CoD/Halo clone multiplayer. I think snapmap received a few updates but not much. Its a shame really because of how supportive ID has been in the past of fan content and especially now that Denuvo is gone there's no excuse.
>>
>>377941540
I heard somebody made some extraction tool for NuDoom, so they could rip stuff from the game, like models and sounds.
>>
What are some good randomizers to play with Oblige levels?
>>
>>377933271
But it has the Super Shotgun and great monsters.

That's what source ports are for
>>
>>377931850
Just started playing DOOM (original PC) and jesus is the control tight. Huge sprawling levels that encourage exploration and some of the most satisfying weapons in vidya. I get a half chub every time I fire that shotgun at point black range. Also it can be used from a far enough distance that it still does massive damage. Shit is cash.
>>
>>377942937
I liked how the secrets were handled, where one was a timed secret that ends up opening a route to a secret level.
>>
>>377933047
>Strife
>Doom action

Strife doesn't play like Doom, it plays like Serious Sam. It completely fails to emulate the 90s genre.

I don't understand why there are so many low quality 90s throwback fps games that don't do anything new or exciting with the genre. Why buy games like Strife or even Ziggurat when they play worse than a Doom wad? Fuck, Demonsteele is years old and it's far more impressive than these indie games.
>>
>>377943216
Is this bait?
>>
>>377942227
>>377932409
Is it really a general consensus that it's "better" to enable vertical mouselook for Doom?

It just feels wrong to me, like I'm not playing it the way the developers initially intended it to be. I don't wanna make a game harder/easier than it should be and I personally think it's fine as it is anyways
>>
>>377943216
It doesn't not play like Serious Sam at all.
If I had to boil it down to simple descriptors, I would say.
Serious Sam is Smash TV: FPS Edition
DOOM is well...DOOM.
Strife is DOOM: Adventure Edition.
>>
>>377943357

I'll give Ziggurat a pass because it has unlockables and doesn't take itself too seriously, but I loaded it up yesterday for the first time in years and it just played so terribly. It doesn't actually try to compare itself to Hexen so maybe that it's an unfair comparison but Strife has no excuse.

>>377943496

Strife fundamentally plays like SS because all you do is back peddle while enemies come at you in a straight line. Doom combat is about weaving through projectiles and corners and learning how to properly fight the different enemies. SS and Strife have one strategy and that's to backpedal.
>>
>>377943736
Aren't you confusing Strife and Strafe?
>>
>>377943852

I have no idea anymore. Whatever the new scam is.
