I think it helps, though. The sillier beliefs that people have are like a more condensed version of the mainstream beliefs.

The vast, vast majority of christians don't believe that god is a physical being who manifests as the red spot on Jupiter, but I'd argue that the vast majority of christians DO believe that god is a singular, male entity that actively rules over the universe to some extent.

There are outliers on both ends who put more thought into it, but the middle ground is the basic belief of god = literal omnipotent entity.


Also of interest to me in all religions is how people are always able to go into significantly more detail about the negative afterlife/punishments that god will dish out rather than the positives, or even what god is. Preachers of all religions will go on all day about how shitty hell is and how much god hates x, but they've barely got 5 minutes of material on what god is and what god spends their day doing.
