I like Souls but this is absurd. Gameplay-wise they're not even very good, so I don't get when people do gameplay comparisons between DaS/DeS/BB and something like Dragon's Dogma. I've even seen people asking for a "Soulslike" DMC, what the fuck

While I dislike the term the fact that we have games obviously trying very hard to copy the gameplay gives it some justification.

I mean just look at the Surge and try to explain it to the average gamer in the easiest terms - you will want to say it.

I just think it's amazing how a game released 6 years ago has influenced the entire industry so much.

I hear "dark souls elements" a lot if that counts.

Like loosing your exp/currency and then being able to retrieve it somehow.

I don't mind anyone using it. I knew what people meant when they said Hollow Knight is like Dark Souls crossed with Super Metroid. The game was exactly what I expected.

Any game without a map is more like Dark Souls than it is like GTA (and Far Cry, AC, Horizon, BotW, and most other mostly single-player games that we're seeing lately)

More games are more similar to one another than any time I can remember. Games that do not include the various tropes and conveniences and gig-economy structure that are common to pretty much all AAA non-shooters, give players a similar experience to what they get from Souls games. It is really not about mechanics and more about the experience and structure.

I think that for all the things players like about Souls games, like freedom and exploration, visceral, weighty combat and complex mechanics, the reason that the style has such an explosive popularity is that it's a rejection of the last ten years of big-publisher game design. I'm pleased as punch that a wider audience has rediscovered the fun of loose structure and moderate challenge. If "Souls" is just a codeword for games-as-they-were, then I'll keep using loosely, but I think we all agree that it refers specifically to the modern-day Metroidvania.
