It all makes sense.

Alyx crying and saying "don't leave me" was Gordon's inner monologue towards G-Man

Eli should have done a better job at preparing for unforeseen consequences. He was warned.

I dunno, man. He's kinda the driving force behind everything in the series.
>>
>>377894584
This. I mean it's a HELLUVAN experience when you first play these games. The writing for the G-Man, and Shapiro's performance of him is gripping. Great fucking stuff. But when you really, really put it under scrutiny, there isn't a whole lot the G-Man could possibly want, betraying his entire mystique. He's either:

1. Gordon from the future, so that's stupid.
2. Working for a bunch of higher minded consciousnesses who want the Combine wiped out for their own wants (which just boils down to resources or territory)
3. Is doing it for shits and giggles

None of these are compelling, so then you're forced to look for interesting character arcs in the other characters like Alyx, Kleiner, whomever. And then you realize they don't have any. Half-Life isn't a very well written series.

Whaddya mean ruin?
It's just higher resolution textures and a couple of ferns here and there. What's so wrong with it?
>>
>>377895126
1 is just silly and doesn't answer anything.

2 and 3 are sane answers, though pedestrian.
But there is nothing wrong with being unoriginal with your motivations. As you say the performance is great. That's what matters. It can elevate bland writing to something special.

He doesn't need to be a character really, and shouldn't really be analyzed as such. He's just a plot device with a face used to slap Gordon where Gordon needs to be for the games to happen.
He gets a bit more personal in episode 2 but it's still just plot-devicey personal.

>tfw never played past half-life 1
>tfw thought everyone knew but I didn't want to spoil it for myself
so it was all a lie? they literally just thought "what if we insert this creepy dude throughout" and thought they would figure it out over time?
>>
>>377896652
I guess you're right. Ferns do improve gameplay a bit
>>
>>377896848
I don't have issue with him being a plot device. It's just there's no other characters to really fall back on. Alyx and co. are likable for certain. But they're the same characters three games in. The performances are good, which as you say, really elevates the content. And of course the setpieces are glorious, as is the worldbuilding of Half-Life. Just leaves a bit to be desired in actual characters when you really scrutinize it.
>>
>>377897107
While you're right, not everything needs to be character heavy. The pace of the Half Life games is incredibly fast. There really isn't any time for small-talk and that is what is missing to flesh out characters. But what little you do have is so dense in character-building that it feels like so much more.

Dr. Breen is one of my favorite characters in any video game. RIP ;_;7
>>
>>377894584

To be fair, we didn't exactly get to experience where Valve was going with him. There's far too many unanswered questions to really write the character off entirely.

That being said, enigmatic so mysterious trope is a bad trope and is often something hacks do. So it's reasonable to criticize it.
>>
>>377897020
They're obviously building up to something, but as of now there's only more questions and zero answers.
>>
>>377898435
Any trope can be more common and likely to be written poorly, but that isn't the fault of the trope.
>>
>>377897020
No, there's something involving him deeply. He would mention Clients, Employers, etc.

>tfw He tries taking you back to stasis, but the Vortigants actually push him away and he gets visibly angry.
>>
Its the ageold problem of trying to make a super mysterious plot where there are a million weird things and hints that imply something huge but they didnt actually write anything that ties it all togther and just made up as much complex shit as they could.

All images repeat twice except for pic related, you better read it.
Also, In HL1 just befor entering the portal to battle Nihilant, you can hear voices of scientist trying to save someone, saying that he is unconscious. You can heare it if you stay near the portal.

This means that it is possible that all this is just a dream, that Gordon in reality, is just in a coma after the HL1 incident.

Driving force behind what? An experiment goes wrong, aliens come from a weird dimension and kill people. That's it.

Then some weird nazi-regime aliens take over earth and oppress everyone.

There is no plot to Half-Life beyond "there be aliens, go fight them."

>>377898435

Valve had 2 games and 2 smaller episodes to give any shape or direction to the game's overarching plot and Gmans character.

He is just smoke and mirrors. He's designed to look like way more than he is. It's pretentiousness at it's finest.

G-Man is the one who gave Black Mesa the Xen crystal, likely knowing it would cause the disaster that signaled the Combine toward Earth. With his status as Gordon's "employer", he's pretty much using Gordon for his own means, whatever they may be. He took Gordon out of his eternal stasis for a reason.

try to be original once. The voices you hear when you get to the portal are just voices slipping in from the human world

That ending to HL2 was a mindfuck. I still haven't played Episode 1 and 2 but goddamn it Valve please. Why can't they just do it?
>>
>>377902058
This bothers me so much.

So they don't want to have anything to do with Half-Life anymore. Fine. But why don't they give Laidlow a call? Have him write a book, wrap everything up. We get a closure we've longed for decades, they get sales. But no, they have to pretend half-life bever happened.

Now that it's never ever gonna be revealed, how are you going to headcanon it /v/?

I think the only satisfying payoff now would be that he is a time travelling human who attained a sort of quasi-Godhood (from a disaster in another dimension) but simultaneously can't interact with the environment (so he can manipulate time and space and psychically mess with people) and the Combine are actually unknowingly bringing about the collapse of the multiverse by using dimensional portal technology. He might be on a council of other similar beings who have suffered the same fate.

So G-Man, knowing that Freeman is motivated by his direct creation of the portals into this universe, uses Freeman at optimal points to defeat the Combine and he will eventually get Freeman to restore order by destroying portal technology and collapsing the connections between the dimensions.

I know a lot of people think this is stupid, but I always liked the idea that the experiment gave Freeman some sort of quantum powers that allow him to mess with causality and/or flip between otherwise identical universes. So when you quicksave and die or otherwise quickload, Gordan is actually supposed to be doing that as well. Basically, Freeman learned to be a great fighter out of trial and hundreds of errors, because every time he gets killed he can quantum leap to another causality where it hasn't happened and try to do better this time.

>>377907601

G-man created everything in the universe.

Now he sends the Combine against the human race who have forgotten.. G-man just want his children to be better than them self and evolve beyond him.
>>
I think this series has actually prospered from not having any more games released. Whatever they do is never going to live up to the hype and head canon people have built up.

It's gonna be mgs v but even worse. Everyone that's constantly bitching about valve not making hl3 will be the first ones bitching when it comes out and doesn't live up to the hype.
