Bought it and played like 8 hours in what felt like 2, hilariously I only beat the first two chapters because of how I'm playing, it's been awhile since I've played a disgaea so I'm having a great time
I never use named characters, but I guess my favorite is Sera because she's literally the only female I have so far
My favorite generic rn is female hearler (male) with the evilty for 200% increased exp from healing and defensive equipment for memes

Rabbit class is the cutest, but I'm having a lot of fun with the Zombie Maid. Items are versetile, so I can have her go on the offensive while healing off any damage she takes with healing items, and if an enemy is out of her spear range, 2 throwing knives work just fine. She's cute so that's a bonus, Yandere personality a best.

Beat everything and "maxed out" a handful of characters 99m in every stat, atk dmg cap, and the more important Evilities at least, fuck that Evility that increases your stats through boss kills to free up a few more slots, I didn't bother with that.

Metallia, Priere, or Pram when it comes to DLC.

Thieves in D5 have a higher chance to steal than others but unlike in the other games non-Thief units aren't capped at 50% steal rate so they aren't really anything special when it comes to the endgame and everyone easily reaches 99% chance

D1 is good for its characters and very basic SRPG goodness, D5 is good for how beginner friendly it made a lot of the more involved systems at play in the later Disgaea games.

Disgaea feels a lot better to play than the DeSu games. DeSu is honestly dreadfully slow for a modern SRPG, one of the best aspects of Disgaea, and Megaten in general, is how quick and snappy the menus and every action you take are, it's very satisfying. DeSu managed to miss that entirely somehow.

Eh. D5 plays very, very, differently from the other games. It's very simplified/streamlined and not always for the better. It might make you have the wrong expectations going into something like the remakes of D3 and D4 that will bombard you with dozens of different systems that are each more complicated than everything D5 has to offer combined, but I don't think playing D5 makes you unable to appreciate and fall in love with them.

Try the demo, it has the first chapter. If you really can't stand animu I think you probably won't like D5 very much though. It went full on generic archtypes with its characters and story and you can easily see everything that happens in it coming from a mile away. You do have to reincarnate him or use skill scrolls. The master/pupil systems were too complicated so they did away with it all.
You can have her use offensive magic by being in the same Club as a mage but that's only so long they stand next to each other, you can't actually pass skills on in that way in D5.

That's honestly the biggest problem with the characters in D5. They all mostly keep to themselves and barely ever talk and banter with one another. A few of them are very interesting and could be great characters, like Usalia and Christo for example, but they never fucking engage each other or do anything. It's sad. They are supposedly this tight knit group that helps each other overcome their pasts/traumas and grow as people, but they really don't act like they even want to be in each others company. Even when they have their character arcs it's mostly just them finishing it up on their own and the crew just kinda hanging back and repeating "We support you" over and over, it's so boring it makes me cry

Killia has a lot of standout character traits though. He comes off as brooding and aloof but he's very endearing, namely his brotherly relationship with Usalia, and a ton of smaller quirks (i.e the only person who's nice to Prinnies, his willingness to be kind to others, his habit of apologizing and trying to set things right, and especially his cooking and """art""", both of which he takes a lot of pride in). I'm only on chapter 6 but I'm liking Killia a lot more than say, Adell, because while he's very driven in his goal to kill Void, his softer side keeps slipping out in just regular conversation. You say everyone in D5 is a rehash of someone else or some personified trope, but neither of these are applying to Killia, I feel like you just didn't pay attention to these things and just said the character was flat. I'm at the end. They should beg the people who left to come back because it was honestly pretty shit even by disgaea standards. No one is really likeable because they are all either bland or fucking annoying. The plot feels like a complete departure from the series and the mas get fucking tedious. just because you can make huge maps with 30+ characters doesn't mean you should.

Oh and the version of D2 zenon awakening feels weak because it's not at 1700 like hers was.

I didn't really like many of the story maps in this one, it felt a lot of the difficulty in them boiled down to 1-tile wide bridges keeping most of your party in a straight line and getting fucked by magic or ranged attacks.

Nintendo puts more effort into hiding their games being rehashes than this series.

I've seen SRPGs today that evolve the look of the genre more than this series. Even the Tales series puts more effort into making their games look better because they utilize the console's power given to them. This just looks like they're using the barest minimum effort, despite them jumping from PS3 to PS4, not even caring about convincing people that it looks any different to the last game.

I'm not saying everything should be cel-shaded 3D models but I would have thought that by now we would have evolved beyond maps being a a bunch of blocks in a void. The reason that was a thing with SRPGs was due to consoles limitations and Disgaea 5 has no excuse as it's on a console that has more than enough power to support visual improvement in the series.

They aren't that great though since they only have their very barebones Prinny aptitudes and evilities so even enmasse they can't really compare from what I remember.
Adell's overload is absolutely disgusting since it's just a straight up multiplier at the very end of the calculations and doesn't count for the +200% atk cap that limits most other units already sitting at 99m. His special has the highest attack out of anything single target in the game too, doing even more than Killia's ultimate by a little bit.
Likewise Killia's Tyrant Revelio is pretty disgusting just because it lets him act three times.

d5 is my first disgaea but i really loved the hundred knight music. it has so much variety, some songs are super comfy, others downright depressing, then there is ones that makes you almost afraid, and others that are just so fucking happy its hard not to smile. this might be my new favorite composer

Any time I try to look up the mechanics of it, it just makes my head spin. I just use Failure dungeons to get good items and XP.

Just started playing Disgaea 5 complete, I'm new to the game and went to retrieve all the DLC content but the Prinnies and the free HL.

The new character came equipped with weapons that are certainly too powerful for lvl1, and I also got a lot of free weapons that are way better than everything else I have, so for now I'm not using any of this, just the new characters with equipment from the shop. So what should I do with all this other stuff? Should I just throw away all the free weapons to not ruin the game balance?

From what I recall, Laharl had been having signs of compassion throughout the game anyway but that didn't mean he didn't hold back from beating down Lamington in a fit of rage. Besides that, Laharl only spared him because he was sick of fighting.

That may be the core theme but here's the thing. If you give characters a backstory where everyone they love has been slaughtered and still keep this theme and then some, it can be really insulting. I don't give games like Disgaea 1 shit for having this theme because the catalyst of why they acted was low enough for them to hold back and spare the people that wronged them. When you go, for lack of a better word, berserk in writing motivations for vengence, you better deliver accordingly.

There's no need to save up, you honestly can't really do anything that's a waste in D5.
If you don't like a character's class you can just reincarnate it later on. Infact that's something you will want to do later on in the postgame, when you use a class you get class mastery for it which you keep when you reincarnate into something else, and that class mastery gives you better stat growths, so ideally you will want to master every class on one character to get your stats up higher.

All the DLC scales with your chapter progression.
It's supposed to always be roughly on par with where you're at level wise but they probably didn't balance it perfectly for some of them. If you do it right at the start of Chapter 1 or as soon as you enter postgame it's trivial.

So I got this game because I liked the demo but I have no clue what is going on. The only tactical strategy games I've played before is xcom ew, xcom 2, and about 2/3 of fire emblem awakening. All of the different mechanics and customization and item/skill growths are very overwhelming. I want to get into it though since the actual battles are fun. Are there any basic tips I should know or things like that? Is a lot of stuff not super necessary until end game? I know the game basically has infinite grinding and difficulty in the item world

One thing to note is equipment is far more important than levels and you'll want to upgrade a lot. Innocents (the names inside the items for example Master or Physician) aren't really important at the beginning but if you can get a few Statisticians you'll be good (they give bonus exp)
