it's interesting though because Yakuza is such an under rated game. Although I don't know virtually anything about the series, don't know why people market it to others as a Japanese GTA. I felt like the story was better, combat was better and is nothing really in comparison to GTA, other than "It's a crime game in a city"

Yeah, but the older games also tie tons of substories to said minigames, Kenzan onward ties a bunch of items for modding to them (Sacred Wood, Sacred Wood (Ash), Sacred Wood (Oak) being the primary examples that were locked to baseball until 4), and all the games require you to do them for the completion lists many different ways. Certain games also gave you Heat actions (Golf and Baseball in 2 and finishing moves from melon cutting in Kenzan) though that wasn't that common.

They also mean for you to do the actual gambling stuff for money (So Cee-lo, Koi Koi, Cho-han, Oicho-Kabu, Roulette, Blackjack, Poker, and Baccarat) while the rest is for the list and world building. Hell, in 4 and Dead Souls you can literally wander over to the Ryugujo, play Baccarat like two times, and then walk out of there with a million yen in your pocket which you can get to 10 mil in under 10 minutes, it's ridiculous and 10mil basically sets you for several playthroughs. Honestly though, they really need to rework pachinko and slots because they are absolutely useless in making you any money at all since it takes hours to amass even like 8000 balls in pachinko which can't even buy you a single platinum plate.

I don't think it's unanimous. Having to go back to the storage facility for every single boulder you want to destroy is super gay and so is the pixel hunting bullshit. But it is a pretty phenomenal experience that nails the torture theme perfectly.

I don't think it's underrated at all. Yakuza is pretty neat but the combat has sucked since the first game and never got much better. And whether you like the story or not the gameplay never evolved past running from one side of the city to the other and back while fighting random battles.
