I'm so bad at this gamu
>>
i literally dropped the game a while ago, was about to do DD1 and shit just got grimer the more champion quests i did.
>>
i just get fucked over to much, stopped playing a while ago

idk if im just super unlucky but its not fun missing all the time and getting crit'd
>>
Y'all better be running at full torchlight, dark runs mean more enemy damage and a shitty time in general
>>
How's the ps4/vita versions? Are they relatively on par in terms of content with the PC version? do they play well otherwise? Want to get it but i'd like to get it for my vita for on the go.
>>
>>377867350
There is no being "good" at this game. All you can do is grind to make the RNG more favorable to you.
>>
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0GW-Y445jUc
>>
basically im glad i torrented and never paid for it

whereas with isaac i torrented then bought it. both are rng heavy (i think?) so it's comparable
>>
I'm on week fucking 111
I'm on the third darkest dungeon quest right now.
Defeat is the fire that tempers victory my friend
>>
If you actually learn to play the game, bad luck is mitigated a lot

>I opened a thing and everyone got stressed
Did you use the right trinket for the curio?
>The right what?

>My occultist is bad at healing
Does he have the healing trinket equipped?
>The what?

>These gravel pile things cost me too much stress and light
Did you bring 2-3 shovels?
>I can't afford that many
Why don't you have any money?
>I have to spend it all on shit in town
Are you using your stress reduction abilities to heal your guys for free in battles and in camp?
>but the jester guy sucks!

>This enemy keeps critting me!
Why don't you just kill him first?
>he's in a rank I can't target!
Well organize your teams better then. How about just clearing the corpses so he moves to a rank you can hit, or using a movment ability to get him out of the rank you can't hit?
>Those abilities do no damage so I don't use them
>>
Easy game.

Identical aside from mod support.

>They all die at the second hit on death's door despite having 80% deathblow resist
>>
I like it. Once you become familiar with the mechanics of everything it becomes much more manageable. I'm doing a radiant playthrough and it's so nice not having level restrictions bogging me down on doing a run. That was worst part of the original mode. So many times I would get fucked because a crucial character would out level something and I would be stuck with having to use a shit comp.

I'm trying to help people that bitch about the game being too rng heavy by demonstrating how it really isn't that bad

Max out your carriage so that you can recruit a full team of level 0 shitters every run and just send them down the dungeon with no supplies. If they die you lose nothing. If they escape alive you made 100% of profit and maybe those shitters can handle a harder difficulty next time.

you gotta know when you get fucked and salvage what you can, there's no shame in running if things get ugly. With prep and knowledge you can go the whole time up to the DD levels without losing anyone
174 hrs here
>>
>>377871512
It's turn based with base management like darkest dungeon but in a 3D environment with many more methods of advance and attack, much fairer than DD but less forgiving (you can't heal permanent debuffs like you can in DD). Also gives you a bunch of factions to choose from.
>>
>>377871602
Jester solo can lower the accuracy of your enemies
Occultist weakening hex or Vestal hand of light can lower the damage of enemies
Man at Arms, Hound Master, Antiquarian can stack protection/dodge on your party members to keep them alive
Antiquarian and Man at Arms can stacking buff the dodge of your team

Stacking stun trinkets on any stun character is effective enough to let you stun enemies even multiple times in a row

I love the art style and atmosphere of this game, but everything besides that and the party building and combat is shallow as fuck. I would love the fuck out of it if they took those good elements and built a proper plot-driven dungeon exploration game, like Etrian Odyssey.

As is, I sometimes feel the urge to play, but then remember what a pointless grind it is and that quickly kills it.

>There's virtually no skill involved outside of just boosting your heroes stats and hammering away at the "gameplay".

wouldn't that apply to most turn based RPG though ? Or Even some dungeon crawlers and Roguelikes ?

You have a selection of classes each with a selection of skills from which you must take only a few...

One of the most popular roguelike right now, Dungeon Crawl Stonesoup, has literally no attack buttons: you only bump into enemies and it's a dice roll. Yet there are tournaments and people with over 50% success rate on their runs.

I think people getting screwed over by games with strong random elements really are just whiny bitches that got too used to min maxing following guides and tried and true routes. When they need to improvise when confronted by the unexpected they just lose their shit and give up to run back to their safe zone RPGs.
>>
>>377873608
1: As mentioned before, the vast majority of skills and even entire classes are useless. Stagecoach gives random classes, with random skills (though you can completely bypass this with backer heroes and get your Hellion spam going Week 1). Early on the Blacksmith is locked and a bit later it's available but expensive. Should the game not give you at least a few useful things, you will fail through no fault of your own because even though say, the Plague Doctor should be a legitimate choice, and her blight and stunning abilities should be valid tactical options they are not.

2: Regarding the usual presentation, of complaints of RNG in combat these are self generated by virtue of falling for the newbie traps either by lack of critical thought, or sheer stubbornness/being different/being "tactical"/etc. It's simple math at work. If an enemy has a 20% critical hit chance, the odds they critically hit you at least once are 20% if they attack you once, 36% if they attack you twice, 48.8% if they attack you 3 times and so on. Critical hits can just as easily be diseases, or debuffs, or any other on hit effect. The more chances you give RNG the more likely that RNG screwage becomes. In normal games this is balanced out by various defensive and recovery mechanics so that that, and simple attrition do not force a damage spam fest. This one intentionally breaks said mechanics and actively punishes everything except damage spam while rewarding damage spam, resulting in a game where you're either bored and grinding, but winning, or bored and grinding, but losing and raging about RNG. And the reason for that is very simple. Using skills that mathematically don't work (anything but direct damage) increases combat length by a factor of 2, 3, or even more. That's more enemy actions and more bad things happening.

Shit....
>>
Don't like how you have to constantly level up and recruit new party members just so the characters you want to play can get experience. Other then that it's a great game.

Look at the size difference between reynaulds wife and son and the people dismas kills. That's only reynaulds family if dismas went back in time to when reynaulds son was much younger and smaller to assassinate him. Then you have the paradox of how reynaulds could check up on his family if they were already in his past by time-travelling dismas.

What redemption is reynauld seeking anyway? He's just a crusdser, he didn't do anything wrong in his backstory.
>>
>>377873842
The plots in etrian are perfect enough. Just enough of a story to get the imagination going without too much bullshit
>>
>>377873608
>Remember, anyone who understands the game mechanics is spamming Hellions and damage in a dark run. This means you find plenty of gold, and the actual problem is inventory space, or more precisely tiny stack sizes + many different but interchangable types of "gold stacks" (gold, 6 different gems...) So you grind and grind, and then drop most of the loot you grind out in favor of other loot. Getting more loot you'll just drop anyways does not help matters and making gold stacks slightly larger is both more than canceled by the 2 new stacks of gold variants, and made irrelevant by the fact you'll be dropping gold in favor of stacks worth more than 2k anyways.

>Further, the heirloom grind is specifically unaffected even though that was the actual grind point. It was affected by a different change, but as that different change results in grinding 15% fewer deeds and 50% more crests on the blacksmith it really at best shuffled the grind, and at worst further amplified it while allegedly reducing it which is also a classic move by this company.

>Now, people that don't understand the game mechanics are the ones having gold problems. They're using useless classes and skills, they're leaving the lights on, they're constantly poking the proverbial Giant Alien Spider events, they're wasting money on stress relief, they're not investing money in the gold standard trinkets. They're the ones that actually need this. Except now they have a literally useless character, so the marginally higher gold they get is more than countered by their mismanagement of what invariably goes wrong.

>Enter a Long quest, immediately camp. 3 Merchants spam the give me a trinket skill, 1 whatever uses a no night attack skill. Do this twice and leave. Repeat. They'll get bombed with negative quirks and diseases but those don't matter as this is your infinite gold farm team, like Suicide Squadding but much faster. They'll also get stress but leaving a quest caps your stress at 100 even if it's higher and doing this shouldn't make you go 100-200 so they'll never die (and if they do, replace with more level 0s, they're infinite and free). You might need 4 food (2 per camp) for this. You'll still make much more selling the junk and keeping the few useful trinkets (read: those that promote the alpha strike dark running). As an added bonus this shouldn't even advance the week (other than the week they get afflicted) so you literally have infinite grind time even if there is allegedly a time limit. Completely unintended, but the only time the class actually gains you resources as intended.

>It's something of a meme in this point that I have 1,337 hours in this game. It's important we understand here that I am reviewing Darkest Dungeon as produced by Red Hook Studios. As such, the time I spent making this a real, deep, balanced game and enjoying that is only relevant in the sense that it shows what could have been if the actual devs had done this. Because the base game was and still is a shallow walking simulator full of obvious choices, the negative tone stands.

...

>So while I'm sitting here with a perfectly functional and long lasting game filled with actual choices and difficulty, I am watching as the official version steadily becomes easier, more one dimensional, and more incoherent. I'm keeping tabs on it and firetesting it periodically. For example when the new bosses Flesh/Cannon/Prophet were added, I went in blindly with level 0 characters. They trivially won of course. They then trivially beat the level 3 bosses despite just being random damage characters while still at level 0. They probably could have beaten the level 5 bosses, except protection mechanics were different back then so they'd have just hit for 0 and eventually died. The point of this test was very simple - if the game was actually difficult and deep now I'd be punished for disrespecting it so heavily. I wasn't. Indeed, the only thing that provided any resistance is the Ghoul, and that's only because entering dungeons with a 3 level handicap gives 30 stress on entry and -75% stress resist. This was also the Heart Attack patch, yet no one had one (and you couldn't turn them off yet either). So even with what is effectively more than double stress damage + other handicaps (a level 0 character dies after 93 effective stress damage, not counting entry), the game was still a joke. In fact, it was more of one than when I was a 5 hour noob and still rofflestomping everything at the very beginning when I first got the game.

You can change certain settings of the game files so that characters aren't restricted to only going to dungeons only around their level.

I did this so that I could take characters on easy missions while the others rested. Works nicely and frankly it doesn't make the difficulty any easier it just takes out a fuck ton of the time required for leveling 20+ heroes. Felt nice having a "one of" team, made me like (and hate) certain characters a ton more.

The disaster zone started on the Corpse and Hound patch, released July 15th 2015. It's important we understand here absolutely every aspect of this patch, not just the corpse meme made the game worse in some way. Either it added another trap option in the Hound(master), it added more power creep in locked positive quirks, it added more grind in various "features"... what's more, nearly all of this was hardcoded, so there was no way of removing the grind and tedium and replacing it with actual difficulty. The corpse meme that everyone got stuck on is that an enemy that doesn't fight back adds difficulty, which sounds laughable when you actually think about it but most don't, the game having self selected out critical thinkers quite effectively by this point. This of course kills discussion about difficulty, because instead of it being about actual sources of difficulty which the game lacks (enemy stat and AI buffs, synergies, and so on) you just have some trash on the ground that does nothing. Of course, streamers/casuals were just using bad teams and clicking on whatever was in front of them blindly, which is the only logical reason I can see why they got this idea at all. Obviously if you're blindly clicking the thing in front of you, putting garbage in front of you would make it "harder".

The real reason this patch is so important is because while people with a background in system analysis like me caught the problems with the game and its decline and some questionable things from the developers early, this patch made them so blatant that everyone noticed. As a result, this patch was met with an overwhelming wave of negativity - and while it was parried by the corpse strawman only about half of it was actually about corpses, the rest correctly identified some or all of the other problems.

As for the final release version itself, well I long since got tired of the boring, bland, one dimensional grind so I wrote a basic script that basically runs around and holds 1. Send it with a standard damage spam team and it's the same "experience" as actually being in front of your computer while letting you do something else that actually requires thought and effort. Long story short, damage spam bot vs final dungeon = bot easily wins, proving the game hasn't changed at all. Of course, Never Again requires grinding out more Hellions because those ones are scared of absolutely nothing and I have no interest in doing that, of grinding out 4 redundant clone teams. Grind being repeating the same trivial thoughtless tasks... if the combat and runs were not all thoughtless copy pastes it'd be less grindy even if it were the same length, and I have well north of 10,000 hours on turn based RPGs so I am well versed on both long games and grind.

Now, what Red Hook obviously does want is review bait for their review fodder game. As mentioned at the beginning, it looks ok for about 5 hours then breaks down very quickly after that point. Most reviewers (as in the professional kind, not just users on Steam) give it less than that (and sometimes zero, such as when release announcements contain pre alpha video footage) and then mindlessly praise it. Though who give it more time, even one complete run say something very different, this being a game in which your understanding and enjoyment are inversely proportionate anyone who does grind out the entire thing will reach the same conclusions as me and other veterans about the mechanics even if they were not aware of all the other stuff regarding the developer/community happening in the background. Which is a good part of the reason why Joesph Anderson's review is going viral. He reached more or less the same conclusions about the game but on his own.

and googles also telling me that there's recorded Leprosy cures around the 1800's which is roughly when Darkest Dungeon takes place (based on the firearms technology in the game).

But keep in mind that Darkest Dungeons characters are all based from different ages of history. The latest being the Occultist who is very obviously Lovecraftian inspired and that wasn't a thing till the 1920s

As mentioned earlier, for some player, winning and losing at a game makes or break a game. If something random or unexpected happen, they will usually blame the game's design/RNG since they should be entitled to a win for the effort they've invested in the game.

Therefore they do not learn from their mistakes and never improve the "management" element they seem to completely overlook.

I have seen these kind of player fail at a game, reload and do the exact same thing ad nauseum in a ever increasing rage until they have the RNG in their favor.

What does everyone think about using backer trinkets/heroes?

Most of the heroes are complete garbage but a couple of them (looking at you Ncredible Bulk) make a ridiculously strong base to build a level 6 from and some of the backer trinkets have competently laughable drawbacks as well

They lose stress by not getting brought on missions if you simply don't bring them. Also you can use de-stressing abilities in your farm dungeons

>>377882421
As long as your heroes are in positions where they can actually utilise their skills, which doesn't really require much skill or thinking because the game tells you, you could hypothetically win entirely on rng alone.
Of course the chances are incredibly low but it's still there, and will keep increasing to pretty good chances with some basic rng manipulation (that once again the game is transparent about) like torch light.
I don't know why you're so defensive over this. I don't hate the game at all, it's just incredibly boring and only gets marginally better in the late game

Well you've got that the wrong way around.

DD has manageable RNG where you can somewhat reduce the damage done if something goes wrong and recover most of the time. You just have to prepare yourself for it which is what every single person that cries about the RNG doesn't do.
Isaac however can fuck you over with items, you can get literally useless items that make a run next to impossible.

Similar result perhaps, probably different circumstances though.
The fact that he fights again and again and again drills in more of a fucked up soldier attitude, pillage and looting probably just circumstantial as he finds himself not giving a fuck about anything.

I love how people ALWAYS forget the fact that not everyone is a neet with nothing to do except grind on darkest dungeon. A lot of people gave up on it because of that. There's just simply no time for it because it was made to be such a burden to get through, and not because it's specifically hard either.

I'll never understand the way people gloat that grinding is hard. I've read that a lot of people are giving it a second chance now that they've reduced it.

A tank and healer are only reserved for boss fights, since the ability to take damage for others at a reduced % with a further % to dodge from natural tank buffs ensure greater victory. Game is faulty as fuck, and I've read around that it needed major patches before it got good.

When you need to grind money, you use throw away members. When you want to clear quests, you take a healer. When you want to beat bosses, you take a healer and tank since all tanks in the game do good damage.

I think you're the one that needs to stop being a prancing homo man and see how faulty the design of the game is. FTL was infinitely a better game over all.

This game felt interesting for first several hours but ended up being hard for hardness sake and grind because grind is fun. right?

Like i remember watching some guy playing it from EA and up to (by then) current version (past recordings), and in the beginning it was pretty fair untill one patch hit and after it he was constantly assraped, took crits all the time (blanket fire crits are fun amirite) and other ass bullshiterry.
And i hate the "it's easier to kill off your mercs instead of trying to heal them beacuse they accuire negative perks really fast" type of game design. And don't tell me "it's okay to lose all your rooster because you will still have your hamlet upgrades lul".

I'm 18hrs into the game and lost a Leper I had since the first hour cause the mobs wouldn't get off his dick. I almost felt bad or would have felt bad but you learn really fast that heroes are meant to be disposable and that the entire game functions with this in mind. The negative quirks, the huge crits, the fast ramping negativity, the random obstacles at every corridor.

In Fire Emblem or Xcom, when I take bad hits back to back and lose a guy, I save scum, even if I have to redo another two hours of play cause characters in those games are vital. Vital to the team, vital to the story, vital to the upgrades they can use. Darkest Dungeon combined with its copy pasta dungeons and bosses just reeks of repetition for repetition's sake.

It's a fun game with depth, but it gets really, really mundane by hour 15.
6/10 - A fun and interesting diversion with what it offers since there isn't anything like it out there.

I wouldn't call stacking buffs and hoping the RNG doesn't fuck you anyway "knowing how to scout properly

It's regrettable just how viable spamming bodies in Darkest Dungeon is.

As you describe, similar games with combat RNG often are save-scummed a lot because otherwise you just straight up lose your campaign a lot of the time.

I always felt this was a strength of the original XCOM over the reboot. Characters had far less identity of course, but while developing and equipping them was important, you wouldn't lose the entire game even if mind control hits the right guy and he drops a blaster bomb in the skyranger before anybody even steps foot off the fucking thing.

So in that regard I appreciate that Darkest Dungeon hit a point(and provides a system) in which save scumming isn't missed.
But with the pure identity and design of each character makes me feel like they could've made each character a little bit more important. For the same reason I feel that having duplicates of the same class in missions feels really wrong, despite how strong it can be and how much the tedium of the game can force you to.

Darkest Dungeon nearly does everything perfectly. It falls in that it drags everything out too long and you start to see how bare some of the threads holding everything together are.

That's pretty neat but more suited to your older style dungeon crawlers. The walls in Darkest Dungeon aren't always man made so they would vary in that regard, but eventually what you see falls apart in my mind when I visualize the combat. Two or maybe three times more wide at the minimum, or else ranged units firing from behind would make little sense.

Also games like xcom don't tell you "lol sry wait for week 60 untill your first jester\grave robber\hellion" because rng fucks you even outside of dungeons.

The game is too rng. Even with risk minimization it's too random. Indie shit

because darkest dungeon isn't inspired by xcom\

it's inspired by Kantai Collection

I got it on Ps4 but I really disliked the controls, to the point where I bought the game again for PC just so I could play with a mouse. It's definately manageble and you'll probably get a good hang of it if you give it a chance. It's just painfully obvious that it's a port of a Indie PC game.
