No, it's just plain dumbed-down. Combo crafts/double S-crafts are removed in favor of the link system which is nothing more than a win harder mechanic. Support character abilities are changed to party swapping, removing a unique mechanic in favor of an easymode feature to let you cover fuckups and exploit the overbuffed power of S-crafts. Crafts all have at least three effects slapped on for no extra cost, when they were already balanced vs. arts in Ao, in fact, arts were a bit weak without high risk setups compared to crafts. The biggest offender was sepith count being removed entirely so now the system is just Materia with a fraction of the complexity, because casuals whined about having to look up spells.

The problem is that CS system requires no thought or weighing of options. You just slap on whatever R spell quartz you need, and stack stat bonuses (IE stack speed and STR). Quartz like Effort might as well not exist since they have no effect on combat. You equip it, cook, then unequip it. Same goes for Megalith; if you're not trying to make someone level faster you equip it, then swap it off once CP is at 200. Then there are ones like Scent, which in CS has no reason to be used since it provides nothing but high tier arts that you could get from other quartz that also buff stats.
In the rest of the games, nearly every quartz is useful in combat at some point, or at the very least could potentially be useful, due to the sepith count system. Scent is actually good because it provides a lot of different elements so if you're a few sepith away from casting a bunch of arts of a variety of elements, then Scent can let you cast all of those. Most non-combat/stat quartz have unique elemental combos, while most stat bonus quarts only give you one single element, making them useful in combat in a way that pure stat quartz aren't. Obviously there's optimal setups and such, but it at least has some thought put into it. There's also a huge advantage for single-line characters, rather than a huge disadvantage.

Have to agree action quartz was basically mandatory for everyone and action+cast was mandatory for all casters. It effectively cut your orbment customization in FC down to 5 at most 4 for casters with that numbers being 5-6 in SC/the 3rd.

Multiple lines in CS are only an advantage if you're a melee character because you can use it stack ailments. For casters like Emma, less lines are superior because it lets you cast more often thanks to the higher MP/EP/AP/whatever totals they have.

Time quartz are OP in every game in the series, in any turn-based game anything that boosts speed is going to be invaluable unless the speed stat is broken and does nothing (EG FF9).

And anyway, nothing in either of the other games comes close to CS and its literally killing every single thing in endgame in both of the games in one round by just S-crafting. You don't even really need buffs, just S-crafting. Doing that in previous games at least required some setup (1 HP + stealth with a melee to tank adds) beyond buff, S-craft, and the final boss of Ao punished that. Meanwhile everything in endgame CS2 folds to buff, S-craft. It's the only reason time quartz are slightly less underpowered in it; speed gets irrelevant later on because fights last one round.

Finished 3rd and will now put Kiseki on hold until Crossbell is out in its entirety. NISA, steal CS3 so that XSeed has no choice but to localize Crossbell next.
