Alright, so I don't get why some of the machines are kids and others adults. Do the kid machines eventually get a data upgrade or something and behave like adults, or are they just RPing as children? Do they get their data transferred to a bigger body when they're older? Are they purposefully underclocked or whatever to play their roles?

In what way? They're present in the resistance camp at the start of route A but only get introduced into the plot towards A's end. They primarily play a support role in route B and doing their side-quests sheds light on how they came to be in the game and reveals their motivations. Finally in the remaining routes they play an active role.

Nier players will obviously catch on earlier but they spend the whole game building these characters.
