Gameplay wise, the game is great. Design and story wise, it has problems. The main dungeons are terrible. I get they wanted to make it more about the shrines, but in doing so, they made the dungeons these insanely easy and repetitive 20 minute affairs that don't really challenge you. It feels like they took an idea for one cool dungeon and stretched it out into 4. They might has well have just taken them out entirely and tied story progression to several shrines instead.

Also, the champions needed more exposition/screentime. It's hard to really care about them when you see them for all of two minutes across two memory cutscenes and have them get mentioned in a handful of textboxes before getting to their dungeons. Revali was especially bad and the whole Rito area felt like they ran out of time and slapped it together in a week considering you go there and do one minigame and suddenly you're at the dungeon with little fanfare. Zelda was the only character that really felt fleshed out with the memories considering you get to see multiple sides to her and she's in most of them.

For me it was the huge open void of Hyrule Field. It seemed like they made the game bigger, but emptier. I remember seeing the trailer back in '06, and I was freaking out. That transition with the lantern in the dark spooky forest. But I remember getting it, and being disappointed. It never connected with me like all of the other Zeldas have. It was too edgy and dark, and (again) the world was empty. Kakariko Village was nothing, Lake Hylia was just big, Death Mountain lacked any of the fun from the previous entries with the Gorons, and you couldn'y explore Zora's Domain. It was all around a bad game in my opinion. Good soundtrack though

I'm not claiming that. I think OOT is third, MM is second, and BOTW is first. And that they're the ONLY 3D Zeldas worth a shit.

MM took OOT, made improvements, and deviated in key areas like the masks, time limit, and focus on the intricate overworld and sidequest system, instead of turning link into a wold or handing him a fucking sailboat. Dungeons were second to the concepts introduced in Majoras Mask.
The context that MM exists makes the 3 clones even more awful because theres no real REASON they needed to tread so close to OOTs footsteps.

BOTW is the current best. Finally playing not Ocarina of Time for the first time in over a decade was indescribably refreshing. Emergent gameplay went from meme to supreme in one game release. The sheer fucking variety of ways to approach situations from combat to just getting from A to B is impressive. Shrines (excluding combat and those weird marble mazes, a tiny percent of the 120) are literally the best reward for exploration I've seen in an open world game. The divine beasts beat out the find item->use item puzzle formula.
