The more I play this game the more I see it's really not what it's cracked up to be at all. Once you get past the memes the script writing even comes off as kind of juvenile but I get the sense that's the sort of thing it's core target audience likes. Even the supposedly super strong parts of the story are just more functional than anything cause it finally gets around to actually tackling it's premise and themes a little bit more directly but again in a kind of simplistic manner. Once you're level is on par with the enemies too and you get chips like auto-use item deadly heal and melee defense +6 the combat also becomes pretty brainless because as long as you don't run out of items and can't get one shot you're golden.

Basically anything beyond Route B (which is supposed to give you a new perspective but the writing and dialogue is no less shallow than it is in the first playthrough with 2B) is at least claimed by the games more hardcore fans to be the stuff of masterpiece writing, but I'd swear that's a comparative and low standards thing. Really it's more like "okay here's what's really been going on the whole time" which if you're even remotely familiar with the guy writing it or really sci-fi conventions or even just kind of paying attention to things happening in the game in general isn't going to be particularly surprising.

I love how even the supposedly emotional parts of the game just kind of end up feeling cold and empty because the characters just aren't particularly likeable or nuanced and because the sensibility of the dialogue and how it's written seems to hit all ends of the spectrum from passable to ""holy crap this is so goddamn bad I actually find myself wanting to skip this scene" and what you see and hear is really what you get when it's time to give it to you. The guy even does that repeat the line over and over thing that all shitty otaku writers that get popular with otaku types on social media do at several points in the game because they know their target audience is fucking retarded and makes memes out of stuff when you do that which is likely one of the reasons that whole "This cannot Continue" meme got started. It happens again with the Opera Diva boss when you kill it with 9S in his route and I'm just like "really dude, that lazy with the dialogue". I assume it's far from the last time I'll see that trope pop up either.

IMO the lore writing and overall theme and story structure for the game is fine, the dialogue just flat out kills a lot of moments of it though by being far too juvenile for the kind of themes being tackled. It's like I've seen these themes before and tackled far better by much much savvier and learned writers.

40 hours long with a shit ton of padding via backtracking and side quests that's no better than Square's other big recently released open world PS4 RPG FFXV is with it honestly. I feel like if the game had just been consolidated into one route with shifting perspectives as necessary and you remove a good chunk of the redundant sidequests and just keep fast travel unlocked past the first playthrough and the games probably possible to finish in 15-20 hours. I feel like the checklist is bigger than that. Even some of the visual cues in the game and as I've mentioned the dialogue cues feel like they're aping a lot from currently popular social media image trends in anime otakudom that a lot of anime abuse the crap out of new to try to draw attention and get fan art circles going. This game REALLY knew it's target audience unlike past entries in the franchise and unlike those ones it had a robust apparatus in modern social media and trends to actually be more successful for a change. I severely doubt it's level of market penetration beyond the hardcore otaku though.

To me the most obviously pandering characters are Adam and Eve though. Aside from arguably having the worst dialogue in the game there's very little reason they had to be naked glasses wearing fujoshi wet dreams in order to understand the human condition better or whatever it is that was supposed to be there thing.

The thing is the kind of things Taro Yoko does have actually been worked to death since Drakengard 1 and become more popular and trendy recently. At least you openly admit your standard isn't super high for the game and aren't trying to do the whole Masterpiece writer thing for a guy that literally just writes like your average trendy light novel author. I really feel like just about anybody could ghostwrite for Taro Yoko who I swear is more of a concept than an individual at this point and maybe they even do already but as long as you get him to go on social media and be weird and put his name on the box his fanbase will attribute it to him and call it master craft writing that only he could manage.

Well I mean they're going to be doing a route A playthrough at AGDQ this year and I can certainly imagine that being a slog even if it only takes a few hours. I mean there's really not a whole lot of meat to the first play through so I guess people will get to enjoy 33% of the run being backtracking dashing and the same memes everybody already knows already. I picture it being Undertale level bad in terms of the audience having to act out every single known meme attached to the game as it's happening in real time.

There's something to say about a game that eventually give you ample shortcuts, 3 playthroughs and perspectives and a good 80 or sidequests, weapon stories and hacking mini games and still somehow feels heavily and noticeably padded. If people didn't have a robot ass meme to stare at sometimes I bet they'd be bitching just as hard about the padding in this game as they did for FFXV which IMO somehow has better dialogue and writing despite the banter between the boys of Lucis being pretty damn cringey at times.

Considering so many people really seem to think that Taro Yoko designed 2B though who knows.

Also when it comes to pixiv artists and that, literally they just follow whatever the clear cut emerging trend is or what they're commissioned to draw. There's absolutely no reason to assume they've even played any of the stuff they've mentioned. Mash-ups usually happen not because things are related or the artist is interested in those things but because pixiv artists are mashing up the current popular trending tags in their artwork.

Really though in the flavor of the season pixiv era all you need to have a successful work with otaku types is to have your tag go viral as a trend and let the otaku take care of the rest. That's how stuff sometimes goes from virtually no profile and nobody giving a shit to overnight sensation like Kemono Friends or likewise goes from a bestseller hit to mediocre sales within a single iteration once the trend dies out like your average fujoshi bait thing. That's also why there's a bit of incentive to have quick turnarounds in content for some of this stuff to avoid letting the trend die out too fast or something else to come in and take it's place in the interim.

Anyway I'm glad there's people here that realize how shallow some of this shit really is in the long run. It's crystal clear this games honeymoon period is long since over. It really makes you wonder where the Nier/DoD franchise will be a couple years from now as the trends shift and die down and it's no longer the current flavor. What I love is they clearly don't actually hold the guy to any sort of standard at all despite what they'll claim. At the very least this game is much better than D3 which was truly godawful and the main reason I didn't even want to bother with this game to start despite a friend telling me how much he liked the original Nier and that I should try it. It really is his sense of dialogue writing that sunk D3 the hardest for me and sinks certain cutscenes in this game. It can really be astonishingly bad, juvenile and fan fiction tier at times. I can't even imagine Square Enix RPG's with some guy who has a limited framework of themes and ideas mostly surrounding whether or not the player is like a murderer in killing hundreds of enemies in a game that he's been doing for the past 15 years now. Like people really seem to be unaware that the kind of stuff he writes about and his actual overall level of writing and prose isn't nearly broad enough in scope to be applicable to anything other than niche games in his own franchises that he and a couple of others come up with from scratch. He should literally never be allowed to touch anything beyond his own creations IMO cause the average non-otaku fanboy would balk at it.

For me it's the fact that they all seem to have the exact same verbatim positions on these games and all claim the exact same shit about them and what they've been doing with their time in comparison to other games. It looks way to much like people just claiming to have the most popular and often states positions on things as per usual with otaku meme stuff. Go on any anime forum full of weebs and you'll often see people all have essentially the exact same comments and insights into things which usually just involve recognizing some sort of meme. A good example with this game is how the vast majority of people's commentary is about Ending E, 2B's ass and the sountrack. It's literally just people looking at what other people are saying and parroting it so they look like they fit in with what's trendy.

Well games that feature nice and unique character designs usually will always have secondaries plaguing it. See Touhou for example (Well maybe a bad example since Touhou fans usually produce a lot of good shit). Would be kinda stupid for these secondaries to praise a games writing when they never played, I never encountered anyone that would actually do something like that which feels just absurd. But on the other hand theres the /vg/ general which is full of fanart and fanfiction posting.

I do like the entire package Nuer Auto.ata comes with, the gameplaye is pretty weak mainly attributed to shit balance but the entire package Nier:Automata delivered made me really enjoy it. I think Route C was the single thing that made the initial time investment worth it along with the great usage of the OST which wrapped it up very nicely. As for the philosophical them I never understood why people are so focused on them since its clear thst the game focuses on the characters, mainly about 9S, the themes are nothing more than to build the characters and show their struggle but arent really the central point of Nier: Automata.

Well I mean just the fact that for once people finally seem to get it in a conversation has me wanting to talk about it in a lot of detail is the thing because I'm just so used to fucking parrots and people screaming at me for not cocksucking the game and Taro Yoko that in comparison anything else feels like the most interesting conversation ever.

In general though I find the Nier fanbase had been volunteering it's opinions onto things which meant all bets were off. Having to apparently justify my appreciation for games that aren't Nier any time I went to talk about them for a while and people expecting me to entertain their notion that the game was the single greatest game of all time and that Taro Yoko should be hailed as some god of scenario writing despite the unevenness of what he put out for this game (which people even own up to now more in saying you need to play through to the 3rd route to "get to the good stuff") got pretty old and I doubt I'm the only one that was waiting for the memes to die down so I could talk a little more seriously about this game and other JRPG's that came out around the same time with people again.

Also again my experience for the longest time had been you're not allowed to say anything remotely critical about this game otherwise shitposters would come out and scream at you so not really sure where you've been this whole time.

I didnt actually give a shit about the neta narrative and just saw it as Pod 042 overcomning his programming to save 9S and 2B. And it becomes even better when you read up that Pod 042 is based on Zinnias Personality. By the end of the day I was happy that I managed to save 2B and 9S to give them a chance free of war and free of suffering.

I legitimately no nothing about Touhou other than it's a series of one man show doujin shooters that seems to get more fanart than literally anything else ever in existence even to this day. I can't even imagine how rich that ZUN guy would probably be had he ever decided to sell out to a big publisher and have that franchise monetized and merchandised but instead he's kept it entirely localized to just his small doujin circles control and it's still that popular with fan artists despite being around for 20 years now. I say this because pretty much every popular creator in Japan going back to Hideakki Anno essentially started as a doujin circle before doing that one work that hit it big and made them into a cultural phenomenon. For Anno and the Daikon V people it was Evangelion, for Taro Yoko it was Nier Automata, for Type/Moon it was Fate/Stay Night etc.

I finished it a while ago. I liked the story and characters 9S' mental breakdown during Route C was pretty great, the music was 10/10, and I liked how putting different weapon types in each slot changed your combos (Sword+Spear is different to Spear+Sword, for example.).

The only problems I have with this game are that the enemies aren't agile or defensive enough, combat is easily broken thanks to Auto-Heal and Deadly Healing, there isn't enough incentive to do combos and not just button mash, And I wanted to see Adam react to the revelation that humanity was dead all along.

I didn't bother farming Pure Waters for a while, but there's a chip available quite a while into the game, that lets you auto-pick up items. What I did was just run through the Flooded City, picked up the items drops, use the transporter to go somewhere else, go back to the Flooded City to reload the item spawns, and then repeated the process.
