Too much bad anime, not enough good dungeon crawling. The writing in Star Ocean has always been fucking terrible, but the story to gameplay ratio has been shrinking over time. And while having real time combat was neat back in the day, their battle systems never really kept up with what Action RPGs and even the Tales games were doing by the time SO3 came out.

Could write an essay about why it's bad honestly. There's so many things wrong with it and bad design decisions and just lack of polish and effort. It was very under budget and there's only a handful of areas you revisit constantly. Combat system is a failure, bad camera, clusterfuck battles, bad skills(and lack of them) and damage formulas, tedious PAs. It just goes on and on.

The name somehow still carries some weight. Its easy to forget how this spent some time as the #2 RPG series behind Final Fantasy in the West (Unless you're counting Kingdom Hearts).

Til the End of Time is a horrible game but its in the top 100 sellers of PS2 games, which really doesn't include a lot of RPGs (and Dragonquest games are on the list solely because of it being gangbusters in Japan, Til the End of Time outsold VIII by 200,000 copies up in MURRICA).

Anyone care to explain why SO5 is shit on? I really enjoyed it. Reminded me closely of SO1, but good. My big complaint would be that some/most of the environments you're forced to run through (multiple times at that) are far to large for their own good.
