Depends on your CPU and power supply.

1060 6GB or RX 580 for 1080p now

1070 for 1440p now or 1080p long-term

1080 and higher for memes

RX 470/570 for like 150$ if you live in the US. For the money you can't beat it and you could buy vidjas for the rest of the money.
If you play on 1440p I would wait for vega instead of buying an 1070 now because either Vega is going to be a lot better for the price or atleast force nvidia to lower the prices of their 1070. Vega is only 1 month away.

This is pretty good advice, I live in Mexico where spending 250 dollars on a computer component is a big deal and a huge luxury so I've pretty much been stuck with a 760 out of necessity. It still runs the games I play and besides shitty chink ports it runs them better than the PS4 stock does.
That whole max settings with no frame drops mentality is some autistic meme that came from /r/pcmasterrace and 15 year olds who got into PC gaming when they were still optimizing games around ancient lastgen systems. Now that games are actually being made to use our hardware again gasp, you can't reliably max everything out on a mid tier card anymore. But what fucking ever, if the game runs and looks nice then it's fine.
I have an underage burger friend who wants to buy a 4k monitor and whatever nVidia's best card will be at the time because of that whole American"best of the best" mentality even though there is no way his household could afford that shit and god damn he pisses me off.

Get a 6GB 1060 if you don't want to drop megabux.

It'll nail everything on ultra @ 1080, and do well enough on anything higher - but wont you'll not be maxing.

I went 6gb 1060 to tide me over til I do a proper big upgrade. I still do everything at 1080, so its perfect for the job atm.

I'm still running a single GTX 560ti 1gb, and running EVERYTHING at 1920x1200. Only Witcher 3 and RE7 have really made me set more than a couple settings to Low to get good performance.
