I'd call it a mix of Joust (the 2D perspective and flying/swimming), Melee (the simplified fightan movesets and skill-based mechanics), Team Fortress (the team-based gameplay with stats), and Armored Core (the customization).

There's no way around it but to grapple, dismantle and cannibalize them one by one, aggroing them by moving into their line of sight. You might be able to regain some HP from their corpses.

Another good tip is to hit their critical point on the underside by swimming under them.
That should do a lot of damage, since their entire cellular structure is so basic. Otherwise you'll be there all week since they're literally damage sponges.

People hang shit on defense-oriented amphipods a lot, but they don't seem to realize that the true skill in playing a tank shrimp is in managing weak points/hitting enemy weak points/traditional fightan combos.

Since your weak points are larger to offset your HP advantage, enemies have the ability to hit your weak point for massive damage. If you don't turn at the perfect instant when they swoop in for a hit on you, you're fucked.
