My theory is that the "challenge" meme is used to reinforce male disposability. Ever notice that no one ever tells *women* they're supposed to want a "challenge" instead of being free to enjoy easy sex/romance? Not only that, it's considered perfectly okay for them to just sit around and wait for a guy to come to them, which is even easier than actively going for an "easy" guy. No one criticizes women for wanting things to be easy.

On the other hand, if you convince men that sex and romance are supposed to be a challenge or something to be "earned", you can use that to make them devalue their own sexuality and become good little disposable worker drones.
