They are very docile, especially considering that even non-captive ones are very friendly to humans and the like. Which is also why hardly any wild ones exceed 4 years lifespan due to being so easily hunted down by man and predators alike.

Well rodents in general make good pets. Fairly low-maintenance and still pretty fun animals. Lots of people hate rats, but they make great pets. They're social animals, they keep themselves clean, and they're pretty intelligent.
