Hopefully they won't just leave behind the other games however, but it makes sense that they are just porting Disgaea 5 now because it could be easier to port to PC due to already being on hardware that's like a PC. Disgaea 1 has a great story but the worst gameplay due to it being so outdated.
All the games after have had improvements to the system, so 5 ends up with so many improvements it's hard to go back to the first few.
I'd recommend you to just pirate 5 to see if you prefer the gameplay in that game and then get that if you like it more.

Mechanically, it's the best by far. The story doesn't live up to D1, but it's one of the better ones in the series, with there at least being a clear villain from beginning to end, no chapters that just feel like dumb filler, and no characters that just sit on the sidelines and contribute nothing. Only problem is that there isn't much Post Game content beyond grinding your stats, but you do have a ton of shit you can do as far as that goes. The DLC strategy was also Maximum Jew, but the Switch version sidesteps that ugliness entirely.

I think they're going to pull an IFI and sit on it until after D3 and D4 come to PC. Wouldn't make much sense to release D1, then D2, then D5, then go back and do D3 then D4.
Much easier to rate your game for both at the same time, then just release it whenever you get around to it. IFI had Nep Rebirth 1 rated about a year or 18 months before they even announced the PC version.
