Insanely large world that felt lived in and decisions that allowed players to radically effect the narrative of each quest. It's absolutely true that to really understand a game you HAVE to play it. Even walking simulators take on a new dimension when you play them, instead of watching them. BotW's shrine quests are much, much better from a gameplay perspective.
