Tim Follin is incredible, but he's not in the same stylistic ballpark. It feels wrong to compare them against each other. Uematsu's stuff is more orchestral and emotionally evocative, whereas Follin's work is more immediate, off-the-wall, and plays with technical complexity both in terms of theory and hardware.

If Uematsu is a classical composer, Follin is a prog rocker.

Bad? When did this become about him being bad? All I said was that it's not as if every single soundtrack he's ever been responsible for has been solid gold. Chrono Trigger and Cross are gold, Tsugunai: Atonement is gold. Stella Glow and Valkyria Revolution? Eh, not so notable. His involvement with Xenoblade 2 isn't a bad thing by any means, but ACE+ and Manami Kiyota are almost solely responsible for the music that cemented the first game as a modern classic. Mitsuda composed one song for that game- the ending theme, which is basically that game's I Am the Wind; it's well-made, but really cheesy and doesn't exactly fit in.

CC is a better example of Mitsuda using NP in his element.

Fitting for a game that's also barely functional as a sum of its parts.

you're right on that with xenoblade 1, but he clearly has a far bigger role in 2 and based on his updates its shaping up to be one of his best projects. Also can't forget his involvment in xenogears/saga, stellar OSTs within the series

Has Mitsuda ever done big orchestration of his works? He seemed really touched to hear an entire orchestra play his music.
