The first game is very mediocre, but incredibly pretty for a GBC game. Risky's Revenge has nothing going for it. Pirate's Curse is actually a decent game. Haven't played HGH but from what I hear there's no real reason to.

It's got elements of Metroidvanias and Zelda games, without really being as good as either. As the series went along, the platforming got better and the exploration got worse. Unfortunately, HGH's platforming isn't as fun as PC's, so that one's just a straight downgrade.

I think the original is still my favorite. I really liked finding distinct towns, and having an open world (even if it's just a big loop) with a day night cycle, and a lot of the areas were fun and creative. As the series went along, the opted for just a level-select, and the environments weren't as fun, or were just rehashed from the original.

The original game is a bit too slow paced and had the most awkward dance system, but it has the best difficulty level and is very impressive for a GBC game. Risky's Revenge does some neat things with layers and streamlines the dancing but is too short and has very little in the way of memorable areas or moments. Pirate's Curse is the best game in the series. It's got the best writing, the best level design, and the shift away from transformations and towards abilities that can be used in quick succession greatly improved the gameplay. It's a bit too easy though. Half Genie Hero looks great and has solid level design but the transformations put the gameplay back a step and the game is way too easy overall.

I discovered Shantae from some YT video and bought the first game on eshop. Enjoyed it and got pirates curse. Enjoyed it and found A LOT OF PORN of Shantae/Rottytops/Risky/Sky.
Then bought half genie hero on steam because I like Shantae

Honestly I only really liked Pirate's Curse. The first was pure suffering, the second and the fourth was short and meh.

Solid metroidvania style platformers, has highs and lows but is generally pretty fun all around.

The humour is good for a chuckle, acknowledges the outlandish looks of the characters but keeps it clean.

Throws out a decent amount of lore to sink your teeth into.

Every game feels like it has something new to offer, although Pirates Curse definitely steals the show.

and then all around the controls are usually pretty tight, the bosses are pretty fun, it's really just endgame that i find Shantae falls flat.
