Neichus took on Icefrog as lead scripter/codeveloper, then when Neichus quit (after like six months) Icefrog became the sole developer

Icefrog was then hired by Valve, signed over "any and all rights" to the game, and apparently that means Valve owns the dota trademark now. Even though back when Icefrog first took over, you could still just make your own DotA map to compete with Allstars.

They do own the engine and the source code for DOTA 2 (well technically IceFrog owns it, but didn't valve buy them out a few years ago?, or at the very least has an exclusivity contract with them)

Basically to reinforce the idea that they (through IceFrog) always have and always will hold the rights to anything and everything MOBA, so if another one springs up and actually threatens DOTA's marketshare (aside from League and HoTS, which have already won cases from Valve trying to squash them out) they can claim "legal precedent" and destroy the company/game before it can ever make a dime

A) China has never had a significant loss against any other company pulling something similar. it's why knockoffs of virtually everything are so easy to find, even at a mass manufactured and marketed level. B) The case really has no grounds outside of a trademark dispute. I don't know, Valve is handling the tournaments greatly for themselves. Few majors a year plus a TI. Thats millions of dollars earned every year. But they also lost a lot of people's interest in the game by having so many million dollar tournaments. They are also struggling to attract a new player base as this years unique count is lower than last years.

CSGO, LoL, and a ton of other esport games seems to be doing much better in the viewer count.
