Grandia is good, but it's pure nostalgiafagging to say any of the classics are the best. The truth is that JRPGs have improved in virtually every area since then, and there is always a game that does something better. One example is in the quality of written dialogue and translations, which tend to be better than in the classics.

With that said, Grandia was still a great game that I highly recommend. Lunar as well.

I never cared for the Grandia series, though I did enjoy the combat system.

I hated every Grandia charcter, except Tio & maybe Liete.

>>
>>377764813
It's not like using Gust, Compile Heart, Nippon Ichi, Bamco, or Square would be any better. Which was probably the point. The most modern jrpgs are hot garbage and it's not just nostalgia faggotry to say that many of the best genre entries are still older titles (even if there is still a ton of nostalgia faggotry in the jrpg fanbase).
>>
>>377763591
That slow piece of shit isn't even the best of its own series.
>>
>>377765063
Yes it is nostalgiafaggotry, and your insistence on idea factory proves that you only want to point to the lowest quality stuff to represent modern games because the best stuff (like Falcom) can easily meet or excees the classics
>>
>>377763591

>All those PlayOnline tags in the game.

What were they thinking?
>>
>Play Grandia when I was younger
>Get to the point where you're on the ship with the green haired girl
>Hear my name
>Really confused
>Realize that the game has voice acting, and my name was the same as the localized name of the main character
>Game immediately became my favorite game because the characters were saying my name and it was my first experience with real VO in games

Regardless, Grandia's great, Grandia 2 is also good but in my opinion it wasn't as good. I never played Grandia 3, how was it?
>>
Grandia 1 is one of the best PS1 JRPGs, one of the best JRPGs ever.

Love that skill system where getting a new ability feels like you've put so much work and effort into it.

And the battle system that tried, successfully, to make the player use space to his advantage, like Lunar but better.

Also allowing for spells to be canceled to allow for a little bit more depth to combat

The characters and story were charming and memorable, and the whole thing had a strong feeling of actually being on an adventure, especially when you reach the new world. The character growth for Justin was some of the most amazing in any game, where he goes from annoying kid to a cool hero.

Only problem is the lack of challenge, which is par the course for JRPGs but it was more disappointing in this one because of the great battle system that seemed like it would lend itself to some tougher end-game or secret challenges.

Also
>have a normalfag friend who plays nothing but sports games
>he sees this in my room and somehow gets interested in it and borrows it
>he plays it solidly through to the end, with a stronger party than I had
>talk about it for years after
Maybe it was because of the picture of Feena.

Also
>dat heartwarming ending

What a game

I'm not even the original guy. I'm just taking a shot on what point he was making. If any. 1 good modern game for every 20 shitty games doesn't change the fact that while some of the best games are indeed modern, and the best possible modern ones do raise the bar, plenty of the best ones are also still older. You're just flailing around because you don't want it to be true.

>>
>>377765549
Cold Steel isn't the greatest thing ever but it's far from being garbage. The battle system is one of the best, and the world/setting (beyond the generic high school stuff, which is gone by no.2 but which they seem to want to bring back for 3 annoyingly) has loads of depth and detail.

The last 10 years have been pretty good for JRPGs really, especially considering Atlus games and Falcolm localisations.
>>
>>377765820
>>377765827
What really? Huh. I just assumed it was one of those early localization changes where they changed the name because the Japanese one was too hard to pronounce or some shit.

For sure, was a damn good game. BoF3 still holds a special spot in my heart though.

Watched my brother play from the start to when you get Nina in one sitting before we owned a Memory Card for the PS1, so we couldn't save. Was the second RPG we took seriously (with Phantasy Star 3 being the first).
>>
>>377766194
I liked the gameplay and overall atmosphere, but the story was short and left a lot to be desired. It's not better than the first Breath of Firr, but it's certainly #2. BoF2 and 3 suffer from too many irrelevant sidequests and fetch quests that hurt the overall experience
>>
>>377766337
III and IV are so much better, you really should try them. I was capcom trying to catch the jrpg hype in Japan during the mid 90's and II is interesting and definitely more unique and interesting but has some really bad balance problems. III and IV are phenomenal games, play them. IV is one of my all time favorite games in general and has maybe the best turn based combat I have ever found in a jrpg.

>>377766812
The original is definitely the best. The story flows more smoothly and it doesn't feel like the majority of the game is a side show like in BoF2.

Generally I was hugely disappointed by 2 because it feels like 99% of the game is irrelevant to the interesting main plot, and 3 because it is riddled with fetch quests and irrelevant sidequests that aren't integrated into the main story very well.

BoF1 doesn't have that problem. It has a story to tell and it tells it without all the distraction.

Still, BoF2 had some very interesting parts and the main story of BoF3 might be the best overall. It's just hard to put them above the original because of their glaring flaws
>>
>>377766720
The first two Lunars are also pretty good examples of ADVENTURE too.

Hell in Lunar 1 you start off with a team where you drag your fat friend from childhood with you until shit gets too real, along with the childhood girl friend who wants to play with the boys. It's pretty much childhood: the game. Just like how Grandia 1 starts.

And in Lunar 2 Hiro is an actual explorer of ruins who just gets caught up in shit because he wants dat ass.
>>
>>377766883
I enjoyed my time playing 4 probably more than I did 2 and 3, but I felt like the story didn't really reach its potential. It felt too short and anti-climatic, but then again it's been years since I played it

For me It's hard to say. IV is the best but things get kind of mixed up after that. BoF1 has a nice focus but is the most simple and "plain". Personally I feel it was a little too safe. BoFII has a lot of interesting things but the execution is very flawed. The shaman system, story, and puzzles on the overworld definitely show that capcom was trying to give BoF a real identity but the balance is just terrible. I feel if it had more playtesting it would be phenomenal. BoFIII has a nice story and better balance but it can be a real slog to play through. It moves at a snail's pace for the first half with little happening. The time skip is better but that's a fair way into the game.
>>377767340
There was some minigames like the sand surfer and the jobs you can do. Also you had the masters and the ability to collect enemy skills. Fishing is also pretty deep, I hear some say BoFIII and IV has better fishing then most fishing games.

I got it mostly because I'm kinda in to Micro Cabin games. And I have a 3DO, lol.

Grandia is not the best JRPG ever made, but it's in the top 10 easily.

The main thing that holds it back above all minor flaws is the pacing. It's not just long, it's really fucking dense, and the story progression goes from drip-fed to floodgate and back without any consistency.

It is the single best JRPG for experiencing a full-fledged "adventure", from innocence to experience. Gameplay was unforgiving as shit too, really had to know what you were doing.

Try the final fantasy legends games. These are are actually SaGa games but given the FF brand name in the US to help increase sales. This is how most people start the franchise. /vr/ has a VERY dedicated general for this series, ask around there as those guys probably can help more then I can.

Also it's a acquired taste but breath of fire 5 is seen as a pretty tough game. Often players quit due to how punishing the game can be. It's like a jrpg/survival horror hybrid. Most don't like it but it certainty is unique and interesting.

Elena was OP as shit. I set her up so that she had item proficiency x 2 & recovery, and have her used the staffs that had free magic cast when used as items. She has naturally high magic power so it was a great combo. When she wasn't doing that, she was stunlocking everything on screen with her mastered nightmare bell. She just carried 100% of the game by herself whenever she was playable.
>>
>>377771972
Comparing to barely functional emulators is pointless. No one cares how good an emulator is relative to the other ones, they care about whether or not they can play a game. And that anon is going to open up Grandia in SSF and see graphical glitching all over the place and then kick himself for believing you.
>>
>>377770463
Will never understand what people see in this game other than maybe because it came out at a time when home console JRPGs were very scarce and so people grabbed onto whatever they could.

Also it seemed like people latched onto this game as a counterpoint to FF13, so it gets praise because it was traditional whereas FF13 threw out conventions that fans of the genre value a lot like explorations, towns, simple adventures, and so on.

Other than that, it's hard to see why people would think it's a good game, let alone one of the best. Dull, slow combat with no tactics or thought required, generic story with mostly personality-less characters. The MC has character but only because it's painstakingly built up by the short stories littered throughout the game (incidentally written by an award winning author, who clearly did not write the main scenario). The combat is actually broken because of the res mechanic, too.

Am I missing something with this game?

Pretty much any character could be op as shit if you set them up right. My favorite is stacking Tio with counter and evade. You could win battles by just defending and waiting for the counters.

That's my main complaint with Grandia 2 battle wise. Once you get one or two characters leveled up enough that you have their insta-cancels, the game is almost impossible to lose. With the latest PC port on hard mode, this happens around where you fight the Eye I mean, the tongue is trivial too, but I think it's supposed to be Spellbinding Eye is such a joke that the final boss didn't get a single attack off on me. It's so fucking broken.

If they had added the requirement to run up to the enemy for melee skill like the first Grandia, and then the juggle mechanics from the 3rd, 2 would have been a lot better.

During fifth gen games as a whole became less whimsical. In terms of jrpgs look at the most popular one of that era, FFVII. It was grim and dealt with themes of death, animal experimentation, and abuse. Games wanted to tell more deeper stories and naturally more and more developers took this route as things like FFVII, MGS, and SH proved these more mature stories and characters did sell. The audience for games has become much older then what it used to be. People in their 20's and 30's weren't as thought about by most developers then.

For me I appreciate both sides. Sometimes I do want a more whimsical, just feel good plot. Other times I do want to be interested in what happens next and become curious of character's motives and such.

Few agree with me on this, but while more of the best JRPGs are on PS1, PS2 was the true golden era for JRPGs.

In PS1 a lot of titles still felt experimental, while some hit gold. In PS2, we saw the genre mature, expand, and really blow out a ton of great experiences. Just look at the sheer diversity of titles of that time

>Final Fantasy X/XI/XII
>Dragon Quest VIII
>Kingdom Hearts
>Random Growlansers
>Disgaea + other N1 games
>Mana Khemias
>Suikoden 3/4/5
>Wild Arms 3/4/5
>Xenosaga 1/2/3

>Random Ateliers
>Random Tales
>Random Ar Tonelico
>Star Ocean III
>Rogue Galaxy
>Dark Clouds
>Breath of Fire Dragon Quarter
>dotHack
>A random Legaia
>Radiata Stories
>Shadow Hearts

You have the whole gamit of space fantasy to medieval fantasy to magic schools to modern real-world with magic

And these weren't just churn. Many of these were good if not great.

But there were too many and it all fell apart and the PS3 was fuck awful

Hello.
>>
>>377765468
The combat was weighed down with too much over embellishment and flare, and as good as the skill learning system was it was crippled by how combursome it was to check how close you were to earning that next move because of how poorly stats are displayed during a level up.
The fact that the characters are randomly thrown out of the party sucks even more when you put so much work into building their skills, which discourages you from even caring about developing the new characters that come in.

and that's just the battle system problems. I could make a thread about what an unholy combo the game's camera and dungeon design was.

This was the worst RPG I played on the playstation.

I think it more or less demonstrates that Konami were the masters of their craft in the PS1 era.

The geniuses working there must have thought "what makes a SRPG boring? slogging through samey maps over and over again" The solution? Make every map its own special thing, often with its own gimmicks and interactivity.

It's an exercise in level design cruelty.

Tell that to Ys VIII. Sen I & II were rushed, and Tokyo Xanadu was recycled to hell and back, but Falcom is great as long as they don't bite off more than they can or should chew (and this was true back in the day). VIII does a lot to make the party system more attractive to old-school fans, starting with item/money restrictions, better skills and platforming, much needed increases in challenge from Seven, etc. I've heard really good impressions, enough to make it worth an import.

Sen III should also be a big improvement, assuming it concludes the plot in Erebonia.

>>377773392
Mednafen's Saturn core seems perfect for this, other than no options to up resolution. I really need to savor my run of Shining Force III once I'm ready.

Nah. Funny enough, Working Designs initially wanted to translate the Saturn version, but Sega of America didn't let them since they didn't think a game like Lunar had any market potential in the US.

The irony here? Lunar 1 Complete ended up being Working Designs' best selling title with over 500,000 sold.

>>
>>377778768
Probably Chrono Trigger, it's a really good game, but not nearly as perfect or amazing as everyone makes it out to be. It plays everything really safe, doesn't really innovate in any way, and just kind of polishes what other RPGs have already done at the time.
>>
>>377778768
In terms of praise given vs. praise deserved? Probably Legend of Dragoon.

Overrated doesn't necessarily mean bad. In this case it does.

Good thing he posted Sky, not Cold Steel.

>>377771554
Quest 64 is eons more vanilla, and that's just one example.

>>377775126
Encounter frequency in Legends is bearable for the first half and suddenly great once you equip White Map on Vyse. It's really not as big a problem as others make it out to be, unless you're playing on Dreamcast. Battle system's almost redeemed by the more creative Bounty fights, but it's not central for a reason (I really like the final boss though). Lots of fun to be had in this game, even with lore.

>>
>>377779826
Akalabath predates Ultima and Wizardry. There were numerous other rpgs before Ultima and Wizardry, although not all were party-based. The first dungeon crawler was the original roguelike, which was, well, Rogue, obviously. There was a Wizardry beta before Ultima, but Ultima predates the full version of Wizardry 1.

FF Tactics. Seemed so dull at the time and still today compared to others of the same genre.

But with this kind of thing there's no point in getting mad about it. With JRPGs, where there's more emphasis on side-elements like story, characters, music, overall feeling the game gives you, it's always going to be super subjective in a way which games that are more solely focused on gameplay aren't; that is, a good FPS or RTS is more likely to have a consensus about how good it is as compared to a JRPG where you'll always get a huge load of detractors even if the game is otherwise super popular just because, for them, the more subjective elements didn't work.

Suikoden 2 is easily one of the better JRPGs on the system and that's saying a lot considering PS1 was a genre powerhouse. It just got overshadowed by all the bigger names.

He is done with adventuring, that's the entire point. When he set out on his journey he was a naive little kid that wanted to see the world and have exciting things happen to him, but over the course of his adventure he grows, becomes a man, falls in love, saves the world, and is ultimately becomes able to appreciate the smaller things in life and just settle down to build a life for himself and Feena, a family.
