Nintendo saved it because it gave it focus on quality (Nintendo Quality Seal) instead of quantity like Atari, besides a more toy like approach to avoid the already damaged video-game image back then. That Nintendo iron grip with developers that saved the industry in the 80s and 90s also cause them to lose a lot of 3rd party support to the Playstation.
