Like, why have the Persona be summoned while you're selecting skills if the skill select menu takes up the entire screen?
Why drop the change persona list in favour of big status screens you have to switch through and wait to load? (In P3 and P4 when you go to change personas it gives you a small, unintrusive list of their names and you can press a button to view their status screens).
A lot of the animations and movements are blocked by huge screens, it's really weird.

For what it's worth, there actually IS another out: Stephen. Apparently humans have the potential to operate outside the Axiom's system if they use Observation well enough.

The problem is, this implicitly needs either amounts of levelgrinding absurd even by SMT standards considering Stephen has a higher level than YHVH, or a freak science experiment. Heck, even in the bonus fight it's all you and other protags can do to muster just enough Observation to put 1's Hero back together by fighting Stephen.

So basically Stephen is the Dr. Manhatten of SMT now, except he's trying to break out his fellow humans any way he can. That's why he admits to Dagda he doesn't oppose the Anarchy route, and also why Bonds has him tell you to go gank YHVH.

SMTfag here, desu I get where you're both coming from. In terms of narrative, I'd definitely say P5 does a much better job of consistency, gameplay-story integration and characterisation. Especially characterisation. I'll say it again-some of the key party members in A have such cliched, predictable, insufferably naive plot arcs they aggravated me into Anarchy end. Pretty much only Navarre and Gaston feel like actual characters instead of caricatures crudely motivated by whatever the plot needs them to do, and out of the rest only Toki has a solid excuse for being all over the place.

What hurts the most is P5 does adopt a few GOOD things about SMT (Yaldabaoth's boss fight borrows heavily from YHVH, for example) that it implements well.

I started with Persona games aswell then SMT, and I thought SMT4 had a really strong opening.
It does rely a little bit on having some knowledge of previous games to be at its most interesting I think.
If you're talking gameplay SMT3 and 4 are way more engaging and fun than any Persona game.
