ITT: Villains who did nothing wrong
>build an entire city on the concept of personal initiative and no government oversight holding back the alleged luminaries of society
>proceed to institute strict government oversight when said 'luminaries' start not obeying you exactly like you want them to
>>377754524
Idiot silver spoon faggot who forgot that the little people are what keep his society from crumbling, realizes oh no nobody wants to be at the bottom in society and a con man comes in and takes advantage of his naivety.
>>377755008
Now Mithos was right about everything.
In tales of phantasia there was a mana war over mana because Lloyd combined both worlds as he said.
>>377754524
would you kindlyDELETE THIS
>>377755173
not sure about the mana war in phantasia (i didn't know the two games had the same universe), but i agreed with mithos's aims of wanting to save his sister and create a new world.. the party just seemed like assholes trying to oppose him (in kratos's case for pure vengeance over his wife). overall the game was actually really well written, but i enjoyed mithos most of all.. the dialogue between kid mithos and genus was especially well written given that genus could have easily been his best friend had circumstances been different. holy fuck that game was so good
posting an obvious one
>>377755542
I originally played it when I was in high school on gamecube over 10 years ago and replayed it a few years ago on ps2 and I saw Mithos as right on humanity, discrimination, and a lot of what he did including trying to bring back the only person who cared about him.
Its funny to play it a second time and notice all the hidden stuff you didn't notice like how obvious it was that Zelos was a triple agent and how the party didn't notice mithos the kid was the villian all along as Mithos learned alot of stuff from just listening them run their mouths.
Give credit to Zelos as he tried to get them to shut up as he knew the truth but the party wrote him off as being an idiot.
His relationship with Genis was powerful because it showed Mithos as more than some mustache twirling faggot villain and more as a person.
Takes if Phantasia is over 4000 years after Symphonia so no returning characters but it has a lot of similarities, references mana war, one of your party members is a decedent of sheena, the spirits, Derris-Kharlan is there, The eternal sword is in this game, some other stuff but the final one is the tree Lloyd names which is Yggdrasil which Lloyd named it in respect to Mithos and Martel.
>>377756381
hmmm i have never finished phantasia, i always get to that part near the end where you have to do like 10,000 normal fights in a row to represent a war...
the only thing that would have made ToS better i think was a stronger main cast... Zelos/Rain/Genus/Kratos carried them, with lloyd and collette being basically just deadweight imo in that they had VERY little personality/interactions with the rest of the cast..
>>377755008
The only thing wrong he did was having his entire plan revolve around his sister and had no intention of ever trying to fix the problems that would have led to societies developing magitek outside of stunting their growth when they got too developed
Otherwise, he was pretty spot on and everything he feared that would have happened came to pass in Phantasia.
>>377754524
>''''''''''villain''''''''''
Fontaine was the villain. Ryan was just an idiot Randroid.
>>377756673
Collette is the stereotypical sacrificial lamb and once that arc is over she serves no real purpose. Lloyd from the beginning was set up to be Mitho's foil both in personality and action.
Heck Mitho's last words were saying goodbye to his Shadow.
>ryan hatew authoritarianism and builds an objectivist utopia with a top heavy social system that favors capitalism and free will
>endw up becoming an authoritarian and turns his utopia into a disaster when his dream society crumbles and he resorts to mind control to erase free will
pottery
Nothing wrong.
>>377756997
the old good tales MC was Abyss's. actually the whole cast of Abyss was pretty great... ToV had a horrible cast, but was redeemed by Raven and Judith because their backstories were well written/believable
>>377755542
>>377756381
>>377756673
If by "well written" you mean "stealing all of its major plot points from FFX" then sure.
All villains do something wrong.
They lose.
>>377757147
ffx has nothing to do with ToS...?
>>377755765
This, I'm glad he won in real life at least
>>377757238
All of its major plot points are lifted from FFX pretty much wholesale.

>muh discrimination
Even in 7th grade, I cringed at that shit. Great game, great character, etc. That last ten minutes of the plot where he harps on about it when he did the exact same thing in response with his human farms and shit kind of ruined it. It did make it feel really good to kick his ass, but it was hamfisted as hell.
Everything up until that point was great.
>>377757131
Hypocrites, murderers and liars with the Jerk who accidentally murdered a city in the end being the most innocent of them all.
Abyss was a great wild but it felt too damn long after van died the first time.

Are you mentally ill?
>>377755008
My fucking nigger.
Tales of Symphonia was god tier . Shake after that game the series went full weebshit
>>377757226
what is some game where the villain wins no matter what you do?
Its goose
>>377757680
Compared to some of the bullshit I dealt with(FF games, disgaea and other japanese games) back in the day it wasn't too bad but this was before I played Shin megami tensei Nocturne so I hadn't gone into my grand theft auto pokemon demon rpg habit yet.
>>377755765
Gotta admit he was right and Raiden proved him wrong when he wrecked him in the end.
Think he still won in the end too when he started some kind of civil war type shit.
>>377757938
JRPGs in general are prone to being cheesy. Mithos is a well written character despite that.

Diablo is an obvious one, Xenosaga series, and an Old one Kefka who gets beaten but becomes a god, kills most of the world along with fucking it up and does it for years on end.
>>377757627
Just one?
>Chosen one's journey to save the world accompanied by guardians
>Plot twist involves journey ending in Chosen one's self-sacrifice
>Everyone knows about this except the protagonist, the people who do know go on doing it because they're convinced there's no other way
>Protagonist is idealistic, convinces people to FIND another way
>Chosen one is a devout follower of the church running the world
>Church later turns out to be corrupt
>When the party finds out the church is corrupt, they're labeled as traitors by the church
>Race with access to advanced technology is discriminated against by the church but later becomes the party's indispensable allies
>Gruff older guy who doesn't talk much but is stronger than any of the other guardians serving as a father figure to the protagonist
>Big sister character who has no sense of humor and is good at magic
I could go on
>>377758224
Yeah but X is shit and has a boring gameplay so it doesn't matter.
>>377758339
I mean if we're going to deflect, then my counterpoint is that the Tales series is comprised of entry-level JRPGs that only weebs find appealing.
Literally nothing wrong.
>>377757685
>Abyss was a great wild but it felt too damn long after van died the first time.
I'm almost certain they originally intended things to end there and just ripped out certain parts from it to fit into the last third of the game.
No Dr. Breen?
>>377754524
>>377755008
Tales often does a good job of portraying it's antagonists well given they're usually in shit situations that promotes their development.

Can anyone really say he did nothing wrong especially when the opposing side being the top spirits are basically the ones who instigated everything and go out of their way to be dicks?

Are you retarded? Andrew Ryan wasn't the villain. He wasn't even portrayed as a villain.
Someone explain to me why did Andrew Ryan fail in his objective?
They made a mistake, but the protagonist's actions only made it worse.
>>377759254
his only objective was to make money
he died
"you can't take it with you when you go"
he failed
>>377754524
If he did nothing wrong then why do you call him a villain?

he didn't have a choice. Combine forced him. I think he's the good guy because he intentionally appeared bad in the eyes of Gordon Freeman, allowing him to kill Breen and get one step closer to the combine's out of earth operations
>>377759497
I dunno, he fucked up by getting the Horde into a lot of wars it didn't need to get into. His first reaction to finding any new land was to conquer it. Wars only create short term economic booms, doesn't make sense when they can't even figure out basic agriculture.
>>377754524
All he wanted was Wada's love.
>>377759405

>>377761072
I mean it's kinda confusing but if you really want the teal deer...
Ryan built a city based on the concept that
1) Your work is all because of you
2) That rules and regulations are an attempt by the weak to control the strong
3) If you aren't the elite your are just a dirty moocher, so only the elite could live there
This didn't work out cause it turns out that people still need to scrub the toilets and fix the pipes, so the some of the new lower class started smuggling in good and becoming powerful, Ryan realized that they were gaining the traction to upsurp him & "oh shit regulation is meant to stop this sorta thing", became authoritarian to maintain control. This caused people to throw stones living in a glass case under the sea.
>>377759254
>be brilliant capitalist who started a sucessful industry
>get sick of govt meddling
>decide to start your own nation whose citizens are only wealthy or self made
>somehow despite owning entire networks of steel plants, rubbing elbows with the rich and super wealthy don't realize that the ludicrously rich probably don't want to unclog toilets
Tbh I'm pretty sure Ryan himself always knew that his utopia would never come to be except for him and his cronies. His history makes it clear that he was power hungry and controlling so he probably concocted the whole thing as a ponzi scheme to feed his inferiority complex by stripping people of their wealth and forcing them to do manual labor use him.

Truly the deepest lore.

>>377761072
>>377759254
He didn't bring anyone to unclog the toilets
Which honestly could have been fixed with giving the lower class decent wages considering how profitable I'm sure rapture was for him, but it would go against his libertarian ideals
Unions are a necessary evil, and his banning of such organizations it possible for fontaine to organize a lower-class uprising.
The way to counter this of course would be either allow unions or making such things a public service(government owned), which are the american and russian ways of handling this problem respectively
>>377763776
But he founded The Patriots
>muh someone has to clean the toilets argument
CLEAN IT UP WAGIE
>>377759547
It was originally intended to not have a suppression field and the combine would have child laborers in the game.
Of course it's a big no no in popular media.

>>377760962
He got himself indoctrinated like a fool thats a big mistake right there
>>377764002
>giving the underclass wages
Wouldn't have worked because these people were literally the best and brightest in each of their respective fields. It's not really addressed well beyond a few people complaining about coming to Rapture expecting to be rich but none of these people would've been okay with plumbing toilets in the long run
>>377764983
I guess I always assumed the original people had children at some point and from there they got the different jobs
Now that I think about it, Ryan has been alive the whole time so it can only be maybe 30ish years old.
>>377764983
In the Atlas Shrugged, it was explained that the brilliant inventors were ok with unclogging toilets because they believed their turn would come eventually once their superiors retired.
>>377754915
my property, my rules.
>>377766019
Well, as long as you freely admit to the hypocrisy of the situation.
Ultimately Ryan's first and foremost mistake was forgetting that the "burdened geniuses" he wished to freed from the "shackles of the parasites" don't exist in a bubble, and he had no mechanisms in place to deal with the tension of their personal ambitions griding up against one another and causing damage and instability to the society as a whole. Which is about half the point of real-world governments, and also, incidentally, the reason why people who unironically say Armstrong was right too are either incredibly shortsighted or ignorant about the consequences of just magically making government go away one nice morning.
