A shy guy who lost his mask, and uses other masks that he's found as temporary replacements. Before uses specific attacks he would change his mask to whatever one went with that attack. Like, one would be a snifit mask to shoot a projectile. No idea what overworld ability would be.

A Chargin Chuck who knows everything there is to know about any sport, but is terrible at all of them. Attacks would be charging, throwing baseballs/footballs, multiplying himself, etc. Overworld ability allows him to hold Mario like a football and charge full speed in one direction and wont stop until he smashes into a wall, destroying certain cracked walls.

A ghost Shy Guy who wields a proportionately big-ass spectral sword. Hits hard and is a good swap for what Mario needs a turn or two to heal up. Overworld, he can cut open fragile walls with his ghost blade.

A Ninji that's godawful at stealth and just rushes at the enemy the instant she sees them. Maybe she can throw shurikens that can act as platforms.

A gangster Shy Guy named "Sly Guy" that functions as the starting partner of the game. Maybe instead of Tattle he rats out the enemies he used to work with.

The plot (I guess) is about Bowser finding a gigantic pile of treasure, only to be taken control of by a golden Phanto mask named "Specto" that later takes control over Bowser's Kingdom and soon the Mushroom Kingdom and robs most people of their gold.

Those buildings have been done for a while, but at the moment they're just decorative. The ones on the right don't even have collision on them.
Making a "go inside" thing is one major bit of overworld stuff I haven't done yet.

I got my associate in programming years ago but was never proficient enough to use it. During my game design course the game I made also needed the go inside check. It was annoying as hell to figure out. Basically you needed to have code to check if the player interacted with a invisible area where the door was. If they did then you transition them to the appropriate map associated with that spot. Then you have to remember to make sure to set the player's position away from the doors so they don't end up in a endless loop of transitioning between maps.
It is one of those pieces of code that seems simple in theory but getting it set up is a pain.

Since there's a lot of good ideas going around, I may as well post the ones I came up with a while back and see if I can get more feedback.

This is the current set I have planned.

His design has gotten a bit more work, but still feels like it could use more.

I really just like the idea of a blooper partner and how it could work in the overworld.

Basically I know I want a chapter set in a computer/digital world. I wanted a waifu/idol program thing that would help Mario out in the chapter then get a real body by the end and chose to leave her creator/old role behind.
Honestly, doesn't even need to be a Magikoopa. More just the idea of a "waifu overload" character that gets a chance to go out and be her own thing.

He is the trusted butler of some royalty that is in danger and is told to accompany Mario to stop said danger.

He is calm and collective, a real butler attitude. But he does have a short fuse, and snaps into a rage where he aplogizes every time he goes into it. Battle moves can involve a tail smack, serving a special tea that heals, being thrown by Mario, and a special moves where he goes Berserk and rampages around the stage.

A Lakitu and his talking cloud girlfriend who you have to reunite. On her own the cloud can just blow some things away. When you get them back together the Lakitu can throw blocks and spinies for attacks and puzzles. Getting hit in battle will cause one of the two to run away for a few turns.

A spoony Pianta bard. Styles himself a ladies man. Out of battle he can use his ukelele to make anyone dance. In battle he provides buffs and can hide to avoid damage.

An old war vet Hammer Brother named Jack. He initially looks like a normal Koopa, but after witnessing Mario's actions through the chapter, he regains his spark and dons his old uniform to help him out. His attacks would be based on the different types of Hammer Bros. that he learned from in his platoon.

The original Spy guy had simple flowers on it's head. I tried to make Recon Guy unique by giving him a rose-like flower, and Crocus/the Floro Sprouts seemed like a neat reference to use.
But again, it didn't end up looking right so he's gonna have to be redone overall. I really messed up trying to translate it from the PM64 sprite to how Shy Guys look in the later games.

Overall, how did I do with all the partners and bosses? If I ever make a game out of it, it'd be called "Paper Mario: The Bountiful Treasure". I can't draw though, so there's that.

I'm going to be trying to get my prologue together once I get my foundation done, so I have some of my plot down:

>Mario & Peach go on vacation
>Go to a distant, metropolitan city, far from the Mushroom Kingdom
>After checking into their hotel, located in the titanic Mega Shroom Tower, they go out exploring
>They get mugged soon after by a gangster gloomba, Gloombob
>Combat tutorial where Mario stomps the fucker
>To try and weasel his way out of things, Gloombob offers to act as their guide since he knows the city like the back of his hand (or would if he had hands)
>They agree and then hear someone yelling for help
>They find a strange classy looking gentleman (not sure on race) saying his key has been stolen
>He insists that it's super important to get his key back and that the thief ran into a bad part of town

>Gloombob doesn't want to go, but finally gives in when the gentleman offers a cash reward
>First enemy area in back alleys of the city
