no but there is a good and growing budget tier market in japan (Neptunia, Akiba's Beat, and pretty much all of Idea Factory games). They are not as good as the AA games we had on PS2 but they are nice for the most part.

Probably not, everything these days has to have franchise potential now, so it either needs to be AAA or it isn't going to be made at all.

We need to wait 10 or more so years for the indie scene to evolve past their nostalgic retro phase and try to produce modern games, we already got some gems out of shit like space engineers which is slowly becoming an eldrich abomination of an awesome game considering they added in planets, the ability to build mechs, and multiserver support to allow players to run games on an MMO scale.

I really miss AA games alot. That was mostly the entire 6th gen library and was a diverse one. All games back then had a uniqueness and charm to them. They all died off in 7th gen due to increase cost of HD game development cost. Triple AAA games pretty much dominated the spotlight and are over advertised to grab everyone's attention. There is no way for a AA to be successful anymore due to the excessive need and cost for advertisement. A game like darksiders 3 is highly likely to flop very hard unless the franchise is really established enough to grab people's attention and interest.

That's the problem nowadays. The middle tier devs and their games have fallen by the wayside. So now there's only small indie developed games and big AAA massive budget title with jack shit in between with the few rare middle tier stuff effectively feeling like a stripped down and unfinished copy of an existing popular game with a few gimmicky variations that are usually half-assed.

Maybe when we learn to develop cheap enough without massive quality drops in fidelity. It will mean you might see similar assets in some games but at the same time the tools are getting there.

For example, creating a shooter with latest graphics in UE4 shouldn't be expensive these days. There just isn't that much market to simpler single player games, or so they're deeming, but things like CoD MW sequels weren't that expensive to produce ultimately.
