What went wrong?
>>377717770
Not enough hype and PS1 was cheaper.
>>377717770
too expensive and way ahead of its time.
it was an amazing console.
>>377718089
Ghost is that you?
you can burn games without modding
not enough games to draw prospective customers when it really mattered
the graphics were too advanced
>>377717770
I had great fun with it despite it failing.
>>377718078
I remember there being an awful lot of hype for it at the time.
>>377718560
Shame it wasn't enough to beat Sony. Didn't it pioneer internet connectivity for consoles?
32x
Saturn
PS2
Internal fighting
PS2 was much more powerful and came with a DVD player
>>377717770
PS2 hype steamrolled over any chance it might have had.
>>377718692
Wasn't even the first sega console to do it
>>377718882
Sega Channel was it's own separate service. Had nothing to do with the internet.
>>377718882
Poor SEGA, always ahead of the curve yet was constantly mocked for it
>>377719182
Ah, my mistake that was based on television technology.
This was based on internet tech, though.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/XBAND
>>377718882
>autistic segaing
>>377718089
There was nothing about it that was ahead of its time.
It was just a solid piece of hardware with some really good games.
>>377718089
>>377718169
>>377719574
>This was based on internet tech, though.
XBAND was also it's own service having nothing to do with the internet. The modem dialed into a central matchmaking server. Once a potential opponent was found, it either instructed your modem to wait for a call or it dialed your opponent. The connection between players was point-to-point. See also: DWANGO.
>>377721021
The question wasn't whether the Dreamcast had the first "internet service" but "internet connectivity", which XBAND was.
DC might have had the first first-party internet service.
>>377717770
Sony's hype machine for normies. DID YOU KNOW IT CAN LAUNCH NUCLEAR MISSILES?!?! PS2 IS A SUPERCOMPUTER
meanwhile PS2 could play Shenmue fucking never
>>377718882
That was a service though. The actual first SEGA console with an internet browser and online play was the SEGA Saturn.
>>377722935
>meanwhile PS2 could play Shenmue fucking never
Are you implying there was a technical reason preventing Shenmue from ever running on a PS2? Because that's utter bullshit.
Maybe it would have taken a hit on the textures but it could have run it. PS2 did have Yakuza, remember?
Sega's downfall because of mistakes from the past.
Dreamcast had pretty amazing library for the short lifespan(like 2 years and half).
Online was fun as shit and worked. PSO was an amazing experience in the early months until the hackers started to fuck things off
>>377718089
>dreamcast
>expensive
What? Compared to what? To the playstation that was out for years?
Electronic Arts happened, OP
>>377717770
Easiest console to pirate games on ever
>>377717770
Sega Japan fighting with American branch.
>>377722050
>>377722050
>The question wasn't whether the Dreamcast had the first "internet service" but "internet connectivity", which XBAND was.
No, it wasn't. It was an entirely separate, proprietary service. There's no "internet connectivity" involved at any stage.
>>377723075
>The actual first SEGA console with an internet browser and online play was the SEGA Saturn.
The NetLink games use point-to-point dial-up similar to XBAND. And like XBAND, this isn't really "online gaming" as we think of it today, since the only connection is between two users' modems.
>>377717770
lots of shit that Sega built up to that the Dreamcast itself didn't do. so no, nothing went wrong with the Dreamcast.
had a solid as fuck library of exclusive games and amazing arcade perfect ports. RIP Dreamcast
Shitty controllers
>>377718882
X-Band was before Sega Channel
and that was on SNES too
shit was like 5.99 a month to play MK2 and NBA Jam back in 1994. cool as shit back in the day.
>never had a Dreamcast growing up>recently I bought one and burnt every Dreamcast game I could to some CD-Rs
I still play Crazy Taxi every night.
>>377718526
Toy Commander is one of my favorite games of all time. That games multiplayer is fuckin great.
>>377725857
feels more... right... on the dreamcast than ps2 or gamecube
>>377717770
PS2 happened. I still remember when this thing was available everyone, including vidya magazines, shilling the PS2 and giving the "advice" to wait for it's release. Sony is the cancer that ruins vidya.
>>377717770
Everyone was waiting for the PS2, which then blew it out the water
>>377726843
the DC had a huge as fuck launch though
it was good it came out when it did, zero competition and the PS2 wouldn't be out for another 13 months.
also had better launch titles, the PS2 had like 39 titles, but a good majority of them were shit.
>>377720038
>Arcade perfect ports when no other console was capable at the time
>Online gaming on a console
>I'm talking everything. MMOs, racing, sports, Chao, fighting, everything over a blazing fast 56k modem
>Free DLC and user created content (new dungeons and weapons for Skies of Arcadia, download other player's Chao in Sonic Adventure 2, custom tags in Jet Set Radio)
>In the year 1999
Give it some credit anon
>>377726386
I only had the demo and always wanted the real game. That, MDK2, and Looney Tunes Space Race will always remain forever out of reach for me
>>377726494
That's because it's arcade perfect bruv
>>377717770
Sega's stupidity with the genesis and Saturn.People started to not trust them as a video game company. So no one bought it.
>>377727407
you forgot all those seasonal outfits for SA2, new missions in PSO and a fucking CABLE MODEM that no one bought.
also, quake 3 could play with PC players
>>377728273
Shit I forgot about the PSO and Halloween costumes in SA2. Never knew that about Quake 3 actually, I never had the chance to play mine online.
>>377728820
i did
it was pretty cool playing with PC players off the DC
>>377720038
>There was nothing about it that was ahead of its time.
according to /vr/, the dreamcast gpu was better than voodoo 2 sli
