Well yeah, that's exactly right. I really enjoyed Automata, it was a good experience of a game, but the whole 9S thing was really a sour note.

Not only is route B the same as route A, so you're just replaying the exact same thing all over again, but now you're doing it as 9S who is not as fun as 2B, his combat is significantly worse, and the whole hacking minigame is really annoying. It's just a bad experience all around.

Then you get to route C and it's finally a new experience, and holy shit you finally get to play as A2, are we going to learn about her and her motives? Why the fuck did she randomly kill the forest king? Lol nope turns out you only get to play as A2 for like 30% of route C and the other 70% is once again more 9S. What makes it even worse is the 9S sections of route C is the worst part of the entire game. Maybe i'm the only one who thinks that but to me, playing as 9S and doing those 3 metal mini towers was the worst thing in the whole game, just a fucking nightmare. Each tower is long and tedious, no fucking save points at all so the game crashes? START ALL OVER. We put some new enemies in their that you haven't fought before and they can just randomly one shot you even on normal difficulty, lmao START OVER! The second tower being composed of 6 fucking long and annoying hacking mini games is just an extra kick in the balls. What a fucking horrible experience.

Game is good overall, 2B and A2 stuff is fun, music is beautiful that compliments a lot of intense moments, 9S is okay as a character, his conversation when battling A2 was the best part about him, but the whole playing as 9S was gay and awful.

The games better than one might figure but it's pretty evident that it's a "for the memes" sort of game that has a really specific audience in mind to claim it's genius. The press felt more intrigued by it if anything whereas it's the hardcore weeb crowd that seems to be going on about the whole masterpiece thing. The writing is really uneven too containing some pretty good bits, but also a lot of as Taro Yoko himself called it "poop" mainly to do with how cheesy, cliche ridden and just kind of bad the dialogue can get at times, particularly for the machine faction. There's times when it hits Drakengard 3 levels of bad "edgy" dialogue but other times where I almost take it seriously as a post apocalyptic tale that's trying to get you to think a little about mankind's self-destructive tendencies and how we're probably destined to fuck ourselves over.

Nier is a really good way to spot all the plebs of /v/

My girlfriend actually bought this game and we played it by taking turns whenever one of us died. Was a pretty enjoyable experience overall. Sounds like you couldnt look past the sexy character designs and judged the game based on that rather than its content.

Cause it more or less is made exclusively for that crowd and you don't have to read between the line too much on the whole "I make weird games for weird people" to realize who Yoko is talking about. You just have to look at how much fanart it got and the style of writing and characterization it has to realize the hardcore otaku/weeb crowd loves it or rather Yoshida's character design for it and by extension somewhat the game itself. Platinum kind of made it a little more accessible to people outside that crowd, but I get the sense those people just kind of played it, figured it was weird and kind of a neat distraction and moved on or went back to other games while the weebs/otaku crowds that dominate places like /v/ will hail it as the only good game to come out in the past 5 years. It's incredibly telling and people's sole defense whenever people criticize it is to scream at them and spam memes so you can tell how much it really means to people or what they took away from it in the actual level of effort they're willing to put into defending it against criticism.

The story is definitely padded out to shit with the first couple of playthroughs and probably could have been consolidated a lot more like they did with the 3rd route. I really just kind of wish they'd made Route A and B just one playthrough where your switching character perspectives as necessary for that narrative purpose and save a shit ton of time. Since I got the Deadly Heal +3, Melee Defense +6 and auto-regen and auto-item+3 chips among others any element of challenge in the game kind of flew out the window. As long as you have enough health to not get 1 shotted and especially if there's cannon fodder around to get the +30% heatlh refills per kill all element of challenge basically flies out the window.

It's pretty much textbook this at least for the first playthrough though. Adam and Eve are particularly painful as characters. They really do just feel like "Fuck we want to try to get some fujoshi to play this too so lets gay it up with some homoerotic antagonist bosses" cause they essentially could have been or looked like anything as long as it still looked like a human or android and nothing would have changed much about their role in the story. They also have the worst dialogue of any major character IMO by a long shot.

That's the same reason /v/ claims to love most Japanese games but yeah more or less. Despite what they might claim when the biggest defenses of the game is Taro Yoko Is Such A Weird Dude memes and Dat Ass it's kind of a telegraph. Funny thing is for me after about 5 hours of hacking and slashing robots and then playing as 9S I barely even notice it as a thing anymore. I mean every single Japanese game has a hot chick to try to sell it and now you have Nintendo practically undercutting 2B with Twintelle where it already looks like a similar sort of thing is starting to happen with that games attention level on social media. It's like "Oh yeah you wanna play that game over at Square Enix, well have Tea Sipping Legs McGee with an even more defined ass!" and then Yoshida is clearly just doing his thing with Stormblood and Yotsuyu now.

If anything all of this just starts a new trend of ass focus in Japanese game character design which isn't necessarily a bad thing or a sudden trajectory change from the standard marketing tactics of this era.

Fair enough. I mean it is a better story arc than anything else in the game by far but IMO that's more relative than anything. It's the games "good" and more thematically complete story arc which compared to it's first couple and particularly the first one which just sort of ends up looking like a masterpiece in comparison, particularly to impressionable weebs with extremely low standards for storytelling and dialogue in video games.
