60 fps (or higher) is important to certain games. First-person anything (so FPS, simulations, and VR), and action games (using the term in the most broad sense, to encompass everything from STGs to platformers), all benefit from higher frame rates.

There's also no downside in other types of games, so why settle for anything less?

Sixty fps objectively looks better, and it's jarring to switch between frame rates.

I had played the dark souls games on computer for a long time and when bloodborne came out, it was like playing a different franchise. You get used to it quickly, but with dodging games it has more impact than say, a first person shooter. Everything is playable at or around 20fps but a higher framerate is better.

But I have to say - and it's weird to say it - but I sometimes "regret" buying a 144Hz GSync monitor. I recently went back to play DiRT on my Xbox360 and the low fps were jarring. I used to love that game, played through all of it.

If it's stable I can manage, I eventually just get used to it. Although there is a noticable difference when switching games (Say, from Dark Souls 1 on PC running at stable 50 to Bloodborne running at a stable 25), it's never an issue for me unless it's below 15fps.

Frame jittering is the worst, though. I'd rather have a stable 15fps than a 45fps that jitters to 30 any time a non-basic action (Like a critical hit or a move that generates an above-average amount of particle effects) is performed.

30fps for a game like Zelda is perfectly fine, but it becomes a problem when it frequently dips way below that.

That also doesn't mean that 60fps isn't preferred if possible. Because it is. Always.

Anything above 60 is a total meme though similar to the 4k meme. While I'm sure there are machines out there that can run the latest games at max settings 4k 144fps I'm not convinced the cost of those things is worth it.
