So here's the story.

Mega man battle network.
Always wanted to get into it, never played or saw much of it other than some anon webms.
Apparently there's a fucking bucket and a half of them.

Where do I start, what should I know?
>>
>>377698906
if you've never played any of em, start with 1.
If you get bored with it, move on to 2. If you ONLY want to play a single entry, try 2-3 or 5-6
>>
2, 3, 6

That's really all you need. 3 is the best.
>>
>>377699198
>>377699281
Do they have a story progression or new additions?

like say game 2 adds a new mechanic on top of the first
game 3 adds new changes/quality of life etc.

I'm mainly interested for the gameplay but if there are games that play exactly the same I'd like to skip them and just go to unique entries that do something new compared to say the first game
>>
>>377699475
I'm too sleepy to explain things, let me rephrase that in more human language

if I start with the first game and game 2 is exactly the same gameplay wise and only progresses the story then what are those games in the series?

Or do they all play differently?
>>
>>377699475
The Battle Network games do have story progression, but honestly they are very simplistic, you could play them all to get it but honestly I would recommend the anime (subbed, no censorship) if you care so much for it.

They add new mechanics for mega man every game. Base mechanics stay the same but you get form changes or swapping navis etc. etc.

None of them really play the same.
MMBN1 is the base.
MMBN2 adds style changes (you change element and look and powers)
MMBN3 adds more styles and some other minor stuff
MMBN4 removes styles for souls (you mix yourself with other netnavis)
MMBN5 keeps this and adds an SRPG battle system that happens during the story once in a while.
MMBN6 makes souls a little easier to use and lets you turn into a beast mode for extra combos and damage. You also play bits of the story as other navis.

>>377699690
The anime is genuinely, genuinely terrible. Only the movie is any good.
>>
>>377699668

If you don't start with the first you will not want to come back to it. It allows for wildly different strategies than future ones.

Spoilers aside, The gameplay jump between 1 and 2 is pretty big. I actually like 2 the most. 4-6 they gimp certain things.
>>
>>377698906
If you can understand Japanese, then I recommend you play the japanese version Battle Network 6 since there is removed content in the localized version.

>>377699760
>SRPG battle system
Always hated that cause its only an excuse to control other net navi

I'll only list the most important changes 'cuz character limit. Chip library changes drastically in every game, and starting with BN4, so do souls/crosses (plus those are also different between versions). Also, chips get restricted more and more in every game starting with BN2, until BN6 loosens the leash a little.

BN1 just has chips, a weak infinite gun, and elemental armors that let you halve damage from one element. In general the game is pretty braindead.

BN2 replaces armors with styles, which have important effects like giving you a shield action or stronger buster attacks. Starting with BN2 the series put a greater emphasis on support chips, and from here on code synergy is essential.

BN3 adds navi customizer, which lets you have many different bonuses, like previously style-exclusive shield, and relegates previously permanent buster powerups to it. Heavy chip restrictions with the introduction of Mega and Giga class chips.

BN4 replaces styles with souls, which have a bigger amount of effects bundled into them in comparison, but only last 3 turns. It also heavily restricts customizer effects.

BN5 mostly just limits BN4's additions and general series' mechanics (RIP Program Advances). Of note is its chaos unison system that lets you change into a navi soul for just one turn with a very powerful charge attack.

BN6 replaces souls with crosses, that behave similarly, but can be activated at any time and aren't lost unless you turn them off yourself or get hit with their elemental weakness. Customizer restrictions are somewhat lifted, and standard chips are now limited based on their MB size.

The story is really nothing to write home about. 1-3 are okay, given it's a children's series, and then the writer was having a continuous, worsening brain hemorrhage during 4-6.

a. There is a romhack that re-adds the content into English

b. I liked it. Added another dimension instead of just brawling with viruses. Also fighting enemies coming from both sides.

>>377701414
BN4 by far has the worst story. 5-6 are just... kinda there.
>>
Megaman is actually the digitized consciousness of Lan's twin brother who died as a baby
>>
Just play 2, 3, 6 and maybe 5 if you really like the games, don't bother with 1 or 4 you'll get nothing out of them
>>
>>377701694

I would like to add BN4's was the first to add the restriction on number of program advances per battle. It also introduced desperation/comeback mechanic in the form of dark chips. BN5 mainly just nerfed many of the Double Souls and gave us broken Chaos Unison. BN6 nerfed everything and the game is must slower because of it.
>>
>>377703374
>I would like to add BN4's was the first to add the restriction on number of program advances per battle
That was BN5.

>BN6 nerfed everything and the game is must slower because of it
Also BN5. BN6 was a breath of fresh air in comparison.
>>
>>377698906
Play from first onward if you care about story. 1st and 2nd kinda play the same, I haven't had the time to play 3, I originally came in on the 4th and onward.

I know for a fact there are extra game mechanics added on the fourth and so on.

Going back to the story, it's easier to understand if you at least play the first one. Sometimes they reference shit that you wouldn't get unless you beat the first one for the most part.
>>
>>377701694
WAT
AAAHHH SHIT
>>
>>377698906
man I remember playing one of these games fondly though I don't remember which one. I guess it's time to start it back up.
>>
>>377703520
5 wasn't much fun unless you hacked the eReader Mod system and made some crazy-ass builds.
>>
What's so bad about the first one?
>>
>>377703830
it's bare bones. 1st one is more like a proof of concept, 2 and 3 are the concept. 4 is similar to 1 in that it's pretty much a reboot. 4 killed my interest in the series, what i loved most was how the world seemed alive in 2 and 3 and how you could jack into pretty much anything and talk to people and go to the different online spaces. Like the whole jack in system really gave a reason to check every single object and talk to every person in the game. it was great

BN6 capped every program advance @ 600, allowed Aiming chips to remove traps, and Wind to blow away auras. There was no true beat all defense, but offense didn't improve to capitalize. You could still boost PA's in BN4/5 to absurd levels. 2xHero is a joke in BN6.
>>
BN1 feels kinda like a beta for the rest of the series but also the story is kinda important
BN2 pretty good improvement over 1 in every way
BN3 most consider the best in the series
BN4 most consider the worst in the series
BN5 pretty good
BN6 pretty good

BN1 was never really important desu. They killed the point of Hub.bat by the second game. What was the game where Megaman literally/almost died?
>>
>>377704269
Colonel Force + AreaLock + ColorPoint + Atk+30 + Beast Out Gregar was rather effective, PAs be damned. Can easily drain an opponent of 1200 HP.

Also the most accurate about the franchise.
>>
>>377701575
>Added another dimension instead of just brawling with viruses
All you do in it is brawl with viruses, with one or two weak navis somewhere at the end. It makes turn-skipping chips useless, and stall chips were made useless in and out of this minigame just for the sake of it. What does it actually add, except maybe a reason for Buster Up to exist, and even that's only because making a proper folder is worthless when only Megaman can make use of it?

They were slightly too long, though.

and it's still better than the episodic anime. Consider that.
>>
Definitely one of the best series I've played growing up. Shame there's no games that have a similar play style to this series.
>>
>>377698906
>Apparently there's a fucking bucket and a half of them.
There are three mainline games, MMBN1 to MMBN6. The last four have Red/Blue versions like Pokemon did. Sometimes they have a few different version-specific missions, but overall different versions of the game are the same. So, just the six mainline games.

There is also Network Transmission (GameCube game, tries to be side scrolling like the original series but is terrible), Operate Shooting Star (Battle Network/Starforce crossover, apparently terrible), and Battle Chip Challenge (just a bunch of MMBN fights, not sure how well it turned out). Overall, you are probably best simply focusing on the main series.
>>
>>377708093
There probably can't be for legal reasons.
Or people are too ashamed to make one because everyone will call on them literally copying it, because you kind of have to to make it work.

>Why did the GBA have some of the best Mega Man games on it?
Less focus on making shitty 3D graphics, less focus on going after some massive AAA market, more focus on making the game fun and memorable in order to make it stand out.

The legal part is what I was afraid of too. I was thinking of making a fan made game for fun, turned into my own game with similar gameplay, but because of how unique the BN series is I really don't think I'd be able to legally get away with taking what I liked from the BN series and adding what I thought was interesting.

>>
>>377710418
not really, the whole thing makes no sense. All he did was take Hub's DNA (from the fetus? pretty sure he was born, there's pictures around the house of both lan and hub, hub just died young), make that into a computer code, and copy paste that into the code of a net navi. and somehow that gave megaman hub's personality, look, memories? of the real hub.
>>
>>377710606
I guess he just translated code to DNA and filled in the blanks like looks and personality himself. The DNA part is the only way I can explain the fusion synchro shit, but even then that's hard to explain.

Styles had elements and an effect. Elements changed the charged attack, and the effects were various. Custom style would get extra chips in the window, guts powered up the buster, etc. Bug style was probably the most fun because it would randomly affect you with positive or negative effects, like invincibility, health drain, or it would move your character constantly.
