DMC1 is the definitive edition. Perfect blend of Resident Evil exploration and stylish combat

DMC2 is so bad that after 20 years I still haven't played it. No game has a poorer reputation

DMC3 is where everything started to go wrong. Everything got dialled up to 12 "LUL SO CRAZY" which attracted a shit ton of millenials to the franchise.

DMC4 is literally 1/4 of a game. Even the re-release has you repeating the same 1/4 of the level for 5 different characters. But the combat is pretty fun.

1 is good but rather slow compared to the later games.

2 is boring and much easier than the other games. People mostly play it just to see how bad it really is. Also has the least fun version of Dante.

3 makes combat much more fluid and adds extra stuff like special styles to combat, allowing for even crazier combos. Has the most memorable boss fights with Vergil.

4 has the most advanced combat when you are playing as Dante, with by far the most combo potential yet. Styles can be switched mid-combo now. You also play as Nero who sadly is not as stylish as Dante since he has less weapons and no extra styles. Level design is kinda shitty though. You literally play 1/2 of the game as Nero and then all the levels in reverse order as Dante. Very lazy design.

The third game is really good. 2 can be enjoyable if it's the first game you play, but if you revisit it you'll see that's it's easily the worst game in the franchise.

The reboot game is pretty fun, but the story is ridiculous and the game play is way more simplistic. It's not as bad as a lot of people will let you believe.

They're okay.

The first is like this weird arcade game that was like Kamiya wanting an RE arcade game or some weird shit that worked really well but lacks the depth, by far, of the later games.

The second is streamlined, ugly, shallow and not very fun; I hear the Lucia disc really improves the game over Dante's but honestly dropped the game before that.

The third is amazing, and the fourth pushes the highs higher but the lows lower kinda deal.

DmC has a really dumb story and is kind of easy but everything works. Still not sure why they gave it to Ninja Theory for their "storytelling" when;
a) Ninja Theory actually can't tell a story for shit
b) Nobody in their right mind gives a fuck about DMC's story, just maybe some of the character designs and dialogue

Overall, definitely a series worth playing to kingdom fuck and getting good at, would recommend.

DMC1 was amazing for its time but by today's standards is a bit plain.
DMC2 is so incredibly boring that most people recommend you don't even play it.
DMC3 is where the series became what it is, and is known as one of the best action games ever made.
DMC4 is a step up from 3 in terms of mechanics and the core game play is absolutely amazing, but it's barely half a game and everything else about it is significantly worse than 3 making it a worse game overall.
DmC isn't actually nearly as bad as most people on this board say it is but it's completely different from 3 and 4 and overall not nearly as good.

Anyone who says DMC1 is the only good one is just a shitposter trying to be contrarian.
