Everyone puts so much emphasis on kanji that they stress themselves out and quit. Learn kanji and vocabulary at the same time by learning the readings within words AS you read and play. Stop grinding random decks with no context.

>>
>>377697230
Cards = words.
>>
if you really want to learn you should just get an airbnb in a small JP town and go chill there for a month or 2 studying and talking to people.

alternatively, you can grind grammar/vocabulary until you can stumble your way through a children's book, then slowly just start reading harder and harder material. games are hard though because sometimes the phrasing will be formal/easy and sometimes it won't. it's a lot easier when the formality/context of the situation is easily ascertainable like in social situations/books

>>
>>377697549
well you're not going to be able to understand shit fresh off the boat, it's very intimidating in person.. personally i would just go for kanji so that you can read/write and point to stuff, speaking fluency takes full immersion in the culture (or a good native tutor)

>He thinks Japanese people speak English
That's a lie and you know it. Even at the university I'm at only a select few students know English or even dare uttering it.

Also what a lot of Kanjigrinders seem to forget is that you actually need to use a language. I'm not a native English speaker, and the way I learned the language is through television. Here in the Netherlands we didn't dub all of our shows and movies, rather we subbed them so I was always surrounded by English.
Now I know the translation between English and Japanese is a bit more rough, but honestly to begin you really only need kana, a basic grasp of the grammar rules and a lot of patience. Check the /djt/ resources and then leave the /djt/ forever and start reading Yotsuba

>>
>>377698164
I spent half a year in Japan and niggas do not understand english. Like clearly they were sleeping in that class because the only people who knew english were the ones that fucking love America. Much different in Korea where damn near everyone spoke english on some level.

You will get by in Japan without Japanese but the experience will be significantly watered down cause you can barely communicate even the most simple things.

REMEMBER ANONS:
Learning Kanji is fine. However grinding only kanji every day is not the way to go.

Apply your knowledge. Learn through exposure. If your only exposure to Japanese is you grinding 20-30 kanji on a daily basis you will start hating Japanese and yourself. Read a little kids manga/book, watch a chinese cartoon without subs first and with subs afterwards and do a check of what you knew. Just keep applying it. You didn't know how to cycle at first and most likely tripped up a lot or got help from your parents and some training wheels. A language is almost like that

>>
>>377698065
Beginners might read "skip kanji and learn vocabulary" as him telling them to not bother learning kanji that goes with words, but to just learn their phonetic instead.

Like instead of bothering to learn 尊敬/そんけい/Respect they'll just learn そんけい/Respect and think that's it. "Skip kanji" right?
>>
>>377699075
純文学 even better.
>>
>>377699075
How are LN's even that different compared to VN's when it comes to the content you are actually reading?

I mean VN's have pictures more often, sure, but I notice they don't give a fuck and just go ahead and describe the scene regardless of the picture being right there, so you end up reading what's going on anyway. Just like you would in a LN.
>>
>>377690817
What's an interesting /v/-related way to study Japanese? There was this RPG Maker Hiragana game in steam a couple months ago and I've pretty much started learning kana from there. Duolingo on iOS also has Japanese now.
>>

VNs have voices, sprites and backgrounds giving you more context.
>>
>>377699415
>pretty much all of the grammar

>>
>>377690817
No, I'm too busy learning Korean for a linguist role in the navy.
>>
>>377699372

>>
>>377699514
Voice is irrelevant since they are just voicing what's written there anyway. You are reading it regardless.

I already spoke about "sprites and backgrounds". They describe what's going on regardless of the picture already showing it. It doesn't replace the narration. Even though the person is right there in the fucking picture and you can see their face, they still go ahead and describe their facial expression in detail in the narration, for instance. At least the ones I read did so.

They just seem to ignore the fact the picture is right there and just describe it like it was a LN.
>>
>>377699767
>Voice is irrelevant since they are just voicing what's written there anyway. You are reading it regardless.
I disagree, tone and delivery add a lot of context to a line.
>>
>>377699767
Intonation plays a big part in understanding spoken Japanese though. It's fine if you just want to read for games/manga, but if you want to learn how to speak and listen to Japanese, you actually need audio.
>>
>>377699767
You're looking at it from the perspective of someone who doesn't have any problems reading standard LNs and VNs.

But from a learner's perspective voices, sprites and backgrounds can help.
>>
>>377699867
And in a LN that is described in the narration. In a VN that is described in the narration.

I know it sounds very redundant for a narration to go ahead and describe things that you can see/listen for yourself, but they do it.
>>
>>377700060
I'm not sure that's as widespread in vns as you think. Maybe in more moogycore works where the writer is aiming to pile up as many kb of text as possible, but in the majority of games? Not so much.

simple stuff like ear, nose, cat, dog. instead of teaching you kana one character at a time (with writing practice) like most books, duo just shows your words and you get to learn the sounds the characters make as they are read aloud. pretty different from how i learned but i bet it's pretty effective. good luck learning to write via duo though

care to explain the particle を?
>>
>>377702339
>shoes (or necktie, skirt, sushi
The choices are shoes, suit, skirt and necktie.

を there is the simplest usage of を there is, marking the direct object.

している there is the usage that refers to a person's outward characteristic, in this case clothing.

So the question is which of the articles of clothing can be used with をしている.

I'm clearly not talking about words that don't show up at all, they don't even deserve mention. I'm talking about there being no guarantee that you'll be reinforcing precisely the words you needed to reinforce when doing a reading session because unlike flashcards, the words you'll find when reading are completely out of your control.

For instance, maybe you just learned 獲得 and it would help you fixate it if you unexpectedly saw and recognized it in a reading session. It's a common word but even then there's no guarantee you'll come across it while reading today. Or even this week. Maybe you'll see it again 2 weeks from now. Does that mean "you clearly never needed to know it"? Fuck no. That's just how reading goes. Sometimes things show up right away and sometimes they take a while.

All you can do is just read a lot and hope it'll show up sooner rather than later.
>>
>>377702339
を marks the object.

So if you eat something:
私 は なにか を 食べる。
I (topic) something (object) eat.
I eat something.

In this case, している means "to be doing"

So it's a bit strange in my opinion but it's basically saying:

Kimura-san is the person doing a blue suit/skirt/necktie.

It could mean wearing, making, selling, etc. depending on the context.

It's good for one's own mind I think, and it's also important as a factor in downloading Japanese culture into the West.

I would like to see, in a couple years, anons mixing English and Japanese freely on imageboards and chats. A kind of combined language.Would be cool.

The irony of this thread is that video games are often awful for helping you learn a language.

Go do something that depends almost, if not entirely, on reading. Such as a novel, LN, VN, hell even manga to a lesser extent.

Video game usually has a lot of gameplay, in which you are, surprise, playing more than reading. Also, often in gameplay you'll see the same repetition of words like 防御 or 攻撃 or wtv that you don't actually need to see 2000 times and therefore could be using your time for something else more productive.

>I tried to love someone here. We talked on Facebook every single day long conversations, the friendliest girl I have ever spoken to. We hung out several times, including the long, long day in Asakusa, which was without exaggeration the happiest I have felt in years. She made me believe there was a real connection between the two of us. And then she suddenly started to distance herself from me, rejecting my invitations and gradually taking longer and longer to respond with each message, to the point where I now doubt there will ever be another. It fucked me up in a big way. I missed entire weeks of classes, drunk myself silly on a few occasions (including getting myself lost in Bunkyo for an entire day), made a habit of going on long walks to nowhere, prayed at shrines to no avail, and wondered every single day what the hell it was that I did wrong.

>My patience has run so thin that today I essentially told another girl (my closest Japanese friend or so I thought) to fuck off after them turning me down twice for Christmas. I figured it wasnt worth bothering with people who dont care.

にて in this case simply serves a more formal and polite version of で.

承る is like "take" or "accept", used in businesses by employees against customers. Specifically when taking customers' orders etc. And that's what you need to realize is the case here. So the sentence is "take orders at cheap price" = "will produce cheaply" = B.

I see. I feel like more than one option makes sense though. For instance A: you took a cheap order, naturally you'll make the final price cheap.

I guess it's missing the actual question since it just does a statement and then throws things at you. Is this a JLPT exam?
>>
>>377708859
I'm not getting any of this. Probably a reason why this isn't fully released yet.
>>
>>377708991
The first part of the sentence disqualifies A. It's オーダースーツ, suits they'll produce for you when you order them.

A means "make cheaper". For that to work they'd have to have already made suits and only be selling them.

It's not JLPT, but an exam for a scholarship by Japanese government.

You make a fair point, but I think you're missing one aspect of 値段を安くします in relation to 格安にて承ります.

格安にて承ります means they will accept the order at a low price from the get go.

The process of 値段を安くします needs for the price initially being high and then being made lower. This ultimately doesn't fit with 格安にて承ります, where the price is low from the start.

It's also worth noting these questions always tell you to choose the 最も good answer, which is B no matter how you slice it.

1. Learn Kana.

2 and/or 3. Get tae kim level grammar which is basic but covers a lot of essentials, meaning anything less than Tae Kim level is just a no no for reading.

2 and/or 3. Alongside acquiring TK level grammar pick up a few essential words on like a core 2k deck or something. Here people might differ; Some might prefer to get the whole 2k words before reading, some 1k, some 500, wtv works for you. Chances are you'll be looking words up like a madman in your early reading experiences regardless if you went for that 2k or 500. Plus, the earlier you read the better, so my personal opinion is that you should definitely NOT go for something like 2k before starting reading.

4. Start reading. Get ready to look shit up.

Addendum from a separate anon: while core 2k/6k are both really good decks they are tailored towards people learning Japanese for business purposes, which means that there will be a substantial chunk of words that aren't all that useful for a complete beginner. >needs for the price initially being high and then being made lower.
I think it can also apply if you are creating a price from nowhere (such as a custom service provider assigning one) and you are stating that you are making it a cheap one from the get go.

Honestly there are quite a few different scenarios. For instance, a client could come to a tailor and say "I want a suit but I can only spend up to X" so the client is assigning a price and the tailor works with it. Or the client can simply say "I want something on the cheap side" which leaves the tailor to assign the price himself based on what he can do, and see if the value is acceptable by the client.

Assuming the tailor has a certain liberty to work with a price, then if you consider he was asked for something cheap, it's only natural that the price he'll come up with will be cheap as requested, so in that case the tailor would be 値段を安くしています as agreed. As in, he is not lowering a price that was higher, he is simply making the price where before there was none, and he is making it cheap.

Let's take C now. 安くて上手です. That makes sense too. I can imagine a scenario where the client asks for a cheap order, and the tailor states that he'll do it cheap like requested, but well made - with skill. He is promoting himself as a professional.

Regardless of the order being for cheap, he is still a skilled craftsman. Both cheap AND proficient. 安くて上手です。

Again, not saying B is wrong, I'm just saying I can see contexts where the other options fit.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong but you are probably overlooking the fact 上手 is a na-adjective. If he wanted to say what you have in mind, that he'll do it cheaply and skillfully, he would need to transform 上手 into an adverb which you do with に.
So to say he'll make it cheaply and with skill he would say 「(スーツを)安くて上手に(作る)」. Without the に, 上手 is just not an adverb so what you are thinking doesn't apply.

> But you'll never be reading on the level of an adult.
Thank you for letting us know you have no idea what you're talking about. Contemporary japanese writers are for the vast majority of the part as easy to read as light novel writers. Albatross and Muramasa, two visual novelsare harder to read than Murakami's or Ogawa's works. If you get to mid to early 20s, sure, it will get harder, but contemporary? Hah. Also, consuming fiction IN GENERAL is a waste of time, unless you use it as an inspiration or reference to write fiction yourself, or unless it actually teaches you something. I got interested in real estate and stock market thanks to a movie, for example.

I'm sure we all have days where we skip out on our reps for a couple of hours, but there are days when I don't want to watch any weebshit or play any games either.
>>
>>377720374
>on a tangent note, is the kanji for yen & circle (円) the exact same, or am i just stupid?
Yeah.

Maybe it'll make more sense to you by equating yen with coins rather than paper money.
>>
>>377720374

Raising the max just keep it from cutting you off arbitrarily. If you do that, it fucks with the spaced repetition and it doesn't work like it's supposed to. Your workload will increase but 1-2 hours isn't too bad

Write new shit down as you learn it, helps retention. Really try to remeber what's on the other side of the card, don't just flash past it.

>>377720525
It's basically my hobby now
>>
>>377720374
>however, i've been advised to raise my maximum reviews/day to 9999, which i have, but what exactly is that supposed to do?
If you don't do it, your reviews will eventually be capped. So even though you actually have 300 cards to do every day, it'll only show you 200, and send the extra hundred to tomorrow.

It's a very stupid thing.
>>
>>377715697
I've passed N1 and I can't keep a Japanese conversation going to save my life. Though I have the same problem in English, now that I think about it.
>>
>>377720374
How many words are you at? Make sure your basic grammar stick. Take your time with grammar, the basic is essential so learning it is way more important than simply cramming tae kim so you can say "alright I finished tae kim". Past tense conjugation is base to the entire world, so make sure you know that by heart.

Also, maximum number of reviews a day is just what it says, it's self explanatory.
If that number is limited anki won't be able to show you all the review cards it think it's time because it would go over the daily limit, which means you are not seeing words when you should anymore. That accumulates and eventually anki will just not serve any purpose anymore because it simply can't show you ANYTHING when it should anymore. At that point it will just be a random display.
>>
>>377720606

Nope, it's a meme. You can achieve proper comprehension.
>>
>>377720374

Made out of lead. He lead the horse to water. Same concept.

The 9999 changes the max you'll ever be able to review for the day. You want to set it higher so missing a day leads to more work instead of completely screwing you over with missed reviews.

Recommend me some good Japanese games. I won't play them if they have a predominantly anime art style, feature katanashit combat, or have a high school setting.
>>
>>377720859
>Your workload will increase but 1-2 hours isn't too bad
I would disagree. 2 fucking hours of anki? Cmon now.

30 min of anki is more than enough. The rest of the time is spent reading, or in his case, learning basic grammar.

Time you spend staring at flash cards is time you don't spend doing real Japanaese, aka reading or holding conversations with natives or wtv. I'm not saying anki shouldn't be done, but it's a side show. 2 hours of anki is seriously ankidrone territory.

Read.
>>

I have days where I really can't be bothered but now that I can read at least basic stuff I'm having fun and I'm much more motivated than when I used to just grind anki.

Not him but do you have any advice on making the grammar stick?

For me I feel like I read about it and do the practice but then the next day it's totally gone out of my head. I think I have a problem with how to learn it because it's kind of 'abstract' and needs to be applied rather than having a solid translation or equivalent like vocab if that makes sense. Am I missing something or is it just a matter of repetition?

What does this mean?

What anime?
Like a Ghibli film?
Like Bleach?
Monster?
JoJo?
Gankutsuou?
Darker than Black?
Mirai Nikki?
Gurren Lagann?
Detroit Metal City?
Saint Young Men?
One Piece?
Dragon Ball?
Trigun?

There are a number of great J-dramas out there.

My personal favorite is My Boss My Hero.
>>
>>377722235
It's not vague. Let me help you out:
Disgaea, Tales of, Trails of Cold Steel have anime artstyles while Metal Gear Solid, Pro Evolution Soccer 2017 and Final Fantasy XV don't.
>>
>>377722476
You should probably work on improving your English first.
>>
>>377721682
My personal advice is to take it easy, don't bite more than you can chew at once. If you need to be a turtle with it's legs cut off going through whatever guide you are using, that's ok.

Apart from that, make sure you actually read and put your brain on the example sentences. If you want more you can go out on google and hunt for more examples. Wrap your brain around them. Try to mentally come up with something in your head that uses said grammar piece. Try to come up example sentences of your own in your head.

Lastly, you can have a grammar deck. While you read through grammar you can create cards with the main points, with example sentences, with specific rules, etc. Like for instance you can make a card going like "How to conjugate る verbs to potential form" and then on the back "Drop る and add られる". Just an example, but you get the picture.

I mean if you can fucking storm TK in one night and know everything, by all means go for it. I'm just tossing a few things that might help if you are having a hard time.
>>
>>377722476

One last thing, I'm using Genki at the moment - is TK better? This may just be a matter of preference though I guess.

>>
>>377724057
Genki is good because it gives you lots of examples and things to practice which is especially useful at the start when there's not much else you can read.
>>
>>377724057
As obvious as that sounds, Tae Kim is better if it works better for you. There's no other way to put it, you have to try shit and get a feel for which one makes you more comfortable. I mean clearly you are not having a blast with Genki, so go ahead and try TK. No harm in it.

If you ask ME, I'd say Genki is a school textbook, it's built around classes lasting a semester or a year (not sure which) and it takes a very classroom approach (with exercises, etc) while TK holds your hand way less, has way less examples, is more compact and it assumes if you are there to begin with, you are an independent person looking out for yourself, so it doesn't waste too much time treating you like you are an elementary student.

Also I assume after you go through the genki books completely and thoroughly you'll probably know more than someone who did the same with TK. The downside is that you will take way longer on Genki's classroom rhythm than you will on Tae Kim's.
