Wait, I am not really much into the Metal Gear franchise, but i thought Solid Snake WAS Big Boss.

Anyone can explain?

(apparently, this comic is based on the original Metal Gear game, the one before Metal Gear Solid)
>>
>>377682586
Solid Snake is a clone of Big Boss.
>>
>>377682586
>i thought Solid Snake WAS Big Boss.
No, he isn't.

There, that was easy.
>>
>>377682712
Okay, so, in Phantom Pain, do you play Solid Sanke or Big Boss? I thought MGS5 took place after MGS (and all the Metal Gear games take place before all the MGS games)
>>
>>377682837
Chronologically:
MGS3 > (Portable Ops) > Peace Walker > Ground Zeroes > MGSV > MG1 > MG2 > MGS1 > MGS2 > MGS4 > (MGR)

Solid Snake is the protagonist of MG1, MG2, MGS1 and MGS4.
Big Boss is the protagonist of MGS3, PO, PW, GZ and V.
>>
>>377682837
Bog Boss is the father of Solid Snake.
In MGSV you play as Venom Snake (Big Boss phantom and his former medic). MGSV also has the boy named Eli, who is a twin brother of Solid Snake. While there are some soldiers implanted with Big Boss genes, Solid Snake (David) and Liquid Snake (Eli) are his actual sons. EVA is their mother.

Big Boss and Solid Snake are father and son.

Big Boss in MG1(in the pic) is some other guy named Venom Snake
Big Boss in MG2 is the real deal

Just plat MGS1 and MGS3, and if you must MGS2 and MGS4. Then never touch the series again. Threads are garbage now.

People will tell you to play in in release order, but no one really cares and the story is shit anyways.
>>
Forgot to add: in GZ part of V you play as the real Big Boss.
See that horn in the comic you posted? It's Venom Snake not Big Boss. He is the endboss of the original MSX Metal Gear game.

If I must? I thought MGS2 was one of the best game of the franchise.

I I ever get into the franchise, I might consider playing all of the game in the release order of the first edition of each game, but not play specifically the first edition of each game.

For each game, which version should I play (consider that I don't have playstation, consoles, but can play on PC or even Nintendo consoles (including portables). And how playable are the MGS game when using mouse and keyboard?

So, if I play only one version of each game, which Should I play?
>>

Buy a PS3 and the Legacy Collection. It has all the games sans V and GZ. Play those two on PC.

It's a controversial one, you probably wouldn't like it that much on your first playthrough but many love it because it has a bit of a deeper narrative.
It doesn't play as well as the other games however.
>>
>>377684342
No, it isn't. You can forget about older MGS games on PC. 2 and 3 run like shit natively, and emulating them is near impossible. The PS HD collection versions are the definitive ones.

Portable Ops is garbage and non-canon anyway

Ignore him, 2 is worth playing, it's actually one of the only MGS games worth playing. What you should do is play only the following games and in release order.

MGS1 > MGS2 > MGS3

That's it. That's all you need to play. Everything else is fucking shit and should be ignored. The first 3 MGS games are the only good ones everything else is just fucking retarded.
>>
>>377685375
Just play them in the order of release, shit will all click together
>>
>>377685675
MGS4, V and MG Rising are also good games. Memes aside everyone is trying too hard to fit in by saying 4 and V are shit. Stop trying to fit in because /v/ has a shit taste, thus, isn't the right place to do so.
>>
>>377685631
>stop sealioning.
I don't think that's what sealioning is.

Anyway, the whole concept is weird to me. People who complain about sealioning are basically saying "you are not allowed to question what I say because I think you are inquiring in bad faith"

I can understand the very basic gist of it, but I think it open a loophole that is way to easy to exploit to deflect any kind of criticism.
>>
>>377685723
That's what I want, but I'd rather play only one version of each. If MGS3 and Sanke eater are the same game, I don't want to play them both, only one of them.
>>

>>

Yes I fucking do. Enough of that, the game is called Metal Gear Solid V: Ground Zeroes
>>
>>377682586
Metal Gear Solid 3: You play as Naked Snake, who becomes Big Boss at the end.

Peace Walker: You play as Big Boss

Metal Gear Solid V: You play as Venom Snake, a man who is the shadow of Big Boss.

Metal Gear: You play as the clone of Big Boss, Solid Snake. You kill Venom Snake.

Metal Gear 2: You play as Solid Snake and this time kill Big Boss for real (Spoiler: No you don't).

Metal Gear Solid: You play as Solid Snake. Big Boss's other clone turns up, Liquid Snake.

Metal Gear Solid 2: You play as Solid Snake and Raiden. Raiden isn't biologically connected to Snake but is the adoptive son of the other OTHER clone of Big Boss, Solidus Snake... who was also the President of the US. Something about memes.

Metal Gear Solid 4: You play as Old Snake, having aged artificially due to clone shenanigans. Also, turns out Big Boss wasn't dead and was surviving through medication and organ transplants from Liquid and Solidus' corpses. But then he dies anyway.

Metal Gear Rising: You play as Raiden because RULES OF NATURE! Memes, Jack.

See, it's simple.
>>

Wait a minute, so when David Hayter complained about not being the voice of Solid Snake in MGS5, he was actually complaining about not voicing Big Boss, who isn't solid Snake, so his complain were baseless?

Also, wasn't he replaced by Keith Sutherland because he complained publicly about the ending of MGS4?
>>
>>377686197
It can be both.
>>
>>377686346
Big Boss also appears in a couple of scenes in the game, but is also voiced by Sutherland.
>>
>>377686174

>Also, turns out Big Boss wasn't dead and was surviving through medication and organ transplants from Liquid and Solidus' corpses. But then he dies anyway.

remember that time they burned BB's corpse to access the patriots, only it wasnt really his, and the end of MGS2 didnt really happen, except parts of it did, except Solidus died in a completely unrelated way, then Liquid was actually just ocelot pretending to be retarded, then BB showed up out of nowhere because he'd just been chilling on his own for like 30 years?
>>
>>377686259
Portable Ops is non-canon (like Snake's Revenge, Ghost Babel and Acid) but you're right, I forgot Ground Zeroes.
>>
>>377686346
>>377686403
Oh wait, I misread your post.
Anyhow, he voiced both SS and BB in MGS1-3. Since SS is a clone of BB I guess they could get away with them having identical voices.
>>
>>377682837
You know, I'd think that no one could be this retarded, but I've actually had a couple of people ask me questions like this.
>>
>>377686346
It wasn't baseless because he voiced both Solid Snake and Big Boss.
>>
>>377686423
It is canon to some extent just like MGR. Kojima has stated it in the interview. When the game is not canon he just says it isn't like with Metal Gear Survive.
>>
>>377686470
BB is a loose term as of MGSV, because Naked Snake and Venom Snake are both BB. One is in MG1 and the other in MG2.
>>
>>377686451
Can you imagine if Hayter also voiced BB in MGS4? With the same shitty Old Snake voice, just in a dialogue with himself.
>>
>>377686423
>Portable Ops is non-canon
What made it non canon? and does it actually has plot points that are in contradiction with other games of the series?
>>
>>377682586
Plissken is Big Boss in MG1 and MG2.
The solid snake in MGS2 is decoy octopi.
The Big Boss in MGS3 is Jack Bowel.
The solid snake in MGS4 is decoy octopi.
The Big Boss in MGS4 is John McAffee.

Noob.

>>
>>377686637

>>
>>377686637
I think it has stuff involving Frank Jaeger, doesn't it?
Kojima said that he doesn't really consider it canon but sort of does.
Basically I think he's saying that he didn't really write it and is covering his ass to contradict the game's it later (although that's a moot point now)
>>
>>377686881
>(although that's a moot point now)
Now, now, it's always possible Kojima buy the franchise back to Konami, if the star align correctly, armagedon happens, humanity rebuild itself and he get in a lucky day...
>>
>>377682586
Why did you even come here and post this if you know literally fuck all about Metal Gear? What in the fuck?
>>
Lucky you OP, wish i could go through this series fresh again.
>>
>>377684543
It's incredibly simple if you actually play the games. You can tell within five seconds of starting all of these games when it takes place because it's very linear.

Metal Gear for the MSX up to MGS2 was a straight line. In MGS3 they decided to do a prequel game starring Big Boss decades earlier. Then MGS4 picked up where 2 left off, in the "present". Then Portable Ops and Peace Walker followed MGS3, back in the "past". Then Metal Gear Rising followed MGS4, present. Then MGSV followed Peace Walker, past.

All of Big Boss's games (MGS3, Peace Walker, MGSV) are a prequel series all set before the first Metal Gear.
>>
>>377687002
Maybe he did it exactly because he knew literally fuck all and wanted to learn? Not that you'd understand such motivation.

>>377685956
For any game with multiple releases, play the most recent release. Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater was the original release of MGS3. Then they released Metal Gear Solid 3: Subsistence, which is the exact same story but they added a bunch of stuff and fixed some camera problems, essentially a definitive edition. MGS2 was the same way, the first release was MGS2: Sons of Liberty, then they released MGS2: Substance, which was the definitive edition.

All of the collections, and the HD versions, and all of that, will be of the better versions (2:Substance and 3:Subsistence). You would have to track down the original PS2 discs to accidentally end up playing Sons of Liberty or Snake Eater.

Venom Snake is a guy who was tricked into thinking he was Big Boss. You can call him a memetic clone or whatever and it's technically true and part of the idea behind the game, but for explanatory purposes it's much simpler to just say he's an impostor.
>>
>>377687142

Shagohod worked pretty well, didn't it? They never ended up using it the way they were supposed to, Volgin was a retard and decided to chase some people down in a tank made for long range nuclear assaults. Sahelanthropus was the only one that explicitly didn't work.
>>
>>377687448
Peace Walker was so good it literally drowned itself to prevent nuclear war. Too pure for this world.

>he was actually complaining about not voicing Big Boss, who isn't solid Snake, so his complain were baseless?
Pretty much. He voiced younger Big Boss previously, but in MGS4 BB was voiced by Richard Doyle. It would make sense for him to sound different as he gets older, and I think it's important to differentiate him from Snake.

I mean, the fact that there are so many people like you out there who don't know the difference between them demonstrates why Big Boss and Solid Snake should have different voices. It's especially retarded when you consider the other clones (Liquid and Solidus) sound completely different. David Hayter should never have been Big Boss, and even though he was previously, there's no reason he should have expected to play him (or Venom for that matter) in V.

The point was that it needed an air strip instead of a silo. And given the threads it wasn't even that specific about the ground of the air strip. A cleared area of forest would do. Here you go.

Snake Eater and MGS3 are the same. It's not a version. The name of the game is MGS3: Snake Eater, BUT, there was a new version, almost like a 'DLC' from the physical media times, called MGS3:Subsistence, which has some tweaks, like 360° camera controls.

Hatter complained because he had voiced "Snake" for 15 years. By 'Snake', read Solid and Naked.

If you want to understand everything, play all the numbered games, and then read what happens in MG1 and 2 (MG1 and 2 are different games from MGS1 and 2).

You can play the Legacy Collection (that I think is available for both PS3 and X360).

So here's what you should play:

Metal Gear Solid
Metal Gear Solid 2
Metal Gear Solid 3: Subsistence
Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots
Metal Gear Solid V: Ground Zeroes
Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain

Then go to Metal Gear wiki and read about those:

Metal Gear
Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake
>>
>>377690084
Legacy also has Metal Gear 1 and 2.
>>
>>377687208
>It's set in the universe of Metal Gear

Ac!d is an alternate universe of the main MGS universe. "Solid Snake" (the character you play as in Ac!d 1) is a soldier who served previously served under "Roy Cambell", and "Solid Snake" previously encountered a Metal Gear, but there's no other connections between the Acid games and the main Metal Gear games, character or story wise. Obviously, the cards are full of references to the mainline MGS games and other Kojima games, but the characters don't consciously recognize the card's subjects as part of their own universe. "Snake" in Ac!d 2 is a clone of "Solid Snake" from Ac!d 1, and yet again Ac!d 2 doesn't involve characters or events from the main MGS games.

The big contradiction between Ac!d and the main MGS story is that Ac!d 1 occurs years after MGS4, when Solid Snake's advanced aging turns him into Old Snake, and he's supposed to die from FoxDie soon after, while Ac!d Snake only looks like he's in his thirties and totally healthy.

I was confused about this before i played the games, mostly because everyone is named some variation of Snake.
I also confused Big Boss and The Boss at first before i looked them up

Legacy Collection is PS3 only. MGS1,2,3,4, , PW, MGS: VR Missions, MG1 & MG2 (from the MGS3 menu), and the digital comics from the PSP.

PS3 and Xbox 360 has the Metal Gear Solid HD collection. MGS2,3, and Peace Walker, and MG1 & MG2 (from the MGS3 menu)

MGS4 is bad in every way imaginable faggot
The writing is some of the worst the series has seen, with even more forced and less natural sounding dialogue than any of the other games and people going off on stupid long monologues that say nothing for no reason, not to mention the endless retcons that technically make sense but are also dumb asspulls
The gameplay mechanic are solid but they're only actually present and utilized for two of the five acts, as act 3 locks you into a very tedious tailing mission and is then totally on rails, act 4 is nearly 100% void of human enemies and act 5 is a glorified walk down a couple of hallways and then an admittedly great boss fight
Finally the game constantly tells you things it should be showing or at least doing a better job of telling - the history of the Patriots essentially being disclosed in a rambling monologue by a man whose existence at that point in time is a retcon, the BB Corps backstory being told in shitty codec calls and so on and so forth. This issue is exacerbated by the ridiculous number of insanely long cutscenes, most of which do nothing to further anything but the frustration of anyone who actually liked the series before this entry
I haven't even played V yet because the direction the series took after 4 was so infuriatingly bad

And yeah this post is rambling and poorly written but that's because you don't deserve a well written response if you don't see what's wrong with MGS4
>>

>MGS: VR Missions

I like this post, anon. I feel mostly the same way.

I think Peace Walker was quite fun overall, which gave me hope that Kojima hadn't completely shat the bed, but then V was just Peace Walker but worse in almost every way so you're probably right not to play it.

I don't know why people are hoping somehow for a new Kojima MGS. He's clearly demonstrated he doesn't know what the fuck he's doing anymore. If Konami did take him back he'd just fuck it up again. Shit, MGR was probably a better MGS game than 4 or V. It might be a good thing if new devs with heads not quite so far up their own arses gave it a shot.
>>
>>377686346
>he was actually complaining about not voicing Big Boss, who isn't solid Snake, so his complain were baseless?

his complaints were baseless because he was complaining about not voicing a character that wasn't big boss

You're not wrong but i don't think you give chapter 4 enough credit. How about when "the best is yet to come" started playing as you enter shadow moses or the rex vs ray fight? Yeah, it's pandering but I'd say it makes chapter 3 worth it.

>>MGS: VR Missions
>What?
In Metal Gear Solid 1, the tutorial is a set of 10 "Virtual Reality" training missions. Konami later came out with a PS1 game, "Metal Gear Solid: VR Missions," which has a set of 300 challenge missions, and a few extra things to unlock. It was sold as a stand-alone disc in North America, while it was bundled with the main MGS1 game in Europe and Japan, and was included in the PC port.

>>the Metal Gear Solid HD collection. MGS2,3,
>Not MGS1?
Correct. HD Collection is for PS3 & Xbox 360, and they didn't want to rework MGS1 for the 360. If you get MGS1 as part of the Legacy Collection, it's actually the original PS1 version that runs via the PS3's internal PS1 emulator.
>>
>>377692339
>In Metal Gear Solid 1, the tutorial is a set of 10 "Virtual Reality" training missions.
Oh, okay, for a moment, I thought it was a literal VF goggle game.

>it's actually the original PS1 version that runs via the PS3's internal PS1 emulator.
Isn't the Gamecube Version better?
>>
>>377692150
Diehard fans will say no but they're not wrong since it wasn't completely finished and also the narrative style is completely different from 1-4. It's not a bad game, I honestly put around 200 hours into it.

But yeah the characters aren't as strong and the open world kinda ruins what makes it "metal gear".
>>
>>377691582
Well, lots of people think so, but lots of people thought 4 was good so I dunno man. It's got good core gameplay, really good, but the level and mission design is so bad you really only get to appreciate the game by dicking around and doing your own thing. The story is appalling and unfinished. I mean it's so bad that there's no final boss and the last mission is literally just a replay of the first level, complete with opening credit scenes and tutorials.

You spend like half the game waiting for shit to build or waiting for loading screens or travelling through empty areas that poorly mask the loading times. There's so much fucking waiting holy shit. There's almost none of the TECHNOLOGY the previous games were known for. Ocelot and Miller are both deeply bland and unlikable compared to previous versions of themselves. How do you even make Ocelot boring? Well, Kojima managed it here. They repeat themselves all the time as well on the radio which gets really annoying.

Venom is a shit protagonist who barely talks and has no notable personality which makes the shitty twist ending completely hollow and pointless. Mother base is an empty waste of time. Skull Face is such a laughably bad villain you actually start to feel embarrassed for him in the end. Code fucking Talker. Just everything about Code Talker.

God there's just so much I could complain about with V. It was such a gigantic waste of money and potential.
>>
>>377692498
>Isn't the GameCube Version better?
hahaha... NO. Do NOT play The Twin Snakes unless you're doing it for laughs and only after you complete the original MGS1.
TTS should be considered a joke remake and nothing else.
>>
>>377692498
>>it's actually the original PS1 version that runs via the PS3's internal PS1 emulator.
>Isn't the Gamecube Version better?

Debatable. It was made shortly after MGS2, so it has a similar level of graphics, but many people dislike the changes to some of the cutscenes, and importing some of MGS2's gameplay features into MGS1 made some parts really easy, such as hanging or being able to shoot in first-person view. Regardless, Konami wasn't going to pay to have someone port a Gamecube game to the PS3 when they could just include the PS1 version for very little cost.
>>
>>377682586
Apparently you've never played a Metal Gear game ever.

>>

Not to mention they almost completely change the music for the worse and the voice acting, while better quality is actually worse in delivery.
