A lot of times modern comics are about trying to reinvent these fucking 70 year old characters in modern scenarios. We've seen Superman that fights corrupt politicians, kid friendly superman, AMERICA FUCK YEAH superman that slaps a jap, ideal for humanity superman, hippie Superman, edgy Superman, strange fucking Blue and Red superman, All Star Superman etc. each of these heroes have been reinvented for each era. Batman doing NSA tier spying on people and dangers behind that didn't appear in stories before it became relevant, heroes just reflect modern times.

I kinda forgot about the really long running stuff like Gundam and Macross. I never watched them so I don't really know if they get super inconsistent or need to retcon stuff, I kinda imagined they just all took place in fairly separate time periods of the same universe.

The problem with western comics being that these superheroes deal with world ending events, or at least extremely disruptive events all the time, in the same universe as each other, but to keep the stakes high they just... don't overlap most the time. And when they do it's often in ways that contradict at least one of the hero's continuities. Like any problem in DC being beyond the Flash in comparison to some of the shit they've shown him capable of.
