It was "ENHANCED WITH PLAYONLINE" which meant that approximately 60% of the game wasn't discussed in the guide itself and all of the postgame content was written off in one paragraph.

The big issue was the shit servers, that were all located in japan, meaning even people with fairly high speed connections needed to spend half a fucking day downloading patches on FFXI. playonline was fine as a system itself, and could have easily been fixed in regards to it's extra login shit. It had mailing, it had minigames, it had extra info.

they tried to make it again with the FF portal on android and shit, but then did dumb shit like "if you buy the android FF version through this app for $5 more than on google play, you get a bunch of concept art! (also it's got no dawn of souls dungeon and no time labyrinth) Then they neutered the android version on google play to also not have that shit. Maybe licenses ran out I guess.

Either way, it's totally something people will buy into, especially for final fantasy, they just need to actually make it well.

You could just use the keywords, but there was, for a while, a registration tied to a book-specific serial. But by the time I got the book in like 2002 from a friend, I could just log in to my FFXI playonline and search shit up.

It's awful in every way. Class system is bad with it trying to do interesting with the system but 90% of the classes are either pointless or just a dumb upgrade and not worth being a actual class. And the class change becomes annoying since you are force to be certain classes over and over again. Like mages in the mini dungeon and needing to be certain classes against bosses. It doesn't become fun in any way. And the story has one interesting idea which is how world of Light/Dark keep switching from the bad guy. But they only hint of that idea and don't do anything with it.
