Negotiations still start off fairly random like 4, but they carry on throughout attempts.

Even if you fuse a demon, and use it for awhile, when trying to recruit the same demon from a battle later on it will remember that you bro'd it up to shit on people and join up with you.

The presentation, story, and atmosphere are a notable dip from IV, which is already a far cry from most of mainline.

Not to mention both IV & Final have tons of dialogue & text, and never lets the setting (which is conceptually one of the coolest alongside Nocturne & SJ) have a chance to breath or have any atmosphere.

Doi's character designs are even worse here where have the cast now looks even more generic anime than IV, despite the story actually going down an a darker more traditional SMT path than IV did.

Gameplay wise Final is best in the series, but god knows I don't want this to be presentation for the series now moving on

That's false though. The characters in Final are actually people and not Law and Chaos advocates that go completely 180. Asahi and Gaston get more character development than any previous mainline game and Krishna and YHVH are actually compelling villains. The scene from Anarchy when you strike down your friends is more memorable than the others games because of the time you spent with them. It not like the other games where the Law and Chaos hero's disagree with you once and then go haywire but you have no reason to care for them.
The atmosphere is also fantastic, since you really feel like a rookie at the beginning and even die at the hands of someone more powerful than you. Nanashi is a punk and he totally fits the post-apocalyptic landscape Tokyo Atlus was going for.

Nah. Lack of defensive stat just makes every fucking actual hard fight RNG infested as fuck and all about smirking and ending it super fucking fast so you don't get your team nuked atleast on War or above.

Its still good but i prefer Nocturne/DDS for press turn. Everything makes sense and you can plan a strategy for every battle that will work if you pull it off. Same can be said for most of SMT4A but i feel the RNG was less polished especially on War/Above.

The whole "I have my friends" stuff was really hammy and just really doesn't feel right in a SMT game.

I enjoyed that it was different tonally, since it made traversing all the old environments feel different and having short terms goals.

The AI is okay in all Megaten games and having the enemy get through drop on then dying to a random H/M spell is stupid as fuck. Salvation and Antichthon were broken in IV. Really Salvation has always been good. Final improved this by not allowing the player to spam it all time if they got fuck with ailments. Having certain skill status tied to smirked adds a lot of strategy to the game.

Yes it's all superior to the original IV. Never said or implied it was this perfect, gameplay defining change. But what I said about Apocalypse mode is true.

If it was added as a skill you wouldn't use it. For one, the pierce type smirks would be removed entirely, and Cold World insta-kill is in SJ and it doesn't change gameplay at all. The smirk effects are there for smile charge and not something you depend on for extra damage unless you go magic. Having smirk helps magic builds stay effective late game due to them having them ability to crit with it. Enemies late game usually always have Magon anyway so they're going to waste a press-turn to remove it.

Safety rooms in 5 are everywhere and there is zero tension. I played on Merciless mode first playthrough and never had trouble. Baton pass, tech attacks, are all way overpowered. Slink abilities killed the games difficultly. It's also the easiest game to max out all Slinks first playthrough.

It was trash in SJ. Using Mabufudyne was better because of higher damage output and less MP

If you had a +skill effect it would be broken or useless. You can't have hama insta-kill like in Final because that's just a lucky effect to the player. You can't give them pierce physical because that's too broken early game.

Well, now folks are coming off the backs of Persona 5, I can't really blame them. Hell the last area of P5 is just a straight-up taste of SMT.


Considering Strange Journey, & SMT IV all have these great settings, its unfortunate they are all still not much more than set dressings sometimes, and pretty ugly to boot. Hell a part of Nocturne's appeal is that they final made a fully 3D environment appropriate for an SMT game, so much so that Nocturne focuses more on its setting than having a plot.

I honestly can't agree with that. They animated every single one of the hundreds of demons in their game (albeit simply, but they are still there). Adding needless backsprites for Pokemon flavor would not only be pointless, but it would also erase how cool the front portraits are for demons you genuinely enjoy. Not to mention all you actually need to see in a fight is your enemies. What difference does it make to note that there's a drawing of a oil barrel in the background versus a 3D model of one?

The main reason Atlus, SE, and NIS are so into the Switch right now is because they believe traditional turnbased RPGs aren't popular on home consoles but want to make them for more powerful systems.

Because art for the enemies is more simple feedback than reading names off a list? If I see a picture of two Oni and a Leanan Sidhe, I automatically know how to deal with them. If I have to read Oni HP ??? Oni HP ??? Leanan Sidhe ???, it's trickier to figure out. And if I can note certain common trends (flying enemies/evil spirit enemies/etc.), I can typically guess a weakpoint significantly easier.

Yes, because the tiny movements are simple enough that they either look "active" when they are fully mobile or "inactive" when they are frozen/sleep/etc, and I can still get the Kaneko/Doi art I enjoy without losing it all for the sake of adapting only a fraction of them into 3D models.

If you want to know where we stand, the Switch is closer to the Xbone in terms of hardware than it is to last gen especially if you optimize well, and the engine they're using is UE4 which also runs extremely well on the system from what I've seen.
So you could expect 1080p 30fps as a possibility docked considering that Atlus for sure wont have a terribly taxing game.

Nothing in any SMT/Megaten comes close to how well the gameplay in IVA was done.

Bosses were designed to fight the buff/debuff war with you, each of them felt unique and challenging. Nothing really broke the game/system, as evidenced by the fact that Stephen is arguably the hardest superboss in any Megaten and he plays totally fair.

If you seriously have a problem with the party members, get over yourself you fucking edgelord. Only Nozomi was annoying. Some characters like Toki really needed more development, but at the end of the day the story was all about you and Dagda. Whether you believe in his new universe or want to save the current one, that's your choice.

I just finished it yesterday. I prefer it to IV, but I don't think it's the best in the series. The combat is great, the music is great, even if a lot of it's re-used, and Dagda is cool, but the cast and atmosphere were really quite bad in my opinion. I don't think IV had a great atmosphere or cast either, but it was still a mark on IV:A that brought it down for me. The dungeons were also pretty forgettable, not bad, but not notable. I never found myself wanting to explore them. I did like a lot of the new design and redesign though, I suppose YHVH's second form was a step down from his first, but it's hard to beat the big golden head. I didn't really like either of the endings as well.

I'm currently playing SJ and enjoying it a lot, I tried Nocturne but I dropped it shortly after Matador fight.
I think the game just nailed some general design elements. First of all it has a pretty good balance of plot/dialogue and plain dungeon crawling, in case of Nocturne I felt there was too much dungeon crawling and the small tidbits of dialogue dumped too much alien terms like the Amala labyrinth, manikin, kagutshuchi etc. Second of all it has some QoL stuff that I can really appreciate such as being able to fuse anywhere, demon conversations potentially not costing a turn by default and backtracking to heal being possible, but not encouraged too much. Then there is the way you initially can't see the enemy demons and demon sources giving you some incentive to stick with them that prolonges the novelty and hoarding aspects of the game.
I do agree with your criticism in regards of the mechanics though.

I don't know, it's been reported and apparently ATLUS USA have asked Sony to try and fix it because the issue is with the PS3 emulator, not the game, and they just haven't done so. There's probably not enough people who care about whether or not the game is working for them to bother putting in the effort. DDS is a little busted too, the audio is wildly out sync with the visuals in cutscenes.

You only have 2 dungeons lefts. You can still betray your friends. If you pick up the game again, try to tell everyone to fuck off when fighting against Odin you'll know when.

The final is also where the dtory gets very good and where you finally free yourself of those useless bonds.

Why I put the game off for so long, I don't know. My only problem now is I fucked up a fusion and accidentally took Mahama instead of Focus on another physical attacker I fused. Those menus blend in after a while trying to get the right skills to show.

I visualfag a lot when it comes to JRPGs but I love SMTIV because of the sheer variety of demons sprites allow the game to have. The series main appeal to me are the demon designs.

My first guess is that it's too obvious he's Akira's reincarnation, but I remember people speculating that ever since the very first image of Nanashi came out. I think it's the latter. Apoc in general has a lot of 'growing up and becoming your own person' themes and for someone who looks old and bold enough to know what he wants to do in life it just would feel out of place.

I do like the concept design better but the new design fits Apoc perfectly.

I remember the huge backlash from hindus when they saw krishna was brown - imagine it if he was white, kek. But I dunno, I like what we got better.
