D1 Flonne and D1 Etna had a lot of growth, I personally really like the budding relationship between Etna and Laharl.
DD2 was a mess, but Flonne was really good in it, she played the role of team mom, and you could tell she was taking the fact that she was no longer an angel and banished from Celestia pretty hard. I like how she switched personalities from a goofy otaku to a serious supporting role when things got serious, for example when she held back Laharl from wiping Sicily off the face of the planet when she first appeared.
My overall favorite is probably Yukimaru though, she has a nice character arc and her speech to Fubuki at the end of the game really made me take a shine to her. Too bad she's totally overshadowed, even in her own game.
Oh, but this is one of THOSE Disgaea threads, m-muh dick says I'm not really attracted to any Disgaea girl in particular.

I didn't like disgaea 1 very much. I like SRPGs where you have a relatively fixed party and each map presents challenges you need to overcome. I could see that disgaea 1 sorta tried to do that by having some geosphere gimmicks and stuff but I felt like the party composition and other stuff were insignificant factors compared to level; by stacking up enemies and using the triple exp bill I made Laharl overpowered.

Are the later disgaea games worth playing for story mode alone (no postgame, no item world, no repeating maps, etc)?

Rozalin. Even if she's not necessarily the best female character, which is subjective anyway, she is the best heroine.

She is the most tied to the plot of any of the games. She has a personal connection with the villain. Her reveal was actually surprising. Her romance isn't just teased and hinted at. Her mechanics update as she bonds with Adell. She develops from a spoiled brat to a motherly hero who wants to protect her little ones. She's just a great character all around. She also easily one of the most powerful characters in the series. She's arguably even more powerful than Adell.

It has the worst cast in the series and a story that's about as weak as DD2's.
Gameplay is hit or miss, it feels nice to play but don't expect it to last nearly as long as any of the other games. It just doesn't have a whole lot of content period and pretty much all the mechanics they added and changes they made are pretty much all about simplifying things and cutting down the time you spend grinding, so you can expect to be ready for the hardest fights in the game (LoC Baal) in no time at all.

Oh, just play through the story then and don't do the postgame, the numbers are pretty tame there.

If you're playing Disgaea 1, save before you enter the Item World for the first time, because a lack of Mr Gency Exits means you'll have to do 10 stages back to back. Also, skip Item World stages where possible in the beginning, you're really not going to want to fight the 100+ enemies it takes to get to the end when you're not adequately prepared. I'd honestly suggest you save after every single map so you don't get set back really far. Also, don't waste healing items all willy-nilly, get some kind of healer in the early game because their TP consumption can get you added bonuses when you take them to the hospital.

I'd say the biggest thing is have fun,
the game rewards constantly exploring mechanics, so even if you feel like you need to grind, or if you'd rather be strategic, just play it your way. There's "optimal" styles in the ultra-postgame, but by the time you've reached there, you're going to know everything you want out of the game anyways.

Just remember that needing to grind to be Disgaea's story is a myth, if an enemy seems unbeatable, look to see if there are any Geo Panels powering them up and destroy the pyramid.
Also don't bloat your party, try to have a team of 5 units and slowly upgrade that to a max of like, 7 or 8.

About to enter the world of Disgaea. Which games should I try? I heard 1,4 and 5 are alright.

they are all aright mechanically, gameplay is already good in 1, it just gets better with each iteration
Problem is characters and stories, aside of DD2 being shit and D1 being good - everything else is up to taste.
I'd say start with 1st game - PC or PSP version, and then proceed further down the releases.
Tho you can always disregard that and start with 5, if you can deal with some mechanics downgrades for earlier games

The only one not really worth playing is DD2 and even that has its merits.
Personally I'd rank them something like D4>D1>D2>D5=D3>DD2 but opinions.

D1 has great charas/plot but at the point pretty outdated gameplay
D2 has okay charas/plot with solid and not overly complicated gameplay
D3 has shoddy charas/plot with good but slightly complicated gameplay
D4 has great charas/plot with overall the best gameplay but has some systems that are slightly complicated
DD2 has terrible charas/plot with okay gameplay but is liable to set your PS3 on fire
D5 has terrible charas/plot with good and very easy to get into gameplay

Also thinking about it again I'd honestly put D2 and D3 roughly equal, I think their faults kinda balance each other out. D5 is most definitely below the two for me though, it's just way too simplistic and boring in absolutely everything it does, both story and mechanics wise.

As far I know they certainly patched overheating issue, game is still glitchy, I got a freeze during tutorial, but then some anons recommended me to double load game trick, since then there were no issues for 80ish hours
What faults of D3 aside of PS3 release being meh so they fixed that in D3 Vita? I only heard about PS3 release being weird, but I played only Vita version. Seemed great for me.
Yet to play D5, can't comment on that.
