Origin gave me a free copy of the Sims 2 complete collection. It doesn't work. Boots up with zero neighborhoods to build in, and thus no way to create sims or edit because the town maps are all mysteriously missing.

i pretty much still stick with 2 whenever i get the itch to play Sims. the world aspects of 3 felt like they never lived up to the hype. everything looked like shit, especially the people, and it still doesn't run smoothly even on top end modern systems. most of the expansions were crap too.

sims 4 isn't bad. it's just nothing special. it at least has some modern qol changes without the performance and aesthetic problems of 3. it's hard to explain, but it's missing the little things that made Sim games magical. that inherent cheekiness, and the little things like satellites randomly crushing your sims or learning how to teleport if you meditated long enough. i want to like it, because it's like they mechanically copied what a sim sequel should be... but somehow missed the soul

there are objectives -- you unlock new buildings and features as your town grows in population, it's pretty goal-oriented. Once you've unlocked everything it's arguably fully sandbox, but there's money management and unlocks to keep you going objective-wise.
