I just watched Twin Peaks and found out that literally the entire Persona series is ripped off from it.
ALL of it, besides the Japan stuff.
Should David Lynch sue or something?
Japs have been ripping of Twin Peaks for decades m8.
if he gave a shit deadly premonition would have been fucked
>>377635626
Twin Peaks is popular in Japan.
>>377635626
In what? never watched Twin Peaks.
>>377635626
Lynch has had an influence on pretty much every artist working in the last 30 years.
>>377636121
>has played Persona
>hasn't watched Twin Peaks
What is wrong with you son?
>>377636180
That's different than a ripoff. at what point does it stop being an homage
OoT was inspired by twin peaks also
>>377635626
Yeah, dude, remember that time you make a cup of joe for your care taker in Persona 5 and he says "You know. This is, excuse me, a damn fine cup of coffee."?
What a rip.
video games always steal shit from other mediums.
It's why Solid Snake was Snake Pliskin, Link was Peter Pan and half of DOOM's soundtrack was copied from a bunch of other trash metal songs.
>Japan liked Twin Peaks
Get out of town.
The Velvet Room is nothing like the Red Room.
The Velvet Room is blue.
>>377636121
They aren't similar at all.
>>377636285
I don't think any video game in history has been anything other than an homage to its creator's influences.
Even games considered the high art of the medium are basically rip-offs of films or books, like MGS for instance.
But then again nothing is original. Everything that is created is just an expression of the creator's influences.
Plagiarism is a different matter of course.
>>377635626
It's freaking Twin Peaks. Saying "X ripped Twin Peaks" is like saying "X ripped the Twilight Zone". It invented and perfected so many tropes that you want your story to look like Twin Peaks. Look at Life Is Strange for example.
>>377636535
You've got to be joking. from the villains to the plot points and themes, it's all "borrowed". The series continues to use entire characters from Twin Peaks.
because japs can't write a good story on their own.
actually persona has shit stories anyway.
>>377636650
You keep saying this, but you have yet to name one similarity between persona and twin peaks.
No one is going to point out the obvious
This just in. Sources say, "Nothing is original anymore, and everyone can just steal any work and change it slightly and claim it as their own." More news at decades ago.
In other news. OP continues to be a fag shocking literally no one whatsoever.
>>377636809
Someone already did.
>>377635946
>>377636809
Goddamn you, I was just about to post that.
>>377636650
Why are you so assblasted?
David Lynch clearly doesn't give a shit neither should you.
>>377636571
>mgs
>high art
Jesus fucking Christ what an alarmingly sad thought that is.
>>377636717
that was my first post.
>>377637034
According to gamers, it is.
>>377636650
Give fucking examples. The only villain similarity I can think of is how the feed on the emotions of people which isn't unique to Twin Peaks.
>>377635626
Most creative stuff out of Japan, hell everywhere is somebody taking the stuff they like, throwing it into a blender, and then mixing in their own weird into it and unleashing it onto the world.
What makes something good is execution.
Its fucking easy to draw the line of incestuous inspiration from creator to creator, especially in Japan, where they take "imitation is the sincerest form of flattery" to be much more literal. Jesus, Nocturne took the kid and old lady from Fire Walk With Me.
OP, welcome to literally fucking everything on earth, stop looking for original things to like, and just like things for what they are.
>>377637083
Oh man, I thought it was weird when Igor kept saying that the gum I like is going to come back in style
>>377637083
>holy fuck a room with a guy in it
>in a game!
It's fucking nothing.
>>377636671
If you want a good story go read a book or watch a movie.
Beat Alan Wake last night, thought it was a pretty good game.
>>377637494
Fuck you. What else would I play a game for? Games are about watching a movie with shallow game mechanic features so you can focus better.
>>377637206
The thing about Lynch is is that he is one of the last artists where it's actually quite hard and takes a bit of effort to work out what his influences are and how they've influenced his work.
If you look deep enough you can find links, but he was original enough that it's still obscured enough that he seems very unique. There are obvious things like noir movies and the work of the surrealists that have had an influence on him, but the way he repurposes those inputs is very singular.
Unfortunately nowadays you can see the influences of most artist's work almost immediately.
>>377638059
Not every artist needs to be an experimentalist pushing it forward dramatically. Only the greatest can do that, and it gets harder to innovate over time. Some people are better at refining existing styles, and there is nothing wrong with that.
>>377635626
I hear the 2nd season of TP is not as good as the first and has a shitload of filler, is that true?
>>377638416
Is has some good moments, but it's mostly a fucking disaster. You should watch it just to be in the know for season 3. You'll definitely need to see FWWM
>>377638416
eh kinda
The finale is great though and Season 2 makes the transition to how fucked Fire Walk With Me is.
>>377638416
Yes, if you plan on watching it, it's extremely obvious when the filler will start.
You should still watch it, the finale is a fucking amazing pay off.
>>377638275
Yep I agree. I was just pointing out that Lynch was one of the last I can think of that counts as someone who changes the game.
Of course they have the benefit of being born in the time they were, when room for innovation was available and also encouraged.
yfw season 3 tonight
>>377638416
First half of season 2 is great
>>377638416
Got my BD set yesterday, wanted to see it for a long time since I really loved Mulholland Drive and Eraserhead. Any first reviews on S3 that was screened in Cannes?
>>377635626
Well, whole Persona series is actually a rip-off of Jojo if you want to put it this way. And P4 is blatantly "inspired" by part 4 (rural town, slice of life, retarded detective teens, serial killer).
>>377635626
I just started watching it literally yesterday, that atmosphere man, I only watched 2 episodes and I already wanna move to a small northern town and be comfy forever.
>>377638998I think OP made this thread just as an excuse to talk about Twin Peaks on /v/.
>>377637206
Japan has a stronger tradition of intertexuality. Many classic plays will actually lift their stories straight from the Manyoshu or other sources. Poems would be continuously linked to one another and reference one another. You have to well versed in the classics to get a lot of this stuff. Even with the beginning of film, a lot of stuff were direct copies of one another. Originality is less valued in Japan than in the west, at least when talking about historic tradition. These days with plagiarism laws you're not going to find that same level of stuff anymore, but even in the doujinshi scene you can see the sort of tolerant attitude they take with people using other people's creations.
>>377638416
After Episode 7 or 8 there's a big drop, but there's still some redeemable moments. Just know it gets hard to watch at times.
If all else fails, fast-foward through James' scenes.
>>377638998
First impressions for season 3.

Have nothing against it. /tv/ can shitpost about Kynch being too mainstream and plebish while not even watching basic Czech or Japanese New Wave.
TP is still best show to date, along with Miami Vice. Mann and Lynch are both very important figures in cinema.
To be honest I was sad at first that Lynch quits filmmaking, but looking at Dario Argento I guess it's better to quit when you feel you have nothing to offer anymore than spoil your name by filming literal shit. Jodorowsky did the same and it worked great for him.
>>377639427
>Though advertised as a “new season” of Twin Peaks, these episodes felt more like a revival of ALL of David Lynch’s work. Parts of it felt very Blue Velvet and Lost Highway, with some imagery from Eraserhead mixed in.
FUCKING YES. I always love those restrospective goodbye-loveletters to both fans and yourself as director.
>>377639660
Lynch is a fucking weird cat.
Dude swears off movies and most television because he thinks there trash but becomes a recurring character on The Cleveland show.
>>377636480
Why did this show have to end so terribly
>>377640125
Blame ABC
>>377640243
What does ABC have to do with Anime
>>377640329
Thought you were talking about Twin Peaks
>tfw you will never have hair as good as based Lynch
Jarmush and Cronenberg are second and third place in best hair category though.
>>377639832
i can think of a reason
>>377637494
>modern books
>modern movies
Top zozzle
>>377639832
>seth mcfarlane gigglesquees like a horny fangirl up to him and dotes on him, finally asks him to be in his show
>Lynch, who is not doing absolute shit at this time decides "fuck it, why not"
>>377640642
You know nothing about Lynch, but even if you did, how much money do you think he really got for that?
>want to make another off topic thread on /v/
>don't want to stay on /tv/
Fuck off. I can only report so many times today before I get burnt out by it all.
>>377640969
>generalizing
I bet you are one of those "modern music is shit"-neckbeards right? There's ton of writers and directors across whole world who make something each year. It may not be as good by quantity standards, but there's still good stuff.
