I sort-of agree, it doesn't have the strongest gameplay, but the gameplay is serviceable, and isn't the appeal. The appeal is the randomization and challenging yourself, as well as the random advancement your character undergoes; slightly changing the gameplay and game each time.

Discovering items, it's like playing a gatcha machine that gives powerups, that's the fun behind it, it's hard to explain but that's it.
Note that the first playthroughs are boring as fuck because they're slow and have shit items, despite what spergs will tell you I think it's better if you get a 100% save.

Did you play Rebirth? The OG Binding of Isaac might feel like a browser game because it's made in Flash.

Rebirth is completely smooth and can run at 60fps on a toaster.

It's banging your head against a wall until you find the wall's weak spot and can break it consistently in one or two smacks. It's storming the beaches of Normandy, losing soldier after soldier, until you get a foothold and can kick some Nazi ass.

You don't start a round of Isaac expecting to beat it, especially the first few dozen times. You Leroy Jenkins your way through, learning more about the game, over and over again. Every time you learn more about enemy patterns, how to avoid attacks, what items synergize well, and what items don't work well with each other.

There's a bell curve to the dice rolls. A small amount that are very good or very poor, but the majority will be in the center bulge of the bell. You got some really good items early that make the game trivially easy? Well good for you. Accidentally picked up Ipecac and boomerang tears or Bob's Brain? No problem, starting over is quick and painless.

If the core gameplay of twin stick shooting is not engaging to you, you are not going to like it whether or not the RNG factor is there. Also, use a controller.

The appeal is getting good or interesting item combinations. The core gameplay was never good and edmund """balances""" it under the false impression that people play it because it's "hard" despite pretty much every encounter being braindead shit. The only hard part of the game is not running out of patience against the HP bloat.

The reason its so popular is because it was the first to do the roguelite thing and also remains one of the only roguelites to focus on stacking passives upgrades, rather than swapping out for different weapons ie gungeon.

I feel like a huge hurdle is all the items. I have no idea what they are until I pick them up. And even then most of the time I still don't know what they are.

Am I supposed to repeat the same map until I beat it? Or is it best to play a new map every time?
