When something is a hobby with passion and not a slavework in a shitty industry, it can come with a better result.
If you think all mods are bad, you only look to the shitty ones and never bothered to explore for something better in a scene that have existed for years in many, many games.
The fact that you mentioned mods becoming standalone games only hurted your own arguement by highlighting mods having a certain spotlight in making games.

Like what? Oscuro's Overhaul for oblivion? It fucked the game more than it improved it.
Also theres no such thing for Skyrim.The game cannot be saved.
The closest thing that comes to mind for Morrowind is MGSO which literally is a collection of 10000 different mods that manage to fuck things up even more when combined but at least makes it look pretty.

As for Doom,these total conversions arent woth more than a giggle. If i wanted to play a game with pirates id play a game with pirates not Doom wearing a Halloween costume
