Guys, i was working on a Hotline Miami fan game, and really felt motivated to make it a good one since the devs themselves gave me their blessings

But, i recently came into contact with the video game known as Persona 5, and i instantly fell in love. Thats when i decided i would stare at pictures and assets from Persona 5, and even 4, while mimicking them on to paper. I only looked at the pictures while drawing, i DID NOT trace it, at all, none of that.

I also decided to drop all the Hotline Miami stuff i had included, and decided to replace it all with Persona mechanics and gameplay gimicks. Mementos, Personas, and even Social Links. You can't copyright words and phrases, and its totally different. Im also setting the stage with teenagers going through teenage problems and struggles, thats not really copyrighted or anything, so im free to use it.

Recognition is not really the basis for if it should be legal or not, though. Take song sampling for example. Totally legal, even if you can tell which original song the material was sampled from, under the stipulation that the new song has to be transformative. You can use other art in your art without violating any copyright law, you just have to significantly transform it.

Whether making it a silhouette is transformative is the question, and I'd say it is. He has removed the entire work except for its outline. That's significant, in my opinion.

That's not to defend if it's RIGHT or not, of course. I think it's a shitty thing to do and he should be rightly judged as a lazy hack.

Dude gets all the encouragement he needs from the $60k a year he makes in patreon, and all the dedicated fans that follow and watch his every stream and cheer him on daily. He's not blocked from getting the game done in any way shape or form, he makes a middle class income doing this. It's still hardly even started after like two years.
