Nah. Most of the time I just get good with no real effort, just like in real life. It's funny to play with people, who have thousands of hours, but I'm still better or at least on par with them, even tho I have like <50 hours played.

I even got into a med school on my first try with no real effort, when other people spend years trying to get inside :^). At first I thought about engineering, but that shit doesn't pay well and is full of autists.

Life's unfair, isn't it?
>>
>>377599797
Of course someone who doesn't try would actually think people just have magic talent rather than a better aptitude for learning.

I love the irony that the artist is neither skilled nor talented at drawing. You can tell by the smug eyes in the first panel that he thinks he's the shit.
>>
>>377599797
If you're talented at something you gain skill quicker in that field and have a higher ceiling than others, you couldn't just start on a whim and be as good as someone who's practiced in that field.

i suck at vidya
it hurts to admit it but i just suck
I never once had fun in a multi-player game because I always felt like people on the opposite team were just better than me, whenever I win it's just obvious that my teammates carried me and I had no value to the team.
I tried shooters, MOBAs, Fighting Games, Grand Strategy, I always end up getting my ass handed to me by the lowest skill level goons in the online matchmaking.

I never really thought about it but maybe there's actually something wrong with me, I've been playing online games for like, 10 years, and never got good in one of them even once.
>>

That feel
I can beat some of the harder single player games, but at multi player I suck balls.
I play with someone who's just absurdly good at anything they pick up, and it's really frustrating when I die and he carries me and keeps telling me I'm not bad just unlucky to be nice.

There's absolutely no magical loss or ability at 24. You're just far more stressed and are far more tired from work/school and something bad is always on the back or your mind so you can't concentrate like you used to
>>
```Talent``` is just a different name for either a) being good at learning things efficiently and always being critical of your own work, or b) having several years of learning behind you that didn't feel like practice because you did it for fun and not explicitly to practice.
I can pick up essentially any game and get extremely good at it in a very short time, but that's only because I've spent 80% of my life regularly playing video games.
Depends on your values. Some people value money, so skills that can make them money are useful to them. Some people value making a positive impact in the world, so skills that help other people are useful to them. Not really sure what values you'd need to have to make vidya useful. At best you can be completely nihilistic and say that nothing is useful, so vidya is no less worthwhile than anything else.
I'm pretty sure your reflexes and general attentiveness do deteriorate as you age, and someone who is 28 like me will not be as twitchy as someone who is 16. The difference might be negligible anywhere else, but in videogames where fractions of seconds can decide who gets shot first, it matters.
I'm gonna try my luck at EVO this year, just finished making reservations for my stay and flight yesterday. I'm gonna have to learn that optimal wolf brake corner before then and fix my shitty oki and defences somewhat.
I'll probably drown in pools like a chump, but it'll be a great experience, I'm sure.
Sorry, Anon, but these "chads" don't go to med school. They are just as shit-tier as most of the people on this planet.
If someone's success manages to create this kind of a reaction, then shouldn't that be a warning sign for the person suffering from this critical reaction? :^)
It's fun to be so good, that it alone creates butthurt around other people.
What pain? I'm interning at Boeing right now with high prospects of getting to work there after graduation. Getting paid too. I'm currently 5725 MMR in Dota, and dip in and out of master league in legacy of the void since I don't have time to play as much, but at one point a fair bit of time ago I was in gm for a little. I've played SF4 on a competitive level at events before and won.
I bet you're just some loser who has a positive win ratio in league of legends in gold league or some other pathetic shit like that and think you're amazing. Sad.
>>
Kinda, but that's because I like the process of exploring game mechanics. It may be weird, but I enjoy stuff like training mode in fighting games, or free building in RTS games, where I can look at all the available tools. For that reason I absolutely love The Last Remnant, that game is so full of hidden mechanics you play for hundreds of hours and you'll still be finding new things in it.
Only tedious kind of training I do is in WoW. As DPS class I spend long time at the mannequins trying out various builds and equipment to maximize my damage, because I don't want to let my guild down with bad performance.
But that's completely subjective. If someone finds vidya useful, because of hedonistic reasons, then it isn't useless or wrong. If something so simple gives you pleasure, then shouldn't you do it? Assuming doing "it" doesn't consume your life and make you even more miserable in the end.
Results = Talent X Effort
Talent alone doesn't make you good at anything. It just means you have an easier time getting good at things.
>>377601157
The way I see it, we are born blank, but every little thing that we experience leaves some sort of imprint on us. From the very moment a human is born he absorbs information around him, which forms his mind processes and ways of thinking that may give him advantage in specific fields. And this is what creates perceived talent: a person whose mind was formed in a way that gives him advantage in something that he didn't intentionally pursue.
If reflexes go that much down how are there basketball players and boxers in their forties? Do they have no need for reflexes? Then again shooter players may need just that good reflexes, not strategy players though.
Imho talent is an ultimate ability to produce extraordinary work and you can't be sure that you are not talented until your last breath.
I used to train a lot when I played smash bros 3ds and skullgirls. Livestreamed tournaments (not at actual venues, just using challonge with like a £10 prize for the winner) really helped me get better at skullgirls. In my first tournament I got completely destroyed, but in the last one I played before quitting I managed to get into the finals.
I was on the verge of buying a really expensive arcade stick at one point. Stopping taking games so seriously was one of the best decisions I ever made
Making comics about how happy you are about your wonderful life is only going to be relatable for the kinds of people who don't need distractions like webcomics to get them through the day.
So if you want to make comics that your audience can relate to, it needs to be about stress, depression, procrastination, loneliness, self-doubt, low self-esteem, etc. Anything negative that most people experience.
Either that or actually be funny. But there are no legitimately funny people making webcomics.
Even if you're talented, you still need to work hard. Everyone is talented at something, but to achieve growth, there is no way around work.
You can be talented at drawing and sports or whatever all you want, if you don't do it you dun goofed.
Image in OP is made by an envious lazy person, because it's always easier to blame others, instead of himself. He should see those talents as guidance and teachers instead, he would achieve greater work, i bet you.
I've read that thanks to shitty circumstances early 20th centure jewish people were forced into making a good work ethic and that made them force their kids into work ethic which made their kids into successful lawyers and doctors.
Basically every situation can be turned around, every story can be turned into something that is positive for the individual. "Everything happens for a reason" is legit because everything is a story and there are different stories and you can turn whatever the fuck into whatever the fuck.
tl;dr yes from one perspective paula's situation is truly shit but the beauty of humans is that when we become self-aware we can look at stuff from different perspective and finding a perspective that works for them is a duty that every individual owes themselves.
I agree that hard work is extremely important but you are denying the role talent plays. This graph is dumb. Talent isn't a card that says you start 20 spaces ahead, it's getting three extra dice to roll with. Talent allows you to progress faster and easier than your rivals and reach certain heights others may not be capable of. In almost anything, in terms of being best of the best (or close to it), talent is the decider.
In terms of being good (or even great) at something, it's hard work, but once you start talking about perfection and being the best talent alone will make the difference.
Just because I'm discussing this doesn't mean I'm hating on anyone or not working on myself.
I think it's important to acknowledge that talent and luck are very important factors (even more, in many fields) because otherwise it feeds into the idea that people have total control over their lives and that everything that happens to people is their fault 100% of the time.
>>
>>377604264
That's not really what I was arguing for though
Striving for perfection is a whole other beast than striving to improve yourself.
The comic portrays Owltard thinking himself impressive for reaching a level of competency that isn't hard for some with talent to reach, so he blames his lack thereof instead of trying to go beyond his peak, which is comparatively low and amateurish.
Were he to apply himself and quit beating himself with a wet rag instead of breaking himself over the wheel, maybe he's be able to see that talent isn't as huge a matter as he seems to think.
Like I said, I don't think you're doing that but this is the very real argument many people use to justify why they suck a bag of cocks when they see someone better. Also yes, luck and talent do have factors in someones life but to pretend most people can't change their lives, skill levels, and betterment in life within the first world is preposterous. Most people can become successful through hard work and as such you should also be mindful to not give snowflakes and lazy individuals grounds to complain about talent. It is a nuanced street and there are arguments for both sides and I hope you realize that.
While the comic is right about things adding up, there is no point in blaming Richard Rich for it. Only a retarded person would turn down a job because "I didn't work hard for it".
All these comics come of as trying to get Richard down instead of trying to push Paula up. I'm poor, my family is poor, I'm working hard to finish college. I know what Paula is going through. But I don't blame Richard for being lucky. That's how life works and will always work unless we magically get a working communist system which won't happen.
Instead of worrying about talent and hard work think of the ways how to make hard work less hard.
Like don't hate on yourself for being shit, treat exploring stuff as challenges and not as evidence of you being shit, use pomadoro technique and reward yourself with small treats, concentrate on what you are curious in the area of attempting mastery right now instead of forcing the aspect of it you are not super interesting right now, break what you have to do in smaller parts so that you gain dophamine boosts more often, also start with small achievable goals to get your day going etc. etc. Also as a sidenote watch educational vids on x1,5-2, usually aside from obvious time cut makes them more engaging
Why not? If most people aren't that interested in some aspect of your identity, chances are it's not all that important and you're just focusing too much on it. If I chatted a lot about my identity to everyone I met, only to learn later that no one cared enough to remember all the details, it would be quite reasonably of me to assume that all those details aren't very interesting, not that everyone else are interested in the wrong things. Hell, maybe they are, but I'd get nowhere with that worldview. People would assume I'm a sperg.
This is what people actually believe after having played a game for 100 hours, getting their asses ravaged by people who have played for 1000 hours
There is no innate "talent" that magically makes you get to know the maps in a shooter, how to position yourself smartly, which weapons to choose, there is no magic talent that automatically ingraines street fighter combos into your muscle memory and tells you when to wakeup reversal and when not to, no talent that makes you know which are strong item builds and skill orders depending on the situation in a moba. It's practice, practice, practice putting yourself into the situations again and again and again until it sticks, and the more you do it, the larger your pool of knowledge to draw from grows. And that's all there is to it.
Its not even about how hard you work or talent, its about luck. Meeting the right person while walking your dog and that dog takes a shit which makes you pause for a minute and you run into them can change your entire life. Someone who works hard and is genuinely good at whatever they do can be unsuccessful simply by not knowing the right people or being in the right place at the right time. Life is a fuck.
If it wasnt for animu I would never have known the wonders of thighhigh socks+short skirts. Loads of people have a fetish for pantyhoses. But nylons were only invented around the 50s-60s. Many generations of men have died without knowing nylons existed, much less it did things to their dick they never knew. What if I miss out of my biggest fetish since the object my dick longs for hasnt been discovered/invented yet? It is truly a terrifying thought
Cocksucking doesn't have a skillset that is shared with other disciplines, so what I've found is that unlike most things, it's mostly based on practice.
I think that "talent" is just you having a headstart at some of the fundamental skills required for the task at hand because you practiced them somewhere else, when you get to the basics, there's actually a good amount of crossover skills amongsts similar disciplines like sports or musical performances.
Cocksucking doesn't, moving your tongue to please another man isn't really a popular skill, shared by many disciplines.
Connections are insanely important, it's almost impossible to get a work in the vast majority of businesses unless you already know someone working there who can vouch for you.
One of the better ways to get around this if you don't have the social skills to just show up at a job opening and advertise yourself is to study something that includes a period of practical practice work, that's how I got my current job after a month of work without pay. Just show you are making an effort and you'll instantly have a foot through the door.
talent is more like an additional factor you add to your hard work. let's say average talent means you multiply your hard work by 1.00 and below average talent means you only multiply by 0.5 so you would need twice the amount of time to reach the same level. Someone who is highly talented might have a multiplier of 2.00 or so if he is really genetically gifted.
But I think most of it is not just investing time it's actually wanting to improve. I mean how many people do you know that go to the gym for YEARS and make 0 progress ? I see quite a few and then there are guys that bench 225lbs for reps within 1-1.5years and it's not that the others couldnt do that it's just that they lack the knowledge and work ethic. You can put in thousands of hours but if you dont focus on improving and optimization you will get nowhere.
If your metric for success is becoming rich and/or famous(and assuming you aren't just born into it), then you need 90% persistence, 8% training/experience, and 2% talent/intelligence.
If your metric for success is creating something that adds to the world, then you need 75% persistence, 15% talent/intelligence, and 10% training/experience.
If your metric for success is dying alone and miserable only to have people posthumously proclaim how great you were and that you must've secretly been a time traveler or something, then you need 50% persistence, 45% talent/intelligence, and 5% training/experience.
It is true though, you can be persistent at something and you'll obviously get better, but you can never hope to beat actual talent through sheer force of will.
I'm not even talking about some dude being a better runner than you or being better at fighting games or whatever. Someone with real talent need to train to build their potential, but someone without talent can never hope to match it no matter how much they practice. Beethoven is probably the best example, he just had the music in him since the start, not even any practice required.
> Beethoven is probably the best example, he just had the music in him since the start, not even any practice required.
Please tell me what "practice" for musical composition is and why do you think Beethoven didn't had any.
Do you realize that the only thing we know from Beethoven are the works he himself wanted to submit? We have no clue about how many works he trashed and never published, some of his sonatas only lasted because close friends of his took the sheets and published them postmortem.
Historic composers trashing their first works out of unsatisfaction is a normal occurrence in the western canon, and the most trascendental works of Beethoven himself came later on his life (when he was getting deaf actually), his early sonatas and works were quite traditionalist in form.
You will never be able to match up with someone who is truly talented, talking about some guy being a little better than you shouldn't really be called talent which implies natural skills, it's more of a general proficency.
And in particular when it comes to weighlifting the 'talent' is most of all a result of genetic physical traits. What are the shapes of the muscles and muscle attachements, what sort of cell types are dominant, shape and size of bones and so on will have a large effect on torque and the amount of force you are able to generate or need to generate to lift a certain amount of weight.
>>377607976
Not true, but hey, go ahead and become among the top 5% mathematicians, painters or musicians, obviously they just practiced really hard. No innate ability or anything like that. Top 20% would be a better guesstimate.
No, what happens if you practice piano with the wrong hand position is that you're getting better at playing piano in a way that is objectively inferior to another one.
Not...really? Especially for the first two, persistence is WAY more important.
The important thing to realize is that success rarely has to do with actually producing anything good. You could be a fucking genius who comes up with a plan to solve world hunger but because of the nature of human social structures it's impossible to implement such a plan unless you're persistent enough to coax, wheedle, and luck your way toward hopefully kinda sorta getting enough people around to your cause so that you might get a shot. And said shot STILL has a decent chance of failing.
it's not hard though, there are so many people on this earth and most of them live in poverty or are too young to even compete with you. just living in a 1st world country and being able to get proper education/training puts you above them.
and painting or making music is just another skill you can learn. even if you arent talented at all if you go to schools/universities that teach you this stuff and you work hard you can easily be better than 95% of the current population because a vast majority of them dont even give a shit about painting or music. or do you think starving children in afrika worry about being the best painters ? they might have the talent to be the best but they will never be because talent is bullshit, if you dont have the right environment you are fucked.
if talent meets opportunity and interest then you have someone truly special but unless all those factors come together talent doesnt really matter. there is probably someone out there who could win an olympic gold medal but will never try that sport in his lifetime.
>Because he literally wrote music when he was a toddler
Absolutely anyone can think up of music in his head, even children, and writing it is a matter of knowing notation, that's nothing impressive, especially for the 19th century where music education was more popular.
If you told me he composed full-length sonatas that were on-par with his late works or symphonies then that's something, but since they weren't published they were probably garbage, akin to a child making shitty drawings on a piece of paper, only that composing music for some reason seems something more sophisticated when is in fact something more primal than drawing.
reading your post it sounds like you're trying to downplay the importance of talent but you just go off on tangents about shit that are completely irrelevant. like the whole middle paragraph, what the fuck does that have to do with anything? someone having a talent they don't know about doesn't mean talent doesn't exist or matter. and no shit you're going to better than the general population at something if the majority of people don't bother to learn that thing. doesn't mean i'm gonna be as good of a swimmer as michael phelps or musician like beethoven if i spend the next 20 years practicing. the only valid point you raise is how your upbringing can affect your skills as well, but upbringing is also something that's essentially luck just like genetics and talent.
I know a guy who's fairly good at any game he touches. He picks up a new fightan, for example, and soon he's an above average player making the experienced ones focus. It's like he gets the hang of it fast.
BUT, he always played games. Since he was a child, he had a controller on his hands, and perhaps that plays as a factor. Convergent knowledge of mechanics works unconsciously and that happens. I believe talent usually works this way, often times the hardwork interpreted as fun.
I don't train anything beyond what I like to have as skill. When I make an effort, I can beat him on Smash Bros consistently and another "talented" guy in Mario Kart 8, but I don't see the effort as worth it.
If I became too good, fun would be lost. But if I stayed as a shitter too inferior to them, I'd have no fun either. So I try to have a percentage of wins against them that makes it play umpredictable.
TL:DR; No training for the sake of training and becoming the best I can be (perhaps on single games). I train to the point it's fun to play with my skilled gaming partners.
It goes both ways: You'll become better at things you like, but you also tend to like things you are good at.
I guess it means you usually shouldn't envy talent. If you really want to spend your life becoming good at something, chances are you're already talented, because someone with no talent would never get the idea that this is a good way to spend your time. But you might envy someone who is talented in more useful things. It kinda sucks if your talent is video games or shitposting.
I dont know it's really hard to estimate because there are no leaderboards for things like painting or music or whatever.
maybe I am just genetically gifted but no matter which sports I did but statistically speaking I easily got 20% in no time. that is based on studies that show how fast X percent of humans can run or how far the average human can throw or shit like that. so maybe my view is just warped because I am gifted when it comes to sports ?
In other things like videogames I also easily reach top 20% simply by playing for a few weeks. Sure gaming is not a valid statistic but then again how many things are actually measured where you can really tell if you reached top 20% or not ?
Maybe I just participate in stuff I am genetically gifted in and it is kind of a self-fullfilling prophecy because only stuff I have talent in is fun for me so who knows. I am still convinced it's not because of my genetics but because of hard work that I am good at certain stuff.
You're assuming that all other factors are equal. In other words, you're lumping talent, persistence, knowledge, etc. all into one homogenous pool, arbitrarily defining a cutoff(presumably somewhere above yourself), and then just calling everyone below that cutoff categorically worthless.
In other other words, you're being a massive pussycunt.
Assuming you're not truly the worthless piece of shit you claim to be, what you need to understand is that people have different individual strengths and weaknesses that cannot be condensed into a single number. It's actually true more often than not that people with high intelligence and/or talent, as you call it, lack discipline and persistence. They might be able to do cool shit, but it all amounts to parlour tricks if they can't make a living out of it. And you're just going to have to take my word for it but if you were one of those "talented" people, chances are right now you'd be miserably wasting away in some trashy barely livable apartment right now, trying to get "noticed," or otherwise employed as a grunt in some faceless company that has zero respect for your talent. And you'd probably think to yourself, "oh, if only I could be one of those soulless moneygrubbers so I wouldn't have to worry about principles or beauty and just fuck bitches in my gold plated bathtub all day!"
Chances are you're a worthless failure. But it's not because you lack talent. It's because you lack the ambition to succeed and the drive to do whatever it takes. But if it's any consolation a lot of THOSE people have problems too. I guess what I'm trying to say is life is suffering and you should just kys already, faggot.
Highest MMR is ~9000. Top 20% would be, I dunno, let's say 6000+ upwards. It's probably higher but if you even get above 5k in a couple of months I'd take my hat off for you.
I don't mind that he's mixed, I just never got the impression given the setting, hell some random rich dude in the south gave him the keys to his cadillac and trusted blacksad to drive it to him
That doesn't sound like something that would happen in the American south in the 1950s
No I don't have an issue with him being black, or mixed as is most likely, but him having a beard? That I have an issue with.
Why are you so sensitive on the matter?
yeah I know I meant in certain games not in all of them in shooters I would say it would take me only weeks in MOBAs definitely longer.
and there is no way 20% of players are 6000+ infact if you look at MMR distribution it would be around 3700MMR to be better than 80% of players which I think could be done in 6months ?
What you are saying isn't necessarily wrong but I think you misunderstood.
I wasn't referring to the talents and weak points of a person overall, I was talking about a single "competitive field".
Of course if you have no motivation you won't go anywhere with your talent, but I was taking into consideration one motivated individual with "average" talent and one motivated individual with "above-average" talent.
>I agree in that Blacksad never strikes me as actually being black prior to or after that one scene in this comic where the Arctic Claws ree at him.
That's because it didn't matter to the plot before. He was just a black guy and that was it, it wasn't like they were trying to cater to a specific audience. The artists just decided that that's what they wanted for their character. That's how you do good characters. Who they are feels natural instead of forced.
>>377611438
No, what you're talking about are two people with no motivation, one of which has talent. If you just coast through life doing what's expected of you, i.e. going to college, submitting plain resumes to various places of work, etc. then yeah, someone who's even marginally more "talented" than you is going to win out. Marginally more anything, really -- attractive, motivated, intelligent, the list goes on. And if your only aspiration in life is to just coast by and do what everyone else does, then I guess that's too bad. But in that case you also have to understand that the modern streamlined way of life where everything is all neatly organized like that is, in itself, a form of handicap. You're given this opportunity to have a decent life, so long as you don't majorly fuck up, and it comes with a cost: every so often, you might just get screwed through no especial fault of your own.
It doesn't though
Blacksad never deals with segregation, or racism until this comic, two things which were rampant in the US at this time.
It's one thing to hamfist racism into a modern setting where it feels out of place, it's another to deal with it in a comic set in a time where it was a serious issue.
